Dear Subscribers,

In this post, I introduce Mark Sanford, Ph.D.. Dr. Sanford is relatively new on Medium. Therefore, I’d like to create visibility for his valuable content, hoping my readers might benefit from his insights.

Dr. Sanford started writing for Medium in December 2021 and recently joined my publications as a contributor. He has written 65 essays on topics such as self-respect, goal striving, success, and overcoming inner obstacles.

I’d like to briefly mention his studies and achievements so that his content can make sense to readers.

After graduating cum laude from Stanford University in 1963, Dr. Sanford moved on to graduate studies in sociology at UC Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. in 1969.

His first teaching job was at the University of Santa Clara and later at Stockton State University in Pomona, NJ. He ended his academic teaching career at the Wright Institute, Berkeley, Ca.in 1979.

While at the Wright Institute, Dr. Sanford secured a grant from the San Francisco Foundation to study smoking behavior in public places. Results from that study contributed to the subsequent non-smoking legislation across the United States.

After leaving the Wright Institute, Dr. Sanford earned an Addiction Studies Certificate from the School of Professional Psychology at JFK university. After that, he worked as an addiction counselor at Mt. Diablo Medical Center in Concord, Ca.

Dr. Sanford next turned to work in sales and started an online business servicing the training needs of corporate and direct sales organizations.

He obtained a Mastery of Personal and Executive Coaching certificate from the College of Executive Coaching in Ventura, Ca.

He has recently taken up a writing career focusing on issues of personal development, personal change, habit formation, and self-coaching.

Dr. Sanford has written three books, namely “Making it In graduate School,” “Fearless Cold Calling,” and “Fearless Weight Loss.”

Dr. Sanford likes to share his intimate knowledge of the institutional and private sphere with the Medium.com community.

Drawing on these experiences, now lodged in an archive of over nine thousand files, Dr. Sanford likes to write about diverse topics related to personal change and development.

Early life experiences gave rise to low-level emotional abuse that produced a strong interest in redemptive coping methods. This background led to many compensatory achievements for him, which he now leverages into experience-based essays.

These achievements included smoking cessation, weight loss, sobriety, skill building, and voluntary work.

As a long-term journal keeper, Dr. Sanford believes in introspection and self-knowledge as a foundation for new initiatives in self-empowerment and self-change.

He sees self-development as not only a matter of dropping bad habits or dysfunctional behavior patterns but also of adding life-enhancing new interests.

Dr. Sanford aims to help others to improve their lives by sharing what life experiences have taught him about behavior change and expanding self-respect. The theme of self-respect, achievement, and maintenance is central to his thinking.

He believes that self-respect is the first step to achieving confidence and success. To stand for yourself and your dignity is self-respect. A life plan that puts self-respect at the center of personal philosophy, he believes, will pay many dividends.

He mentioned that his beliefs align with Harry Murray's “The final goal of personality is to create a philosophy of life and become the incarnation of it.”

In addition to insightful content, I also enjoy the simplicity of Dr. Sanford’s written communication. He simplifies complex topics by articulating and giving examples from his personal life.

I want to provide a sampling of his work via the following links. I believe you will find them valuable.
