Summary

This content provides a comprehensive list and categorization of 21 spiritual purposes for human life, emphasizing their interconnectedness and equality.

Abstract

The content starts with a brief introduction on the importance of finding one's purpose in life, suggesting that it's chosen before incarnation and influenced by past lives and karma. The author then presents the four major types of life purposes: Personal Growth & Ascension, Celebrating Life, Creating a Better World, and No Purpose Purposes. Each type has several purposes, which are explained in detail. For instance, Personal Growth & Ascension includes realizing one's true identity, transcending duality, and escaping the Matrix. Celebrating Life focuses on happiness, experiencing and celebrating creation, and integrating the physical and spiritual. Creating a Better World includes creating, loving unconditionally, and serving. No Purpose Purposes emphasize the idea that life has no inherent purpose, and it is up to individuals to define their own purpose.

[0] The Purpose of Life

I have collected many suggestions for the ‘Ultimate Purpose of Life’ from both teachers and students of spirituality. I summarized those into 21 distinct ways of wording “purposes of life”.

After compiling that list, I found we can group the 21 purposes into 4 types:

  • Type 1 — Spiritual Ascension Purposes (Life as a School)
  • Type 2 — Celebrating Our Life Purposes (in the Ultimate Playground)
  • Type 3 — Creating a Better World Purposes (Creating Our Reality)
  • Type 4 — No Purpose Purposes (Beyond the Ego-Mind)

They are all good and are all equally valid. They overlap because they are all related to one another. And because of that, if we realize one purpose, the others are readily at hand.

But first, why do we need a purpose for life? Most New Age spiritualists say we chose our individual purpose before we were incarnated in our present life. It was the reason we even bothered to come into this existence. Hinduism calls that our “dharma” (discussed more below). For both, past life incarnations and karma influence much of our personal purpose in this life.

Another view (from Matias De Stefano, YouTube link) says our purpose comes from our being a biological system that is moving forward by adapting to our environment. This is a lot like Darwin’s original concept of evolution, which was based on adapting to changing ecosystems. But from a spiritual perspective, we are adapting to an environment/ecosystem that is the entire multidimensional cosmos/universe we exist in. This applies even for the “No Purpose Purposes”.

The most common teaching is that to find our purpose, we should follow our joy and excitement — what makes us most happy. Some add the comment “with integrity” or “with discernment” so it will not be entirely hedonistic. (See section [6.1] for more on that.)

I have also heard that we all have 3 types of dharma/purposes that we need to address simultaneously:

  1. pursuing our life passions,
  2. meeting our life responsibilities related to who we are now, and
  3. dealing with our life challenges that arise often unexpectedly.

The most common responses I have seen on spiritual Facebook groups to questions about our life purpose are:

  • To learn to love myself and express peace and love to all others
  • To help/guide, teach/inspire, heal/serve others to overcome their challenges and learn to love themselves and the world

Your purpose is unique, as is everyone’s. No two people have the exact same purpose or path in life.

Follow what resonates positively for you. Avoid anything that resonates negatively. Be careful following what others say and anything your ego has internalized to be your purpose.

Take suggestions you hear, including those given here, with a grain of salt. What works well for one person could be a spiritual disaster for another. But even mistakes are perfect in a perfect universe.

You have multiple purposes, and they will change with time. And you might find that you share paths with other like-minded souls in one or more of the categories below.

*** With that in mind, I have heard that the purpose of life is…

[1] Type 1 — PERSONAL GROWTH & ASCENSION (Life as a School)

This first set of purposes sees life as a “school”. They all reflect “learning” and one often builds upon the previous. But they are still distinct in emphasis, and we can approach each separately.

[1.1] To Answer the Question: Who Am I?

This question is fundamental to all other purposes in this section. We can also state it as What Is My Purpose? Some say that from our 3rd Dimension perspective, life will always be a mystery, and only our soul knows the purpose of our life. That purpose seems unique to each person. Others say that we each define our own purpose. (Type [4.2] below is also about defining your purpose.)

