Sparks №20: Pushing the Boulder of Negativity Out of the Way

A weekly newsletter from Flint & Steel

Photo by Ben Karpinski on Unsplash

I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a rocky start to the new year, not because of any one thing happening. I’ve been in a battle with myself, finding my motivation after two weeks off from grad school.

My husband, my kids and I had nearly two weeks off together with no commitments. We all took the time to rest and recharge with board games, video games, and baking (well I did the baking, they did the eating).

I was ready to get back to reality on January 3rd along with my family, but have struggled each day this week to get anything done, until late last night.

What happened?

I pushed the boulder out of the way and completed some work. A switch went off in my head, “Okay, I’m ready to tackle all this again!”

Then the negative thoughts crept in, “Why did you waste all this time this week?” That’s when I shut and locked the door.

My question for you is…have you struggled this week? There is a lot of pressure to get right back into life with new goals, resolutions, challenges. Has this week not gone the way she had envisioned? Do you feel like giving up on a resolution already? Write about it. If you care to share your response, submit it to F&S, I would be happy to publish it. You never know who you may inspire in the process.

Last night as I was struggling with deadlines, I started to freewrite what I was feeling. It helped to trick my brain into thinking, “hey she’s doing it, she’s writing!” I didn’t write anything grand or amazing. I just wrote what I was feeling.

But don’t give up on yourself because the first week of the year isn’t going as planned. Don’t look back, keep moving forward.

Freewriting Friday

I will be posting a new Freewriting Friday article next Friday, January 14, 2022.

Around Medium: Calls for Submissions, Writing Prompts, and Challenges

Check out last week’s newsletter for more writing prompts and challenges.

Tips

As always, review each publication’s guidelines for their prompts. Many prompts do not have a set deadline.

Make sure when you are responding to a prompt, you credit where your inspiration came from, like a link to the prompt article.

Many of these prompts could fall under nonfiction, poetry, and fiction so don’t limit yourself. There is no right or wrong. Use these prompts as a springboard to your writing.
