From My Awakening Series
The Ultimate Lesson: My Life Has Nothing to Do With Me
[Updated March 3, 2022] My ‘outer-ego-self’ is one surprisingly small part of my unlimited ‘inner-soul-self’.

This article is in 3 parts, written at 3 different times. Each part is a further expansion of my spiritual path and how I understand and interpret this quote:
I have come so that you can have life… and have it more abundantly. There is no other reason for me to be here. My life has nothing to do with me. It is all about the people I touch in my life and the way I touch them. — Neal Donald Walsch, author of the “Conversations with God” book series (*)
PART 1 (Sept 15, 2020)
I found the quote above deeply haunting. That is because I think and behave as though my life was all about me. That is what the world has taught and told me for most of my life. But deep inside, I know there is truth in what Neal Donald Walsch says.
For me, there are 2 meanings of the quote above…
- Who I am is far more than what I think is “me”. My true self is Source/The Absolute/All-That-Is. — When I normally think of “me”, I only include a minuscule part of the larger, truer “me”. I am a singular perspective (or fractal) of All-That-Is. — There is only the oneness of all life manifesting. It then witnesses its manifestations from infinite perspectives, one of which is called “my life”. My true self is the witnessing. —My true self is all that I see, know, and experience (All-That-Is). When I think of all “the people I touch in my life”, I am honoring the oneness of all that I truly am, of my authentic self.
- My desires, decisions, and actions have a larger significance than my apparent personal satisfaction. — Everything that comes up in my life and everything I do guides my path, the path of “the people I touch”, and the path of the universe. The oneness of Source/The Absolute/All-That-Is makes all actions part of the infinite expansion of the universe. — My actions are Source/The Absolute/All-That-Is expressing through the vehicle of this body and mind. I can do no wrong because the small me does nothing. What comes through me is only the universal energy of love. Caring for myself is caring for the universe. Caring for others is caring for the universe. — Conversely, resisting myself, and resisting others, is resisting Source/The Absolute/All-That-Is. That is the source of suffering. But suffering is an illusion of the small me because everything known and done is an expression of All-That-Is. So suffering is also all about the small me and not the true me.
My life has nothing to do with me…
Deep inside, my smaller “me” knows that this is true. I wonder how my life might have been different if I had known and lived this from the beginning.
PART 2 — My Ego and “Me” (Jan 17, 2022)
(I added the following on January 17, 2022, based on a discussion I took part in on Facebook.)
My ego-self (or outer self) chooses nothing. It likes to think it makes choices, but that is just part of the veil to keep me in the illusion that I am my outer-ego self only.
My inner-self (or soul-self) is on the other side of the veil, hidden from my normal day-to-day view. It made all those choices in the past that created my current life circumstances. My outer-ego-self thought it made those choices, and it thinks it will make future choices.
As my consciousness expands, I become more of my inner-soul-self and am less dominated by my outer-ego-self. That is why I meditate — to quiet down my outer-ego-self and to give space for my inner-soul-self to manifest my life experience.
But, if I am not mindful, I easily slip back into being dominated by my outer-ego-self.
When spiritual teachers say “You are God”, they are trying to activate/enliven/awaken our inner-soul-self, and remind us we are our inner-soul-self first, and our outer-ego-self second. (See the first half of the video linked below as an example.)
When we awaken in that way, our outer-ego-self stops unnecessary judging. It knows it does not know everything and accepts that the inner-soul-self (God) knows what it is doing. In my experience, that is when the magic and synchronicity happens.
But that only happens when the outer-ego-self surrenders and stops trying to make things happen. We then become our inner-soul-self, which is where our true power lies. (See the second half of the video below for more on manifesting from our inner-soul-self.)
So, my life is not about my outer-ego-self. It is about my inner-soul-self that is one with everyone and everything in my universe.
PART 3 — “I” Do Not Exist, “I” Do Not Do Anything
(I added the following to this article on March 3, 2022. I based it on a question I received from a reader. It reflects my recent interest in Radical Nonduality/Neo-Advaita.)
My Current View of Reality
I consider what I call “my life” as the quantum energy of the universe coming together to form this body/mind of mine at this moment. (That is, of course, another story, but it works for me/my ego for now.)
My current understanding/belief/story is that the “quantum energy wave” of the universe underlies all manifest reality. It randomly creates forms (objects and experiences) in manifest reality. There is cause-effect, but it is only energy moving through waves of compression and expansion. (This relates to the suggestion in physics that entropy, or disorder, is the normal state of the universe.)
One of the forms that the universal energy creates is what we call the “ego”. The ego is the sense of separation and individuality.
The unmanifest (Source) is the undifferentiated and not separate “I”. It is the pure oneness of everything (the quantum energy wave) and it is the “no thing” beyond everything. It cannot be known from manifest reality.
The first manifestation of Source is the “I Am”, which is the ego (or at least my definition of the ego). “I Am” is the first story created from the random energy of the universe.
The ego creates order, stories, realities, and universes from the random energy patterns. It does that by focusing on some things and ignoring other things. In that way, the ego is the greatest creation of Source because from the ego everything else in manifest reality comes into being.
Consciousness is the awareness or witnessing of the stories and universes created by the ego. Consciousness is the bridge between the manifest reality and the unmanifest Source.
From the perspective of Source (the unmanifested), all manifest reality is a story (or a dream, or an illusion). Thus, my life has nothing to do with “me” because my life is a dream, and “I” am a temporary illusion. Who I think I am in this incarnation/life comes from the many stories that “my ego” has created to define its separate self.
Physical reality and my life are only real within the current story/dream. When I awaken from this dream, it will end, and it will be seen as the illusion/story that it is. But until then, it is very real.
My ego creates many other stories. I believe some, though not much as physical reality (like the multidimensionality of the universe), and other stories I do not believe in at all (like flat Earth theories).
And there is nothing wrong with any of that. It is just how the quantum energy wave creates forms in this dimension of reality and how one of those forms, my ego, picks and chooses to create stories from the other forms.
The larger, truer “me” (my pure consciousness) is simply the witnessing to all of this. I (the small “me”) can try, but it will never know the true Source of anything because it is beyond all knowing.
When I accept and allow that, I am allowing the energy of the universe to flow unconditionally, which is what humans call “love”.
My life is not about me, it is all just what is happening. And that is another story, of course.
NOTE: (*) The quote at the top of this article comes from a lecture by Neal Donald Walsch (on YouTube) in which he said this realization was the most important lesson he learned through channeling his Conversations with God book series.