The only purpose in life is to be totally who you are. — Rhonda Byrne, The Greatest Secret

[1.2] To Expand, Grow, Evolve, & Ascend

toward Self Realization, Awakening, Enlightenment, Truth, a Higher State of Consciousness, a Higher Dimensional Reality, or a Lighter Density of Being. Some people add the verb “to Heal” to the first part of this purpose. Others relate this to “Ending Your Karmic Cycle” and “Learning to Accept and Love Yourself”.

[1.3] To Learn and Develop our Subtle Energies & Psychic Abilities

This is often part of the ascension process [1.2], but not always (see article above). We do that to expand our connections and relationships on Earth and to other planets and other dimensions. Everything, including the past and future, is a variation in vibration, frequency, and energy. The purpose of our 3rd Dimension (3D) life is to learn to work with the non-physical energies of the universe.

Now. In your system of reality, you are learning what mental energy is and how to use it. You do this by constantly transforming your thoughts and emotions into physical form. You are supposed to get a clear picture of your inner development by perceiving the exterior environment. What seems to be a perception, an objective concrete event, independent and apart from you, the perceiver, is instead the physical materialization of the perceiver’s own inner emotions, energy, and mental environment. —Seth/Jane Roberts, The Early Sessions, Book 9, session 469 on March 19, 1969

[1.4] To Remember that We are Not our Thoughts, Emotions, Body, and Actions

We are our consciousness, Soul, or Higher Self, creating our world with these aspects (or “tools”) that the universe has given us. Knowing this is Liberation and Freedom from the limitations that we associate with the 3D physical world aspects of us. This purpose relates to [1.2] and [3.1]. We sometimes see it as transcending (or killing) the ego.

[1.5] To Remember that We are God/Source/All-That-Is/The Absolute

which we forgot just so we can have this amazing remembering (awakening) experience. It is all a divine plan by Source to experience itself inside and out. Some say that when we remember we are Source, we are fulfilling our Soul’s desires for our life (see also [1.1]), and we are finally understanding the “cosmic joke”. The saying that “love wanted to experience itself” relates to this, as well as to [3.2] below.

A slightly different take on this is to become “God” in the 3rd Dimension. This means our purpose is to be a vehicle for our Soul to be manifested as God/Source in physical form. Some say God/Source wants to “enjoy” 3D reality and our purpose is to do that (like [2.1] & [2.2], below). Others say that, as an aspect of God/Source, we are here to be creators also — to create the universe that we (our Soul) desires.

Your human purpose is to live as your soul in this human reality. Your purpose is to live aware of yourself as this eternal light of God. Your purpose is to awaken. To know yourself as the light. Your purpose is to become enlightened, to feel yourself as the bliss, and to know everything as God, everything as one. — Lincoln Gergar, Channel for Higher Self (quote from the Higher Self Inner Circle)

[1.6] To Transcend the Duality of Thoughts & Forms to Reach Oneness with Our True Reality

This means coming into union with “God”, Source, or the Quantum/Unified Field of all existence. We often refer to that as ‘God Consciousness’. It is the goal of non-dual philosophies, such as the Advaita Vedanta school of Hinduism. It is like [1.5], but with more of a focus on consciousness. It is also a foundation for [2.5], [2.6], [3.2], and [4.3], and probably more below.

Never forget that the universe is a single living organism possessed of one substance and one soul, holding all things suspended in a single consciousness and creating all things with a single purpose that they may work together spinning and weaving and knotting whatever comes to pass. — Marcus Aurilieus (121–180 CE)

[1.7] To Escape the Matrix

Some believe that we have no “free will” and that everything in life is pre-determined either by God/Source or by higher intelligence extraterrestrial beings. For some, the lack of free will only applies to the 3rd Dimension. Escaping the limits of 3D frees us from The Matrix and gives us free will. In that case, all the purposes listed above, [1.2] to [1.6], would do that. Others, however, see no possibility of expressing free will in any of the spiritual dimensions. This purpose may relate to [4.1] below.

