The content discusses the prioritization of three basic rights from the Finnish Constitution that one would save if given the power to implement only a few in a hypothetical scenario of a country under dictatorial rule.
Abstract
The article presents a thought experiment, asking readers to consider which basic rights they would preserve if they had the authority to choose only three in a country taken over by a dictator. It references the Finnish Constitution, emphasizing the importance of fundamental rights as universal and equal for all individuals. The author, drawing from personal experience and the Finnish legal framework, selects the right to social security (Section 19), equality (Section 6), and the right to life, personal liberty, and integrity (Section 7) as the most crucial rights to maintain. These rights are deemed essential for protecting the most vulnerable, ensuring a functioning society, and preserving human dignity and life. Opinions
The author believes that the right to social security is critical to financially, mentally, and physically support those unable to work, including students, children, seniors, and the disabled.
Equality is seen as a fundamental aspect of basic rights, necessary to prevent biases from influencing societal decisions and to protect lives.
The right to life, personal liberty, and integrity is considered essential, especially from the perspective of someone who has lived under an oppressive regime, to ensure a fair and torture-free society.
The author's personal background as an Iraqi who lived under Saddam’s regime influences their perspective on the importance of these rights.

God forbid, if your country was overthrown by a dictator and you were in a position of power and were given the option to implement only three basic rights, what would these rights be?
According to the Ministry of Justice (Finland):
Fundamental (basic) and human rights are universal rights enjoyed equally by all individuals. The Constitution of Finland guarantees fundamental rights for all. — An excerpt from Oikeusministerio.fi
For this example, I will base my answer based on the Finnish Consitution which can be accessed in English through the link below:
3 Basic Rights in Finnish Constitution
When it comes to basic rights, there is a need to prioritize survival and preserving human dignity.
For this reason, I have chosen the 3 rights below:
Section 19- The right to social security: preserves the right to ensure access to social security and medical care and support for those unable to work, students, children, seniors, and the disabled. If this right is taken away, it will be disastrous for those who are most vulnerable as they will suffer both financially, mentally, and physically.
Section 6- Equality: This is a ‘must’ when it comes to basic rights to preserve as equality is highly important in a functional society. Without equality, our life is in danger and biases start taking control of decisions.
Section 7- The right to life, personal liberty, and integrity: As an Iraqi who lived under Saddam’s regime in Iraq, this is a fundamental basic right that must be preserved to save people’s lives and dignity and ensures a torture-free system that is run fairly when it comes to dealing with others.
Which basic rights would you preserve?
