TandaPay is Whistleblowing Software

For community reporting of police brutality and abuse

Inspired by Flowers to the People

I cannot say what TandaPay is any better than this

This is from the NY Times podcast The Daily, headline: “Guilty of All Charges.” The discussion highlights how smartphones used to record incidents of police brutality are an essential tool for holding the police accountable (transcript here start at 19:00).

Community member: For those of us who have been boots on the ground day-in-and-day-out here on thirty-eighth in Chicago, we’ve been here almost three hundred and sixty-five days in order to get this type of justice.

John Eligon: And this had been the culmination of a long activist struggle to hold specifically Derek Chauvin, but more broadly, the system accountable. And so I can really sense not only a sense of happiness in her voice, but a sense of resolve, this is the beginning of something better.

Community member: I mean, you’ve got people that have actually stepped up from the precinct that are like, no, this isn’t proper, this isn’t right. And they need to be held accountable. We have community members, Black, White, Asian, brown, yellow, green, whatever, holding people accountable in ways that you’ve never seen them do before.

John Eligon: This is about accountability. This is about everybody stepping up,

Community member: Recording. That is the biggest weapon we have right now is our phones. We pull them out, speak on it, speak up for that person that’s lying on the ground. Speak up for the person that’s being punched in the top of her head. Speak up for the person that’s being slammed across the front of the vehicles. That’s your job as a bystander, as a community member.

John Eligon: She talked about everyone having their cell phones out and more people stepping up and making sure that they use those tools that they have to ensure that police cannot get away with these types of things again.

Community member: We’re not asking anymore. We’re demanding what we deserve. What we are owed, we’re going to keep moving. That’s all I can say, is we are going to keep marching. Ten toes down, and we’re going to continue to say everything with our whole chest, we have, to have to.

Motivations

My motivations for working on this project are described here:

Social Justice Applications

TandaPay’s primary application is to help communities advance their agenda for social justice. The TandaPay architecture enables communities to approve their own claims. These claims are legal records that serve to document sexual harassment and police brutality.

  1. Why TandaPay is an obvious solution to the problem of Sexual Harassment
  2. The Kerner Commission’s Prescription for Effective Grievance-Response
  3. How P2P insurance can empower social justice in local communities
  4. Information Escrows Get a Power-up
  5. The Politics of Sexual Harassment Data
  6. TandaPay is a weak insurance protocol — It is a powerful coordination protocol for galvanizing movements
  7. Join the Financial Escrow Revolution
  8. TandaPay and Workers’ Compensation insurance

Key Technical Findings and Practical Applications

The core of my findings is written down in these posts. The first post explains why P2P insurance is a natural evolution of existing technologies. The second and third posts convey the foundational role blockchain technology plays in enabling P2P insurance. These posts focus on how TandaPay leverages technology to allow communities to approve their own insurance claims:

Legal Analysis of P2P Payments and Contracts

These articles serve to discuss some of the legal challenges associated with creating a protocol that has the property of out-of-the-box regulatory compliance:

  1. TandaPay Cannot Be Regulated 1 — Direct payments are a protected first amendment right
  2. The Law and Smart Contracts — Smart contracts create coordination not obligation
  3. Andrew Mabon: TandaPay Cannot Be Regulated 2 — Court precedent as it applies to TandaPay

  6. Kurt Mattson: The Law and Smart Contracts
  7. Kurt Mattson: Legal Protections to Thwart Fraud in TandaPay

The Importance of MakerDAO’s DAI

I have started a series on stablecoins since TandaPay is required to use a stablecoin to function. We look forward to integrating with MakerDAO to allow policyholders to pay their premium payments in DAI and receive their claim awards in DAI. This will provide a better user experience since users will not be exposed to the volatility associated with using ETH.
