What’s something you held on to for a long time but realized at some point that you need to let go?
Sunny Side Updates with The Brain is a Noodle || Week 28

As we’re rushing towards the end of April, I’m realizing that perhaps I already misspoke and only I am rushing towards the end of the month and to everyone else, it’s just an ordinary month. Is it silly that for the 22nd year in my life, time is governed by my academic semesters?
I realize that life doesn’t work that way outside of school walls. But having spent 82% of my life in school I also can’t fathom that years are neatly chopped into segments with a known ending (i.e., finals).
But I suppose businesses have “quarters”?
Either way, this weird concept of time is something I will eventually have to let go of. So is the notion that 10:10 am is recess (see footnote).
🔊 Also, before I launch into the official shortform prompt of the week, I wanted to take the time to encourage all to check out the “Amplify voices” section of this update this week.
Shortform Theme of the Week
This week’s shortform theme is: what is something (tangible or not) that you held on to for a long time but realized at some point that you need to let go? It could be a habit, an object, a person in your life, a memory…
Submit your shortform piece (<150 words) now to share your thoughts!
This is just a guideline for inspiration! You may submit shortforms related to other concepts if other ideas come to you! :)
🌠 Ongoing Adventure Fiction Series!
I’ve finally launched a project that my child self has always wanted to do: create a collaborative never-ending story with branch-offs into multiple different storylines!
I’m so excited to see what direction this story will take so please don’t be shy about submitting!
Here is chapter 1!
For the most recent chapters, search “#OngoingAdventure” below! (PC users, CTRL+F is your friend. Mac users, 🤷♀️, I’m going to guess it’s CMD+F?)
✍ April Essay/Creative Non-Fiction Prompt
We will now accept essay submissions that are fewer than 2500 words that fit with the monthly prompt!
As an avid podcast listener (and someone in the midst of launching one — what, wait, no, shh, you didn’t read that, it’s a secret!), I’m really interested in your creative non-fiction pieces on the topic of: podcasts!
Some questions to mull over:
- What kinds of podcasts are your favourite?
- Is there some commonality among all the podcasts you listen to?
- How has listening to podcasts changed your life?
This prompt is active from now (yes, now! ) until April 30th, 2021, 3pm EST.

🔊 Voices to Amplify
Amidst Derek Chauvin’s trial for George Floyd’s death emerged the stories of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo, who were shot and killed by police. I’m noticing that the discussion and importantly the agitation for change in mainstream media (and social media) is fizzling out, yet nothing substantial has truly changed and these shootings continued to happen.
BLM is not a trend. Black and brown lives continue to matter; anti-racism work is lifelong. Please take the time to continue reading, sharing and agitating for change.

Sure, Ikigai seems like a great concept, but I don’t want to read about it from someone “adopting” it for a trend to sell self-improvement. I want to hear about it from people who’ve lived with this concept as an inherent part of their culture. [ apr 14 ]

Telling clients that their encounters with racism are personal perceptions that should be “reframed” imposes this belief that dealing with racism is the norm and there is no other way of living. It imposes the belief that the individual is at fault.
The idea of automating grunt work is to tune into which things you do in the exact same way every day that could be minimized using a quick trick.

Give these a little love, will ya?
Saying goodbye to this rectangular February and saying hello to March! Somehow, it smells like spring already, despite frost and snow still covering most of my backyard. Just last week, I had to dig my way out of my basement apartment. Could spring truly be around the corner?
Significant for scientists may mean p < 0.05, the probability that this difference we’ve found between two concepts was entirely random is less than 5%, meaning that it’s most likely not a random thing.
