What Belief Have You Debunked or Changed At Some Point In Your Life?

The biggest belief swerve of my scientific life is the development of the “Power Pose” research. If you haven’t encountered it yet, the power pose became viral with a Ted Talk about how your body language can shape how you are. It’s part of a body of research of embodied cognition where your environment and how you’re positioned impact how you think.
It changed my life, and to this day, the mechanism feels uncertain, and I feel like I have so much reading to catch up on. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that all throughout undergrad, before big interviews and presentations, I would strike a power pose in the bathroom, and it helped with tackling the anxiety. Maybe it’s like one of those superstitions that athletes have for their sports games.
This power pose research was impacted by the psychology field’s replication crisis, swinging the verdict on this research towards null. Yet, newer research reaffirms the effect in a softer narrative. It’s an ongoing journey of rapidly updating information.
Maybe it’s embarrassing to admit that I still find myself standing in bathroom stalls striking this pose. Placebo is a damn strong effect, and it seems like the newest research on this shows something stronger than a placebo. But I’ll keep an eye out.
This makes me curious — what did you believe at an earlier time in your life that was debunked or changed to something new? What convinced you of the initial belief, and what changed your perspective?
In a time where we’re becoming more polarized and extreme in our views, I’m curious about what moves people in the opposite direction — to see and hold nuances no matter how uncomfortable they can be.
