Abstract

The poem "There’s a Hole In My Heart I Must Mend" by Matt Ray is a poignant piece that explores the emotional journey of recovering from a lost love. The author likens the heart's healing process to repairing a boat, suggesting various materials such as a boater's bung, epoxy, rubber cement, and even medical gauze as metaphors for attempts to fix a heartache. The poem conveys a sense of trying to patch the emotional leak with practical solutions, yet acknowledges the inefficacy of these methods in truly easing the pain of loss. Ray reflects on the hardening of the heart as a protective measure to prevent future hurt, while also acknowledging the remaining vulnerable spots that love can touch. The poem concludes with an admission that the heart was leaking love for a friend, indicating a transition from romantic love to a more platonic relationship. The author, who enjoys sailing and nature, invites readers to connect with him through his Linktree and

There’s a Hole In My Heart I Must Mend

A Poem About Lost Love

There’s a hole in my heart I must mend A boater’s bung might do — to stop the leak that sprung there Perhaps some epoxy or rubber cement — for lover’s lament Bit’s of twine or superglue might fix the thru-hull Some coagulant assists in slowing down the seepage Gauze and tape from the medical kit for sanitization But probably do nothing to ease this pain

There’s a hole in my heart I must mend Rivets and sheet metal, used to shore it up Against future weakness Once hearts have been softened Hardening prevents recurring damage Much of my heart is repaired this way Hardened with silicon carbide, dyneema, and spider’s silk Just a few more vulnerable spots left

There’s a hole in my heart I must mend It was leaking out love for you, my friend For now, we are just that — friends
