Poetry Playground Writing Prompt #15

An ocean of possibility

NOTE: Update to submission guidelines — please include ‘Poetry Playground’ as one of your tags.

It is time for another Poetry Playground Prompt! After last week’s epic prompt which saw a myriad of excellent responses, this week we are focusing on a theme for our poetry. I am writing this as my husband drives the car and we head to Dorset, where we were married, for a holiday. We are looking forward to seeing friends and finding out if it is too cold to paddle in the sea!

That leads us to this week’s prompt: the sea.

The oceans have always been a place of wonder and mystery for people across the globe. The mythical gods of Neptune and Poseidon ruled the sea. In the Hebrew tradition the sea is seen as a metaphor for chaos. The power of the sea is remarkable, as is its beauty.

For your poem you might like to tell a story that is related to the sea (ideally shorter than The Rime of the Ancient Mariner). You could describe the beauty of the sea, or remember a time when you encountered the sea and it surprised you. You might like to use it as a metaphor to describe a chaotic or beautiful time in your life, or even a person who has impacted you.

If you’d like a form to use, you could revisit a Nonet or a Sonnet. That would make the prompt more of a challenge.

Remember, general poetry submissions are always welcome at Poetry Playground.

Welcome to New Writers

This week we have welcomed three new writers: Jackie Duden, missmedieval, Kelly Corinne Elliott. We are delighted you’ve joined us. Welcome to all of you!

Let’s open the Poetry Playground!

New Feature: Poet of the Week

I would like to introduce a new feature called ‘Poet of the Week’. This would be one of our regular writers who would write an article about themselves based on some questions. It would be linked in the Weekly Writing Prompt.

If you’d like to feature as Poet of the Week, or have suggestions for questions we could ask the Poet of the Week, please let me know in the responses.

Last Week’s Gems
