January Prompt: Throwback to Student Days
Share your training memories — the good, the bad and the scary!

Happy New Year!
We sure need a big dose of happiness with Omicron dominating our existence. Yup, it’s a rough start to 2022 with the Pandemic still ruling our lives. Our case numbers in Montréal were over 14K Thursday, so we have just been dealt a curfew and a family-only visiting bubble for the next three weeks.
Great. Did we learn anything from a year ago?
I live in the hope that one day, soon, our world will return to a new but manageable normal. We must focus on staying safe and keeping our sanity during these challenging times in the interim.
What better distraction than a writing prompt?
I started this publication in September 2021 and already have proven I suck as an owner and editor. I want to change that.
Personally, I know that writing prompts can wake me out of hibernation. It takes just a little spark to ignite a fire.
Last month, Pene Hodge and Karen Schwartz shared their stories in response to the Christmas in Hospital prompt. Thank you! I know many readers and writers are not health care professionals, but sometimes your stories are a good fit for Nursing Notes and Karen’s story is a perfect example of this.
Each month in 2022, I will be posting a new writing prompt to not only inspire your writing creativity but as an opportunity to reflect on your job in the healthcare industry. Whether those memories make you laugh or cringe, we want to hear them!
Let’s start at the beginning of your journey…
JANUARY PROMPT: student days.
We’ve all been there. Newbies. Green as the grass; white as snow. Everyone in any job has to learn the ropes before they gain confidence or start climbing the ladder.
Perhaps you had no idea what you were in for when you signed up for nursing, patient attendant or ambulance tech training but did so to please your Mom or Gran? Maybe you thought you knew what you were signing up for but discovered the truth after the fact? Or you always wanted to work in healthcare, and here you are!
Whatever brought you to work in one of the most demanding and thankless jobs, Nursing Notes wants to hear your story. Share the scoop on your student days.
Here are some ideas to get you inspired:
- Why did you come into this profession?
- What other jobs or skills did you have that helped you in healthcare training?
- What type of training did you have (college or hospital-based), and what were the best — and worst — aspects of it?
- What were the challenges you had to overcome to succeed as a student?
- Are there any particular moments that you’ll never forget?
- What are some of the things you learnt in school that don’t happen
- What are some things you wish you learned in school but didn’t?
Guidelines
All stories should follow the usual rules of Medium and the general submission guidelines of Nursing Notes:
Please use ‘writing prompts’ as one of your tags for your stories. I will remove one of yours to include it if you don’t as it helps categorize the stories.
If you are not already a writer for Nursing Notes, please either email me or leave a comment requesting me to add you as one.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected]
I am looking forward to hearing about the highs and lows of your training days!
