If You Could Get A Tattoo, What Would It Be?
Sunny Side Updates with The Brain is a Noodle, Week 39!
I flip-flop on this question. The art and beauty are the main reasons that I would want to get one, but my indecision and the price tag are reasons I haven’t already.
There are honestly so many good ideas of what to tattoo that if I had to sit down and choose one, I’d probably break. I have a hard enough time choosing “the right meal” to have already, and guess what — I have at least three to five square meals a day.
Decisions can be so hard!
Plus, a friend of mine who is working towards a full-sleeve had saved upfor about 12 months (the sum of the tattoos together was something in the $10k to $50k range, CAD). That’s not something I can afford anytime soon.
That’s why, from time to time, on my art twitter, I do tattoo-themed art shares too — feel free to join in if you’d like to!
Which brings me to this week’s survey question + shortform theme!
Shortform Theme of the Week
This week’s shortform theme is:Do you currently have a tattoo? If yes, what are the tattoo(s) and what do they symbolize? What do they mean to you and what’s the story behind getting them? If no, what are the reasons holding you back? (Are you like me, an indecisive budget-thin individual who still likes the art? May or may not be looking for validation here 🤣)
Submit your shortform piece (<150 words) now to share your thoughts! (For prompt-based pieces, you may exceed the 150 word limit, but aim for 150 words if the idea of a longer piece overwhelms you!)
This is just a guideline for inspiration! You may submit shortforms related to other concepts if other ideas come to you! :)
Most respondents sleep 7+ hours, which is pretty relatable, one of you sleep 5 hours on average? Whoever it is, it leaves me wondering whether this is circumstantial (life obligations mean you can only sleep this much) or whether this is your natural state — which some people, though rare, are!

Most surprising were these results — 50% of you told me you were early birds! As someone who grew up surrounded by night owls (which make you 40% of people in this survey), I’d expected something like at least 80% of people to respond this way.
And finally:

While 70% of us wake up feeling rested, 30% of us could do with more rest. Here’s hoping that for these folks, you’re able to get the support that you need to make that a realistic possibility!
Thank you to everyone who hopped in this informal (and definitely not representative of anything in the grand scheme of things) survey, it’s always so fun to see everyone’s responses!
✍ July Interview Challenge — with the correct link now!
Come join me in the monthly interview challenge! In this challenge, I’ll give you 5 reflection questions, 5 “name your faves” and 5 “prompts” to promote your articles!
Excited to get to know you as writers and overall cool human beings!
I’ve finally launched a project that my child self has always wanted to do: create a collaborative never-ending story with branch-offs into multiple different storylines!
I’m so excited to see what direction this story will take so please don’t be shy on submitting!
🧠🍜 [3] We’re in an ‘e-state’ Frame of Mind by Michael Burg, MD (AKA Medium Michael Burg)
‘Couples wander the street faces downcast, staring at screens. Entire families, out for dinner, barely acknowledge one another’s presence at the table, preferring instead to tweet or text or otherwise disengage from real life, seduced by the power of a 5 by 3 inch modern-day version of the idiot box.’
🧠🍜 [5] These Are My Wildest Dreams by Nia Simone McLeod
‘I keep a few scattered recollections of my dreams in a journal. Some entries are a page long, capturing vivid details like the colors of the sky. Some are one sentence long. Despite the length, rereading my entries is endlessly fascinating.’
🧠🍜 [6] Ask and You Shall Receive by Barbara Dalton
‘My mediocre existence in this world has taught me one huge lesson: ‘less is more.’ Although financially I have not been rewarded with short-form, my views and readership were.’
🧠🍜 [7] Reflux Dreams by Jupiter Grant
‘This haiku doubles as a Community Service Announcement: don’t eat right before you go to bed. If you do, like me, you will probably be kept awake with acid reflux and very strange dreams!’
🧠🍜 [8] Tetris by Anthony Jackson
‘Beautiful game, easy mechanics
Move some blocks over there
Rotate and scream because of it
Feel the anger warm your blood’
🧠🍜 [11] Liminal Transmission by Luke DeLalio
‘Now that I know the secret, it don’t work.
It’s a seance and the ghosts are just some guys you know from work with bag lunches.’
🧠🍜 [20] The art we all have done by Las siete y más
‘I know some may differ, but I find making a collage so cathartic, so fun. There is no way to get it wrong. You can do and undo as you like. It is more informal, without pressure, contrary to other types of arts.’
🧠🍜 [21] Who Is She? by Roselyn Violet
‘She’s a creator,
gave life to a beautiful little girl.
She’s a writer,
has written my beautiful future.’
🧠🍜 [22] Variations by K.S.
‘Dashing —
from milkweed to milkweed
a solitary monarch’
🧠🍜 [23] Maybe 10am by Luke DeLalio
‘What if I poured myself into a tight black Lululemon and then walked the dog? What would people think?’
🧠🍜 [25] Two Foods I Cannot Eat by Jennifer Dunne
‘As a kid, I went to a matinee double feature at our local 4th-run “movie palace”. I ordered movie theater popcorn with lots of butter. ‘
🧠🍜 [29] I’m Not a Waste Basket for Your Emails: A Rant by Penofgold
‘My box is full of your notes
and those of every person who studied
with a pyramid of people
taught to persuade people through
persevering, blaring emails,
to serve wealthy people
so you make more money.
I admire your hard work, but stop it!’
🧠🍜 [30] The Magic of Chlorophyll by Carolyn Hastings
‘There are literally thousands, if not millions, of different shades of green in nature. The actual number is arbitrary because color is a function of perception, and everyone perceives colours in their own way — think red-green color blindness.’
Thank you to Life is Amazing with Books and Writers, William J Spirdione, Jupiter Grant, Suzanne V. Tanner, Bhavna Narula and Veronika Jel for these pieces!