For my view of free will, see:

[2] Type 2 — CELEBRATING LIFE (the Ultimate Playground)

This second group of life purposes focuses on our relationships with other people, our environment (social and physical), and our World. Our 3D world is the “ultimate playground” for creating and experiencing being.

[2.1] To Be Happy, to Laugh, to Love Unconditionally, & to Have Fun

as expressed through our physical body (forms of movement), our emotions (reaching higher vibrations), and our mind (through intellectual stimulation) as we interact with others on the 3rd Dimensional planet that we incarnated on.

You created the Earth you are currently experiencing. You will create the next reality if/when you leave this Earth. To ascend to another dimension, you need to be fully aligned, fully connected, and fully “happy” with your current dimension. Otherwise, you will not be welcomed in the next dimension. That is why we are on a spiritual path — to reach that alignment. — (I posted this in a Facebook group discussion about wanting to leave this problematic planet we are on.)

[2.2] To Experience & Celebrate the Universe, Creation, & Our Life

including both the good and the bad. We can think of this as:

  • Seeing and experiencing the world exactly as it is, and
  • Using the unique skills this incarnation has given us.

When we accept everything as it is, and when we follow our uniqueness, we are living in the flow of existence. We are pursuing our life passions (with integrity and discernment), and we have the full support of nature and Source in everything we do. (That is closely related to dharma in section [6.5].)

This is the idea behind the philosophies of Be Here Now and to know and live the ‘Tao’ and the ‘I Am Presence’.

“Always want what is happening now and you will always have everything you want.” — anonymous

An expanded version of this is to seek and experience everything that our universe has to offer. According to Matias De Stefano, for beings in the Sirius star system, the purpose of life is “to experience every time and space reality in the universe and to bring them all into oneself”. (I discuss this view more in section [7] below.)

Seth/Jane Roberts says that the purpose of life is to express all the physical and mental capabilities that we brought into our present incarnation. This is being our true self to the fullest extent possible.

“In physical reality, if you will forgive me, life is the name of the game — and the game is based upon value fulfillment. That means simply that each form of life seeks toward the fulfillment and unfolding of all of the capacities that it senses within its living framework, knowing that in that individual fulfillment each other species of life is also benefited… Life is sacred — all life — and again, all life seeks value fulfillment, not simply physical survival.” — Seth/Jane Roberts, Dreams, Evolution and Value Fulfillment, Volume 2, session 910 on April 23, 1980

Also related to this:

[2.3] To Realize our Inseparable Connection & Oneness with our Physical Reality

our Human Life, Mother Earth/Gaia, and our Physical Universe. This is often called ‘Unity Consciousness’. We are physical beings as much as we are spiritual ones, and what we do to our physical environment, we do to us. (Related to [1.6] and [2.2], and also to ‘Deep Ecology’.) Related to this:

[2.4] To Deeply Experience and Suffer Duality, Separation, & Diversity

because Earth is an especially good place to do that, compared to higher dimensions of reality [1.7]. That deep experience of separation is a catalyst for growth, which then moves into even higher states of happiness [2.1] and oneness [2.2]. See, for example:

[2.5] To Integrate Our Physical Self with Our Spiritual Self

To be both a physical being and a spiritual being. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi liked to call this living 200% of life. I see it in my yoga asana practices (at my local yoga studio), and as the goal of karma yoga (the yoga of action and right livelihood). (See section [6.3] for more on karma.) Spiritual teachings can be overwhelmingly mental. Bringing them back to earth can be as difficult as the mental challenges.

