Summary

The protagonist is dealing with a surreal situation involving a glowing waste paper basket and is deciding whether to congratulate their best friend on a new job, ask for help, or explain the strange occurrence while seeking safety.

Abstract

The narrative unfolds with the protagonist confronted by an otherworldly glowing trash can, causing significant distress. They are compelled to stay indoors due to the hazardous nature of the glowing object and are unable to call emergency services after previous overuse of the service. Instead, they reach out to their best friend, Persephone, who is excited about her new job at a funeral home. The protagonist is torn between celebrating Persephone's success and addressing the immediate threat posed by the expanding, echoing trash can. The story presents a humorous yet tense scenario where the protagonist must choose between acknowledging their friend's joy, seeking immediate assistance, or calmly explaining the situation while taking cover.

Opinions

  • The protagonist is skeptical about their current reality, insisting that the bizarre events are not a dream.
  • There is a sense of frustration with emergency services, as indicated by the protagonist's previous calls being dismissed as excessive.
  • Persephone's enthusiasm about her new job at the funeral home suggests a positive outlook on life, even in somber settings.
  • The protagonist's internal conflict is evident as they balance the need to address the immediate danger with the social etiquette of congratulating a friend.
  • The story implies a comedic undertone, with the protagonist's situation juxtaposed against Persephone's job-related humor and the absurdity of the glowing trash can.

Spying the radiation-like glow blasting from the waste paper basket, an unease settles into every bone in your body. You are NOT dreaming despite what Reveille claims.

You can’t leave the house — that would involve hiking past the trash.

You can’t call 911. The last time you telephoned they threatened police action when they claimed your 48 calls in the last 3 days was a tad bit excessive. They didn’t even send someone to check in about the neighbor’s cat, wearing pyjamas and a fake beard, thrusting a dead snake through your mail slot.

You are going to call back Reveille and insist this is real.

Yanking your cellphone back out of its nest in your shirt pocket you shriek at Siri to call your best friend.

“Michaelson’s Morgue,” sings a voice you have known since kindergarten. “You stab ‘em we slab ‘em!”

For a moment you think you’ve dialed the wrong number. Did Siri call the wrong person again? Then you remember that you forgot to change “best friend” in the phone your sister handed down to you when yours fell in the toilet.

“Persephone?” Your twin sister’s best friend.

“Yeah, yeah, it’s me. I’m practicing for my new job. Yay me! I got hired at the Funeral home!”

Even through the phone, you feel her joy rocking from pedicured, hairless toes up to her gorgeous chiffon-y tresses. She radiates energy on a normal basis and this is insane. She has more energy than Richard Simmons.

You want to congratulate her. But the glowing trash can is inching its way towards you… you swear it’s doubling in size with every cling clang-y rock. An echo reverberates through your apartment, sounding worse than the 400-year-old radiator's mid-winter groaning sound.

What are you going to do?
