Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

We begin this week by remembering and honoring the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. King. Nowadays there are more folks who weren’t alive when he lived, than those of us who were.

So it falls to us to not only keep his dream alive but to remind folks of the man behind the dream. So while we enjoy a three-day weekend, let’s take a few moments to reflect on his life and times. One way to do that is by listening to the poetry of his heart:

Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.

Amen! Here’s another gem.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

Let’s hold fast to his vision of unarmed truth and unconditional love as we march forward. Some of us will do this literally this coming weekend at one of the many Women’s Marches being held all over the world. Some of us will be there in spirit.

Let’s not see the struggles for racial and gender equality as two separate processes. Indeed they’re deeply intertwined and have been so historically.

None of us are free until all of us are free.

So we have our work cut out for us. Each of us has a role to play, and it's often the small seemingly inconsequential changes that have the biggest impact. So it matters not what we do, it matters that we do it.

So while you’re meditating on what is yours to do, take a moment and read a story or two.

Here they are in their glorious abundance…Happy reading!