[2.6] To Know the All Beings are Always Performing at their Highest Capability

at each moment in time. We can approach this purpose and [2.5] from an intellectual understanding. But to know this fully requires a degree of “Unity Consciousness”. When we realize the oneness of all creation, then we cannot but see the perfection of ourself and everything else. That is not an intellectual, ego-based realization, but a deeper knowing within us. That knowing seems to come more naturally to some people than others. This purpose is also related to the purposes in section [1] above and to [3.2] below.

[2.7] To Just Be.

There is no other purpose than to just live and exist. Also included in this is “It is Impossible to Know Our Purpose” because the result is the same. Related to [2.6], we can also tweak this idea a little “To Just Be” the Best Version of Yourself That You Can. We do what you do, with no purpose. The universe will define our purpose — it is not our job to do so. That leads directly into the next group of life purposes.

“The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.” — Alan Watts

and

“Always want what is happening now, then you will always have whatever you want.” — anon.

Elan is an Essessani ET channeled by Andrew Bayuk in the early 1990s. In this 17min recording (on YouTube) he discusses his society’s view on the purpose of existence, which is so Source/God/The Absolute can have the joy of experiencing something “for the very first time”.

[3] Type 3 — CREATING A BETTER WORLD (Creating Our Reality)

This third group of life purposes is more action-oriented, applying the first set (Type 1 — Spiritual Ascension) to raise the vibration of the entire planet (Type 2 — Celebrating Life).

[3.1] To Create.

‘God’ created the universe, and we are here to create our life experience; to learn how to “create our own reality”, both individually and collectively. I have also heard this described as living consciously as the creator in our body, without being limited by our physical, emotional, and ego conditioning.

[3.2] To Love, Blissfully and Unconditionally, Ourselves, Others, and All Existence.

By doing this ourselves, we raise the love energy of others and our world. Loving Kindness for others is how some Buddhists look at this. We do this mostly by serving as a model of expressing loving energy at all times. Some specifically see themselves as teaching and helping others to do this. (I do that through my writing.) Like many other life purposes, this requires a higher state of consciousness to be realized fully (see section [1] above for more on that).

[3.3] To Bring Light to the Darkness,

to raise the physical, social, and emotional collective consciousness of our planet through our personal development. To specifically help and teach others to come into the light.

“There is nothing more stimulating, more worthy of actualization, than the desire to change the world for the better. That is indeed each person’s mission (intently). You begin by working in that area of activity that is your own unique one, with your own life and activities. You begin in the corner of an office, or on the assembly line, or in the advertising agency, or in the kitchen. You begin where you are.” — Seth/Jane Roberts, The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events, Session 850 on May 2, 1979

[3.4] To Serve Others,

to guide, inspire, teach, heal, and care for those in need and our planet. There are many ways to do this through large and small actions that we take. Some say that to Serve God or to Love Jesus is a service, which relates this purpose to [1.5] (to remember that we are God/Source).

Both [3.3] and [3.4] are to Make the World a Better Place and to make a positive impact through the life we live. The fundamental difference is that [3.3] is more about personal development, which may involve becoming a spiritual teacher, coach, or guide. [3.4] is more about service and devotion to others and is something that we see in those we call saints, such as Mother Teresa.

This article gives some deeper insights on Serving Others:

“Remember that each segment of life is motivated by value fulfillment and is therefore always attempting to use and develop all of its abilities and potentials, and to express itself in as many probable ways as possible… in a process that takes into consideration the needs and desires of each other segment of life.” — Seth/Jane Roberts, The Way Toward Health, session on May 6, 1984

Being responsible is not doing what others and the world expect of you, but giving the best you can to the world. — Matias De Stefano, La Culpa

[4] Type 4 — NO PURPOSE PURPOSES (Beyond the Ego-Mind)

All the purposes above are based on our 3D logical and ego-mind thinking and experiencing. Some of those suggest that something exists beyond the ego. But they all start with the thinking mind. There is nothing wrong with that since we are, as humans, living in a 3D reality. But a non-logical perspective can also have value.

