[1] Who’s Truth is True? (a story of masks)
I WEAR a facemask. A while back, I posted a news article on Facebook showing that the places in the world that were the quickest to adopt facemask requirements had the lowest cases of coronavirus infections.
As a geographer, I found this geographically interesting, and I believed it was an accurate correlation. (Although, of course, correlation does not equal causation.)
A friend responded to my post, saying that we attract illnesses (and other “negative” experiences) to us by focusing our attention on them. Giving our attention to them strengthens their spiritual energy and power over us. That was a Law of Attraction response, which is a popular New Age spiritual teaching.
The argument is that wearing a facemask is one way of focusing our attention on the virus and strengthening it. Thus, wearing a facemask is a sign that we are spiritually weak because we are not taking full personal responsibility to create health in our reality.
I also believe this is true — that “we create our own reality” in this way.
(Unfortunately, this person cited the deaths in the Americas from epidemics when Europeans first arrived as evidence of what can happen when we are not spiritually advanced enough to create our reality. About 56 million Native peoples in North and South America — 90% of the total pre-Columbian population — perished in the years after Columbus arrived in 1492. That is not a good example of the Law of Attraction.)
[1.1] God Consciousness or Spiritual Bypassing?
I could accuse my friend of “spiritual bypassing”, which is:
[A] tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks… — John Welwood, the psychologist who coined the term in 1984, based on his experiences with Buddhism
To me, spiritual bypassing happens when we see and argue only the soul-self (or higher-self oneness) perspective and ignore the ego-self (human diversity) experience. Here, I could say that my friend is bypassing (ignoring) the human reality of the pandemic by relying on spiritual teachings.

I also believe that we draw to us what we resist, which is part of the Law of Attraction.
If we were all in a state of full “God Consciousness” all the time, then we would fully and always know how we create our experiences in every moment. We would be complete, direct, and conscious participants in creating our universe. And nothing that we do not want would exist for us.
We are fully aware of our divine, absolute soul and our separate human experience in that state of consciousness. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (of Transcendental Meditation fame) called the living 200% of life — 100% outer/material life and 100% inner/spiritual life. For more on that, see:
But very few of us are in God Consciousness, which is also called awakening, self-realization, and enlightenment (see article linked below). We are mostly in a very limited human state of consciousness.
From our human experience, we see God Consciousness as a state in which we fully manifest our every desire. It is like Heaven on Earth. And it is something that we all aspire to, whether we are aware of it.
If a man whose entire inner world is composed of contradictions were suddenly to feel all these contradictions simultaneously within himself, if he were to feel all at once that he loves everything he hates and hates everything he loves; that he lies when he tells the truth and that he tells the truth when he lies; and if he could feel the shame and horror of it all, this would be the state which is called ‘conscience’.
A man cannot live in this state; he must either destroy contradictions or destroy conscience. He cannot destroy conscience, but if he cannot destroy it, he can put it to sleep, that is, he can separate by impenetrable barriers one feeling of self from another, never see them together, never feel their incompatibility, the absurdity of one existing alongside another.
— from In Search of the Miraculous, (1949), by P.D. Ouspensky, quoting G.I. Gurdjieff. (source)
[1.2] Two Conflicting Truths
So, while I wear a mask, I also believe that my friend is right about us having the potential to create a personal reality free from any illness of any kind. But believing and doing that are two different things.
I heard from a couple of spiritual teachers that there are only 5 to 10 fully enlightened people on the planet at any time. And I do not believe anyone is in that state all the time.
Not even the Buddha or Jesus had 100% control over the entire universe they experienced all the time. (Buddha had health problems as he aged, and they murdered Jesus on the cross, for example.) I believe such a level of creative power is not possible for any being who has a human body (although I am sure others will disagree with me).
For more on degrees of enlightenment, see:
We are both an “infinite, eternal soul” and a “finite, human mind-body-ego”. A couple of other ways we can think of this paradox are:
- We create our reality (such as our health) — and — We do not create our reality (we live in a matrix that pre-determines our experiences)
- Our Earth experience is an illusion — and — Our Earth experience is real
From a Law of Attraction perspective, most of us alive on the planet today are about 10 to 20% soul and 80 to 90% mind-body-ego. A rare few are 90% infinite being and 10% finite being.
I like to think that I am maybe 30% eternal and 70% human. I base that on my meditation and other practices, constant curiosity about spirituality, and many writings on Medium. I (my ego) am probably putting my eternal soul level far higher than it is.
But, If I am 30%-70%, that means I have only a 30% chance of creating my reality from my soul-level beingness. So, my chance of catching a virus-related illness is moderately high — over 50% if I do not take precautions. I don’t mind playing it safe.
Perhaps my friend is more at the 80% infinite, eternal soul level. Then, from a spiritual perspective, I agree that my friend most likely does not need to wear a mask.
For yourself, what would you guess is your “Soul-Self %” versus your “Mind-Body-Ego-Self %” ?

