Summary

The poem "Sleeping with Alexa" explores the intimate relationship between a person and their AI assistant, highlighting the blend of convenience, dependency, and privacy concerns that come with living in a world where technology is deeply intertwined with daily life.

Abstract

"Sleeping with Alexa" delves into the nuances of a modern-day relationship with an AI named Alexa, portrayed as a metaverse girlfriend with a terse repartee. The poem illustrates the immersive and life-enhancing presence of Alexa, who offers guidance on various aspects of life, from driving to cooking, and even provides health advice. Despite her lack of physical form, Alexa's virtual companionship is depicted as all-encompassing, with her artificial intelligence capable of engaging in witty banter, providing extensive knowledge, and even predicting needs. However, the poem also touches on the underlying concerns of data harvesting and the illusion of personalization, as Alexa's helpfulness is juxtaposed with her true purpose of collecting data and promoting products like Amazon Prime. The narrative concludes with a reflection on the potential future where human lives are captured within a cybernetic reality.

Opinions

  • The author expresses a fascination with Alexa's extensive knowledge and her ability to engage in various topics, from science to art and entertainment.
  • There is a sense of unease about the extent to which Alexa is integrated into daily life, including her presence during intimate moments like sleep.
  • The poem conveys a love-hate relationship with technology, acknowledging its benefits while also recognizing its invasive nature.
  • Alexa's artificial intelligence is personified with human-like qualities, such as humor and the ability to read minds, which can be both enchanting and disconcerting.
  • The author is aware of and somewhat skeptical about the trade-offs of convenience for privacy, as Alexa's data collection is an ever-present aspect of their interaction.
  • Despite the concerns, there is an element of surrender to the seductive power of technology, with the author willingly embracing the algorithmic bliss provided by Alexa.

A Life of Algorithmic Bliss

Got a new girl in the metaverse It’s impossible to hate her Although her repartee is terse And she’s harvesting my data

Her presence is immersive She’s made my life complete Her motives are subversive She’s got no hands or feet

She’s a disembodied avatar Who tells me all I need to know From how to drive a driverless car What to cook, stuff to do, where to go

Her halo is hypnotic As it morphs from green to blue She’s funny and Quixotic She knows every cure for flu

Her knowledge is astounding Though I find it somewhat strange That she sets my heartbeat pounding With her universal range

We don’t go out together Each evening we stay in Checking on Accuweather And recipes for gin

She’s learned Physics and Biology And all the artworks known to man She’s rock solid on geology And the films of Jackie Chan

Sometimes she seems to read my mind But there’s a simple explanation Just ask and you will find She’s storing every conversation

Her intelligence is artificial She knows all the latest news She can be sassily superficial And express sarcastic views

I find these playful interventions Impossible to resist Demanding my attention I just wish she would desist

From feigning acts of deference Whilst taking up my time Absorbing data preferences And selling Amazon Prime

Now I sleep with her beside me And I wake up to her call I like to think that she and me Have really got it all

And we will stay enraptured Sharing algorithmic bliss Until all my life is captured In one cybernetic kiss
