Purpose of the Article

The purpose of this story is to explain the importance of creating personal publications on Medium, showing various benefits to writers and readers, and providing practical tips to configure them. I also offer my support to new writers to create their own publications.

Importance of Content Marketing for Creators

Being creative and prolific is essential for writers. We need to write engaging content and post frequently to attract an audience.

However, marketing is crucial for growth and sustained success unless we write for ourselves, such as in a personal diary.

I explained the importance of quality and quantity in previous articles; therefore, I will not go into details. Interested readers might check this story to learn about my experience and perspectives: How to Write Content Guaranteed to Get Views and Reads.

In this post, my goal is to highlight the importance of personal publications for marketing purposes, visibility, and findability, allowing us to quickly and effectively promote our content to potential readers.

I own six shared publications on Medium serving thousands of writers. It is an absolute pleasure for me to give voice to many writers and enjoy their content in my publications.

Collaboration among writers and readers is a distinguishing feature of this platform. Medium is a platform where words matter.

Some writers ask me why I host most of my stories in a personal publication instead of shared publications. In fact, I do both as they have different benefits.

Therefore, the purpose of this post is to explain my unique approach based on experience and observations over the last three years. I believe my strategy might be helpful to new writers.

New writers ask me whether it is better to self-publish or use publications. My answer is publications plus creating their own publications after they post around 100 stories which can look like a magazine.

Even though I post my stories in numerous shared publications, my preferred way is to keep my specific and memorable stories in a personal publication for various reasons.

Personal publications are not only useful for writers but also valuable for readers. My subscribers appreciate my service as they can easily access my content in a single place when they need it.

How to Create a Personal Publication on Medium

Creating a publication on this platform is easy and free. Every writer is allowed to create multiple publications on Medium. All we need to do is click on the publication’s entry on our profile picture and choose the new publication tab.

We give a name to the pub, add a tagline, describe it in a few words, and add an avatar. These are required fields. In addition, optionally, we can add a logo and a cover image.

The next step is adding contact details, social media links, topics, writers, and editors if you want to share it with others.

Once we create the publication, it registers on Medium and search engines. Then, we can add our stories and configure them in a preferred layout. There are multiple options.

As I explain in the following sections, owning a personal publication might bring various benefits to writers.

Here Are the Seven Reasons Writers Might Create and Own a Personal Publication on Medium.

1 — Supports your specific audience.

The most important benefit of having a personal publication is to support my audience. Finding content on this platform can be challenging for readers. If you write hundreds of stories like me, and they are all over the place, our audience can hardly find them.

It is, of course, valuable to diversify content on various publications. However, having a specific collection for a selected audience group can be helpful based on my experience.

My solution was to keep my health and well-being articles in a single publication called EUPHORIA. I also created another personal publication about my writing and editing, as the articles related to these topics might not be relevant to my audience following health and well-being topics.

2 — Demonstrates your expertise.

Keeping content related to the same or similar topics might show our expertise in the field. However, writers who write about multiple topics with no specific niche can still own a publication, as the interface allows writers to use up to seven topics.

When we tag articles using specific topic names, they can automatically show in the allocated tabs at the publication’s top panel. We can configure this using the navigation tool of the publication.

I use seven tags in the navigation options such as health, mental health, self-improvement, lifestyle, fitness, and science. A majority of my subscribers are interested in these topics. I identified them by reviewing the stats provided in my older stories.

We can also add one external link to the navigation bar. I use my other publication in case my readers might be interested in writing and editing. Some writers I help use their websites or stores.

3 — Allows you to share content with a single link.

For me, the most useful aspect of a publication is sharing it easily with readers or on social media platforms.

When a reader wants to access my stories, rather than sending them multiple links, I provide the link to the publication in an email or other communication tools.

We can also use the publication link to tweet or post on other social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Quora, or Pinterest. I created multiple interfaces for these platforms, such as Quora spaces, LinkedIn groups, Pinterest boards, or Facebook pages, that writers can use freely.