[4.1] Life has No Purpose Until We Give It Purpose.

This makes [4.1] the foundation for all the other life purposes listed above. We start with “no purpose” and we “create purpose”. It also assumes that we have the free will to select our life purpose, whereas [4.1] says there is no free will, there is just what is. (This also partially relates to [1.1] above, in which our soul decides our life’s purpose.)

“You don’t find your purpose, you create it.” — anon.

[4.2] To Know Life and Existence Are Always Perfect in Every Way.

That means every person, being, entity, object, form, event, action, emotion, thought, word spoken, illness, political leader, accident, and life is perfect. It is all the creation, manifestation, and reflection of God or Source. This purpose used to be Section 2 (Celebrate Life), but I moved it here because it does not really have a purpose.

This purpose integrates all the other purposes above. It especially includes: — [1.5] To Remember that we are God/Source/All-That-Is/The Absolute. — [2.2] To Experience and to Celebrate the Universe, Creation, and Our Life exactly as it is. — [3.2] To Love, Blissfully and Unconditionally, Ourselves, Others, and All Existence. — [4.1] There is No Purpose or Meaning for Life, except the focus here is less on “no thing” and more on existence “as it is, which also related to [2.7] (to just be).

[4.3] There is No Purpose and No Meaning for Life.

This might be another way of saying [2.7], which is “to just be”. But “just being” still seems to have purpose and meaning, which we often see being given by the universe (Source/The Higher Self).

“No Purpose” is beyond “just being”. Even the universe has no meaning, which is more aligned with the teachings of Radical Nondualism (or Neo-Advaita). Radical nondualism argues that even “we” do not exist. There is just energy appearing to happen and being witnessed by an undefinable “Source”.

Reality does not need to have a meaning to be glorious. No meaning that our human mind produces can ever capture the wonder of existence. (This also relates to [1.5] & [1.6].)

And finally, the reason I like this perspective is it reflects an infinite universe, where there are no limits of any kind. When we have no limits (including definition of “purpose”), then All Things are Possible.

“For some reason, I can’t explain this profound joy of living in a completely meaningless world.” — anon.

and

These “No Purpose” purposes may offer the most important lesson on this list. We need to stop thinking about the purpose of existence and our life. Instead, we need to feel our life, to be it intuitively, without thinking, and beyond thinking.

“You will never understand life by thinking about it. You will only understand concepts and words about life.” — Lincoln Gergar, Channel for Higher Self

[5] Needs, Wants, & Purposes

It can sometimes be difficult for us to distinguish between a Need, a Want, and a Purpose. Needs are things we absolutely must have to survive in our physical form on this 3D planet. Wants are things we would like to have but are not essential for our physical survival.

What about a Purpose? Is it something we Need or just something we Want?

From a strictly 3D physical reality perspective, a Purpose is more of a Want than a Need. Like any other plant or animal, we are contributing to the biology of the planet through our existence. But we do not really need to have anything beyond that to survive.

But from a higher spiritual perspective, a Purpose is also a Need. We cannot survive as a spiritual being without having a purpose. It gives us meaning and a reason for existing beyond the basic needs of survival.

[5.1] Hinduism’s “Purusharthas” & Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs”

The Purusharthas (or Puruṣārthas) are the four purposes or goals of human life according to Hinduism. We must meet these goals for a fulfilling and happy life.

  1. Artha — Survival. Food, clothing, and shelter required to do other things in life; material prosperity to allow Kama, Dharma, and Moksha.
  2. Kama — Pleasure. Desire, passions, sensory pleasure, enjoyment, affection; but these must not violate Artha, Dharma, and Moksha.
  3. Dharma — Doing the right thing. This included moral obligation and duties that support social harmony, as well as pursing one’s true calling and supporting Artha, Kama, and Moksha. (See section [6.5] for more on dharma.)
  4. Moksha — Liberation. Self-knowledge, self-realization, enlightenment, finding happiness within, freedom from the cycle of reincarnation (death and rebirth). Unlike the other, many (most?) humans will live their life never knowing Moksha is possible.

