Aliexpress has been dominating the online market since it first began in 2010 as a B2C platform for Chinese companies to sell to foreigners. It has recently expanded to other foreign companies with warehouses located in both US and Europe.

In an article published by Salehoo aimed to compare the two marketplace giants, Aliexpress and Amazon, findings show that Aliexpress has dramatically experienced growth from $171 to $547 billion during a 4-year time span (between 2012–2016).

Meanwhile, ChinaInternetWatch confirms that there is an estimate of over 20 million active users browsing through Aliexpress daily.

With data aside, there are different factors that play a role in the success and expansion of the platform, such as price affordability, international shipping, and bulk discounts. Among them is the intelligent implementation of the right incoterm used to pull customers in.

Incoterms are :

Incoterms are 11 trade terms established by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to communicate different aspects of cross-border trade. Incoterms’ primary function is to set the responsibilities of a seller and a buyer in a shipping agreement. — An excerpt from Alibaba Seller Page.

The Incoterm that is responsible for the success of Aliexpress is Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) which implies that the seller is fully responsible for the risks, costs regarding the transportation of products right until the point where the buyer is registered to have received the goods.

DDP cuts out confusion and misunderstanding.

It can be applied for any mode of transportation.

  • In the situation where goods are not received by the buyer for any reason, including products that have been returned due to not being picked up by the buyer, or lost during shipment, a refund will be given to the buyer.
  • Seller benefits in only deciding which shipping service to use that helps them to save money to send the item and total control over cost.
  • Perfect for busy buyers and one-off individual purchases as experienced buyers working with bulk shipments are unlikely to pursue using DDP.
  • This is a great advantage to the buyer since it encourages them to trust in the seller that they will offer a prompt delivery or refund in return for an undeliverable item.
  • However, from the seller’s perspective, it imposes a great responsibility to ensure they are actively tracking and monitoring the package in order to avoid an error in the delivery and logistics process.
  • It poses risks to the seller. From the seller’s perspective, it is an unbalanced transaction and bears all the risks and costs on the seller.

The problem lies in the fact that from time to time there will be uncontrolled and unexpected errors and circumstances that the seller has no control over, which they still need to be liable to cover the costs and expenses.

As a seller, would you be willing to implement DDP in your business.

Feel free to share your thoughts with us.