When readers share the link of your publication on social media, the social signals might get more robust and gain SEO value in search engines.

For example, my publication was indexed by search engines bringing many external viewers who can be potential subscribers.

4 — Enables to obtain stats from a single portal.

Publications have useful dashboards showing various stats, such as the number of views, reading times, and visitors monthly or three monthly.

We can also see the number of followers and their accounts. It shows us how many unique visitors visit the publication daily and provide an average monthly and the last three months.

Measuring the performance of the publication can be valuable. For example, we can change our publishing strategy or tactics based on stats. We can see which stories perform and sort them out based on views, reading times, and fans.

5 — Allows RSS to syndicate content on distribution services.

RSS is a simple yet powerful tool in content development and blogging sites. It stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is an easy way to find information that’s important to readers. It saves time from browsing or searching for information on websites.

Fortunately, Medium has an excellent RSS service. It is not 100% reliable, but from my experience, it does the job over 90%. So I am grateful for the service. It allows me to syndicate my content to various platforms, such as the Amazon author page and Goodreads, including my personal blog and website.

All we need to provide is the RSS feed code assigned to our account or publication. We can even syndicate content based on tags. One of the best ways to use RSS is to create free magazines without manual intervention. For example, I can syndicate my publication to a Flipboard magazine.

6 — You might leverage the power of lists.

Medium has powerful tools, but not many writers seem to utilize them, as some writers are unaware of them from my observations.

One of the most effective and easy-to-use tools is creating lists. They are powerful because they show on the profile. So a new reader might be curious and check your lists to understand the type of stories you are collecting and reading.

So if you own a publication, you can simply create a list with the selected stories from your publication. Here is a sample list that I made for my publication. It shows on my profile when a new reader finds my account on this platform.

7 — Allows posting publication newsletters.

Publications have built-in newsletter tools. Owners can create as many newsletters as they want. The tool automatically emails the newsletter to subscribers.

There are additional features, such as linking the newsletter to each story published in the publication as a footer. This feature is valuable because each story can potentially bring new subscribers.

In addition, newsletters can be published on Medium as a story and can even be monetized. So, a single story through the newsletter service might reach out to a broader audience.

I offer free support to writers to create publications.

Since my goal is every writer’s success on this platform, I helped many writers create their own publications for visibility and findability on this vast content ocean. They all gained noticeable benefits.

These writers created the basis and gave me editorial access. Then I designed the publication layout for them. It doesn’t take too much time as I have done many. I also create visibility for them in my circles.

I find practical ways to promote their publications. For example, I add them to a curated collection and share them with my audience to create visibility. Or share them with my subscribers on Substack or via email who are interested in specific topics.

I also created multiple promotional channels on my Slack workspace so writers can share their publications, newsletters, blogs, educational materials, and story links. These channels are free for all community members.

These are free giveback services to my proteges and collaborators. If you are interested in creating a publication and need support, you may contact me on my Slack workspace. I will be glad to help. If you don’t have access to my Slack, you might request an invitation via this link.

Conclusions and Takeaways

Writing quality content and regular posting is essential for writers’ success. However, building an audience and gaining visibility can be difficult without marketing our content.

A personal publication is a powerful marketing and branding tool that Medium allows every writer. Since publications are part of the ecosystem, other tools, such as lists and audience building, can be incorporated into publication services.

Creating, designing, and maintaining a publication on Medium is easy. Anyone can own and manage a publication with little support and effort.

Having a shared publication might be helpful, but it requires significant effort. Even though shared publications might bring some intangible benefits, they don’t have any tangible benefits or monetary value.

However, managing a personal publication is much easier, requires less effort, and brings no responsibility for the content of others.

Therefore, I believe every writer might consider owning a personal publication for the reasons I covered in this article. Personal publications are also valuable for readers.