These are like Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which include, from bottom to top: Physiological needs, Safety needs, Love and social belonging needs, Self-esteem needs, Cognitive needs, Aesthetic needs, Self-actualization needs, and Transcendent needs. (Maslow added Transcendent needs later in his life. Most college textbook depictions of his model do not include that level.)

In both the Purusharthas and Maslow’s model, the earlier sets are Needs more than Purpose. We need to survive, be safe, and below. The higher levels sets are more Purpose than Needs. We want to live a morally good life, express our creativity, and be free from suffering.

Looking at these different ideas, it is apparent that we often blur the division between what is a Need and what is a Purpose.

[6] How to Find Your Purpose

[6.1] Excitement with Discernment & Integrity

The most common recommendation for finding your purpose is to pursue what excites you the most (or to pursue your passions). It is important to qualify that with the condition that such a pursuit is done with discernment or integrity.

  • Discernment means judging or deciding based on a deeper and more careful reflection and understanding of the details involved.
  • Integrity means being honest, moral, and ethical, and seeking the best possible outcome for all aspects of oneself and the world (the integrated whole).

So, you pursue your passions as best you can in a way that is best for you and the rest of the world physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually. That is the message below ⬇, as channeled from Elan/Andrew Bayuk (on YouTube). (Elan is an Essessani ET, similar to Bashar/Darryl Anka and Ryo/Tyler Ellison.)

[6.2] Harmonizing Multiple Purposes

We are multidimensional beings. We focus on our 3D life experience in this 3D world incarnation. But aspects of us also exist in other dimensions and other incarnations. Many say that those aspects of our self, while very separate, tend to share common purposes and related experiences.

Even in our 3rd Dimension, however, we have multiple personalities and roles to play. The results are multiple purposes, as seen in the 4 Purusharthas discussed above. For more on your many “yous”, see:

Each of our personalities may have unique purposes or paths. Harmonizing our separate roles/purposes can help bring stability to the chaos that often dominates modern life. It will also bring more synchronicities (discussed below), as our roles and purposes better support one another.

Being a Seth/Jane Roberts fan, here is my favorite quote of his on the multidimensional purpose of human life. It covers much of the territory above.

“Physically speaking, man’s purpose is to help enrich the quality of existence in all of its dimensions. Spiritually speaking, his purpose is to understand the qualities of love and creativity, to intellectually and psychically understand the sources of his being, and to lovingly create other dimensions of reality of which he is presently unaware.” — Seth/Jane Roberts, (1986). Dreams, “Evolution”, and Value Fulfillment, Vol. 1, session 901 on February 18, 1980

[6.3] Purpose, Synchronicities, Luck, & Karma

One way to tell if a purpose you pursue is the right one for you is to look for positive synchronicities. Positive synchronicities are unplanned and unexpected events that arise to support us on our path. They feel like “good karma” or “good luck”. But they are really messages from the universe (or our True Self) that we are spiritually aligned with our life purpose.

Alternatively, if we encounter negative synchronicities (blockages) we may need to reconsider our current path. Negative synchronicities are important lessons. We might not need to change our purpose, but we might need to take it more slowly and mindfully to make sure we learn those lessons well.

A common lesson for many of us to learn is to let go of our ego-based desires. Your ego is a temporary form that we take on in our present 3D incarnation. Many say it is an illusion, though it is useful for enhancing 3D experiences.

Being a 3D form, our ego can never know our True Self (or soul-self), which is beyond all manifest creations. But it is our soul-self that assigns (or chooses) our ego-self’s purpose and mission in this incarnation. Our ego veils our soul-self so we can focus entirely on 3D experiences. But that blurs our understanding of our life's purpose.

