Here’s Why Anxiety Increases As We Age and What We Can Do About It.

We experience anxiety at all ages as part of our survival system. As a person who experienced anxiety in my life, I wrote several articles covering various aspects of anxiety to create awareness of our mental health.
In this article, I briefly touch on key points related to age-related anxiety, which is a common and well-known situation globally. The psychology and physiology of aging are more complex and challenging compared to our younger years.
Anxiety can affect both our physical and mental health. Physical and cognitive decline seems to be the common factors for age-related anxiety. Some of us might experience more anxiety as we age. However, an anxious brain is treatable. Neuroplasticity is a critical capability that we need to consider in handling anxiety in adult patients.
Anxiety has a broad spectrum starting from a slight stress implication to extreme distressful situations such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder affecting the proper functioning of our faculties.
Identifying symptoms as early as possible is critical to addressing the root causes and developing effective treatment methods. Early identification can also contribute to preventing them from occurring in the long run. Reversing the symptoms can be a practical approach.
Some key symptoms are excessive worry, creating absolute obligations unnecessarily, overblown safety concerns, avoiding social engagements, and phobias. In addition to psychological symptoms, there are also physical symptoms of anxiety, such as sleep deprivation, irregular heartbeats, shaking, agitation, muscle aches, and nausea.
Some people try alcohol or drugs, which makes the situation worse at later stages. But there are better ways to treat the symptoms, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. For example, using breath is one of the effective methods. Breathing is always a straightforward approach and is available to us.
In addition, moderate exercise, high-quality sleep, proper nutrition, laughter, singing, dancing, and meaningful engagement with others are practical lifestyle approaches to dealing with anxiety.
There may be several causes of anxiety. However, as we age, we may have additional health conditions. For example, rumination, metabolic syndrome, heart conditions, hormonal imbalances, and cancer can significantly increase the manifestation of anxiety.
Since many patients use medications to treat these conditions, the side effects of drugs can cause anxiety. As we age, our physical movements decrease. As a result, lack of exercise can be one of the root causes of anxiety. Untreated traumas from younger years are known causes of anxiety.
Treating anxiety for the aging population is critical because untreated anxiety can cause additional health conditions such as cognitive disorders. Depression, anhedonia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s diseases are a few examples of cognitive decline in older adults.
Untreated anxiety not only affects the lifespan and quality of life for older adults but also impacts the well-being of caregivers, the healthcare system, and the economy. Treating anxiety is also essential to increase our lifespan.
We know that anxiety is treatable at any age. Lifestyle adjustments with a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication are commonly used treatment approaches. Some safe supplementation of nutritional deficiencies such as magnesium and Vitamin D with the supervision of healthcare professionals is also a viable option.
The best approach is to identify anxiety as early as possible, understand symptoms, take a proactive treatment approach, reverse symptoms, and prevent it from manifesting proactively. It is never too late to treat anxiety. Awareness is the key.
