THE DAILY CUPPA WALKABOUT COLLECTION #7

Herbal Tea and Stories For You

A gathering of The Daily Walkabout stories 12-18 to 12–31, 2021 and friends from different countries sharing tea.

A Courtyard Garden in London. Photo courtesy of Hilary Blair.

As I Walkabout the world of plants, traditions, recipes, and styles of seeking community and adding to our repository of healthy eating, I find I’ve so much in common with people living in faraway lands.

Along with amazing stories of plants, culture, tradition, and yummy recipes from at home and from afar, I find stories about the herbs I use in my daily beverages — my herbal teas.

From Australia, Jane Frost (Jane Grows Garden Rooms) shares about native hibiscus. I purchase hibiscus flowers and gather hawthorn berries locally. With these, I make a blend that I drink every day. How lovely is that? Sharing a cup of tea together.

Hawthorn berries are cleaned and ready to dry.

Even though I grow, and use, many of these plants every day; and have all my life. I’m learning so much as our Walkabout writers share their stories.

From others around our world, I learn different ways to use plants. In this story from I. Trudie Palmer, I learned a new herbal tea blend.

I. Trudie Palmer relaxes as the year comes to an end:

Sitting at my desk, I’m renewing myself with a mug of herbal tea — lemongrass, Chaga mushroom, and stinging nettle.

As I read her story, I smiled as the plants she uses in her mug of herbal tea are some which I use regularly. I grow lemongrass; I gather stinging nettle, and I purchase Chaga. I’ve never mixed them together, but am looking forward to trying this Caribbean brew.

My mug of lemongrass herbal tea on my desk. I make the lemongrass rings every year. Katie Michaelson.

I hope you find some treasures from our end-of-the-year collection.

Our Featured Long-Form Article

For our featured long-form story, I chose Rosie Alderson, PhD’s interesting and science-informed piece about Brussel sprouts. I love them. Often my meal is just sprouts, with olive oil and salt and pepper. It never occurred to me that it was in my genes! Are you a lover or a hater — of the sprouts?

Thank You For Joining Us on Our Walkabout.

We are a world community and share information about our cultural traditions and the plants, recipes, herbs, and styles of seeking healthy eating.

This edition has been extra fun, as so many of my plant friends were discussed. If you read JM Heatherly’s stories about lavender and rosemary, you know a bit about two plants I grow all year in my home. I discovered I. Trudie Palmer makes an herbal brew from three plants I consume daily. And Jane Frost (Jane Grows Garden Rooms) shared about hibiscus which I also drink a tea from every day.