We meditate to transcend the ego and allow our True Self and purpose to come through. We give up seeking our purpose (from our ego-self) to live our purpose (from our soul-self). Synchronicities, good karma, and good luck are beyond our ego. They are how we know we are on the right path.

[6.4] Am I On the Right Path?

How our purpose unfolds in our life is our spiritual path. As mentioned at the start of this article, each of us has a unique purpose in this universe. We see that in our unique paths — no 2 paths are exactly the same.

From the perspective of Source/God/The Absolute, there is no such thing as a “wrong path”. You have free will to choose a longer or shorter path. But whatever you choose is the perfect decision at that moment. Every choice will result in consequences, and all consequences are messages or lessons for us.

Remember that although our ego-self feels limited by space and time, our True Self is infinite and eternal. There is really no hurry to go anywhere because we are already everywhere all the time from our soul’s perspective. As mentioned above, the more we transcend our ego-self, the more we live as our soul-self.

This article addresses finding our path/purpose/mission in life. It is based on a channeled message from my Energy Group/Higher Self for a friend of mine. It may give you some insight into how to understand your path in life.

[6.5] Dharma & Archetypes: Fully Living Your Purpose

Once you have found your purpose/path/mission in life, the most important thing is to live it to its fullest. The universe wants nothing short of that from us. Hinduism calls that our dharma.

In the west, we sometimes associate dharma with archetypes or generalized types of personalities and life paths. Here are some examples (you can be more than one of these at a time, as in section [6.2]):

— Regular Guy/Gal, — Hero/Athlete, — Caregiver/Healer, — Explorer/Seeker, — Rebel/Activist, — Lover/Romantic, — Artist/Visionary, — Jester/Entertainer, — Sage/Teacher, — Scientist/Psychic, — Ruler/Leader, — Idealist/Philosopher

For a complete listing of these types of archetypes, see the Wikipedia section on Neo-Jungian Archetypes:

As noted in section [2.2] above, when we are living our dharma, we are celebrating our life and have the full support of nature and the universe. Manifestations are instantaneous because what we want is what nature and the universe want.

This quote ⬇ from Seth/Jane Roberts came to me at about the time I retired from my professional career and was seeking a new path for myself. I felt Seth was talking directly to me when I read this…

You should also use your abilities as best you can in your outside occupation. There is no saying, “Now I will use my abilities, and now I will not.” They must be used or they will not be fulfilled. The use broadens them and adds to them. … There can be no holding back of commitment, involvement, or ability in one aspect of your lives, but it will be reflected in others — that is, in other aspects where you want growth. You know I do not mean that you should give your energy to every weird cause, but that you should speak out your opinions, that you should use your abilities in your outside endeavors for your own sake. … You cannot afford to use half of your abilities. You have aimed too high for that. If you follow this advice, you will find extra dimension, not only in your work but in all aspects of your daily lives, both psychic and physical. Any other course leads to a stunting of growth. … Problems might arise, but you are fully capable of handling them if they do. And no problems means no growth, and no growth means no value fulfillment. — Seth/Jane Roberts, The Early Sessions, Book 2, session 58 on June 1, 1964

  • I heard Matias De Stefano talking (Gaia.tv link) about his memory of a lifetime on a planet in the Sirius star system some 16 million years ago. The purpose or goal of life for the Sirians on that planet was “to experience every time and space reality in the universe and bring them all into one’s self”. They do that by (1) learning or seeing what we are capable of as individuals [1.3], (2) remembering who we are [1.5], and (3) knowing ourselves, which is how the universe comes to know itself [1.1]. That also closely relates to [2.2] on the list above (to celebrate the universe as it is), which is why I did not create another purpose based on it.
  • This (YouTube link below) is a New Age spiritual and psychological perspective on our life's purpose. The discussion covers the suffering that can come from pursuing a purpose that is too ego-centric (which I do not cover in the article above). While I might disagree with the claim that spirituality is the ultimate purpose for everyone in every lifetime, I think the ego discussion is good.
