Summary

The Poetry Playground Writing Prompt #16 invites poets to explore the theme of "one day" and its impact on their lives, while also welcoming new writers and introducing a "Poet of the Week" feature.

Abstract

The "Poetry Playground" is a creative space that provides a weekly writing prompt for poets to engage with. The current prompt, #16, encourages writers to reflect on the significance of a single day in their lives, inspired by the song lyric "what a difference a day makes." This could be a day of joy, such as a wedding or the birth of a child, or a day of sorrow, like the loss of a loved one. The platform also celebrates the addition of seven new writers to its community and announces the launch of a new feature, "Poet of the Week," which will spotlight individual poets through self-written articles. The initiative aims to foster a supportive environment where writers can share their work and connect with one another.

Poetry Playground Writing Prompt #16

One Day More

NOTE: Update to submission guidelines — please include ‘Poetry Playground’ as one of your tags.

It is time for another Poetry Playground Prompt! After last week’s prompt which saw a sea of amazing responses, this week we are again focusing on a theme. I am writing this as my holiday (vacation for my American friends) draws towards a close. I will be missing the sea breeze and the holiday diet.

For our penultimate evening, we are watching the final episodes of ‘One Day’ on Netflix. It is a show which focuses on one date across multiple years — the 15th of July in the early eighties and each year into the late nineties (and maybe beyond — I haven’t finished it yet). One day of the year, across multiple years.

That inspired this week’s prompt: one day. Rather than thinking about the same date multiple times, think of the song lyric ‘what a difference a day makes’. How has one day made a difference in your life? It might be as exciting as the birth of a child, or a wedding day. It could be the day you met someone important in your life. It could take a sadder tone suchas the day you lost a loved one.

One day can change and shape the direction of our lives. Try to express that in a poem.

Remember, general poetry submissions are always welcome at Poetry Playground.

Welcome to New Writers

This week we have welcomed seven new writers: Andy Porter, Alex Hanna, Brenda Long, Matthew Gould, Taryn Tyler, João Nascimento, Imsaso. We are delighted you’ve joined us. Welcome to all of you!

Let’s open the Poetry Playground!

New Feature: Poet of the Week

I would like to introduce a new feature called ‘Poet of the Week’. This would be one of our regular writers who would write an article about themselves based on some questions. It would be linked in the Weekly Writing Prompt.

If you’d like to feature as Poet of the Week, or have suggestions for questions we could ask the Poet of the Week, please let me know in the responses.

We will begin Poet of the Week next week. Jennifer Morrison has already volunteered to be part of it.