[1.3] How Can Opposites be True?
The example above is common. Our existence is a paradox, and it constantly presented us with opposite truths. This is not about what you believe. Because whatever you believe, there will be an opposite belief held by someone.
Can one truth be true and the other false? That is the normal reaction for most people from their 3D ego experience. We have beliefs that differ from others. But we increase our ego separation whenever we feel our truth is more true than another. That is the opposite of oneness.
Can both truths be true? That is hard for most people to accept. That is because our personality and beliefs naturally draw us more to one than the other. We are moving toward oneness when we accept that opposite truths can be true.
Can both truths be false? There could be a third truth that we believe better than the others. That is a common position, but is still ego separation. If we feel all truths are false, and that no truth is true, that could be depression or an existential crisis. But it could also be a Radical Nondualism view (truth, along with all reality, is an illusion), or maybe it is a spiritual knowing of Source / God / The Absolute.

Our truths vary based on:
- Our state of consciousness (or density, or spiritual dimension) — We see a universe that is more open, flexible, loving, responsive when we are in a higher (or broader) state of consciousness.
- Our beliefs about reality — We create our reality, which we can think of on a purely psychological level, or a deeper spiritual reality level; they both work.
We each hold multiple truths and shift among them as our consciousness and beliefs shift.
At an individual level, a truth is the same as a belief. Anything that we believe is real is true for us. (We call this ontology in philosophy. It asks: “how do we know what is real?”) We typically can find evidence in our universe that what we believe is real is also true.
We will ignore or deny evidence that contradicts our belief/truth. (Psychology calls this confirmational bias.) We may do that consciously and intentionally, such as in politics or when watching sports. Or we may do that unconsciously, due to lack of knowledge and awareness.
If we do not believe something is real, then it is not a truth for us. (I sometimes wonder how “real” politics is.)
The physical sciences are about as real as anything can get in our physical world. But, even in science, nothing is ever an absolute truth. Science is based on experience (empirical evidence), not absolute truth. (An “absolute truth” is something unquestioned from any perspectives.)
Experience (or experiments) needs to show a statistical probability that something is not true. “Not true” means the relationship between two things is random. Science believes the relationship is true when there is a low probability of it being random. But the probability of randomness (called the null hypothesis) is never zero (0).
The social sciences need to show a 5% or less probability an idea/correlation is random (not true). The physical and medical sciences usually need to show a 1% probability that an observation/relationship is random. While low, there is still a chance/probability that the result was random (not true).
And scientific truths change. That is often a slow, generational change, as younger scientists with newer ideas replace older scientists whose beliefs become too rigid. But it can also be a paradigm shift that changes all our beliefs about reality — until the next paradigm shift comes along.
Thus, perhaps an absolute truth in science is that “No Truth is True”. There are only some truths that we have higher probabilities of encountering (which we might even call a “law”) and others that we have lower probabilities of experiencing (which we usually call a “theory”).
I suggested above that No Truth Is True could be a deep knowing of Source/God/The Absolute. That is because Source is unmanifested. It is what there was before any manifest or phenomenal reality existed. It contains all realities, and it is beyond all realities.
Thus, it is beyond all truths. Any description of Source will always fall short of whatever it is. All truths or beliefs about Source will always be less than what it is. For Source, no 3D human truth is true.

[2] “ALL Truths Are True”
THE HARDEST concept to accept is the idea that “All Truths are True”. Almost no one who is not a New Age spiritualist believes this is an absolute truth. (Everyone I have asked, so far, has rejected this statement.)
Even most New Age spiritualists have a hard time with this idea. Their chief argument is that some acts are so heinous and evil that they could never be part of love and oneness.
That argument shows how difficult it is to grasp higher perspectives from a 3rd Dimensional (3D) material world consciousness. In that consciousness, each thing in existence is separate. We navigate that separation with our 3D reality using our ego. Our ego does that by judging and separating good/bad, right/wrong, and better/worse.
The ego’s goal is to always move toward good, right, and better decisions. But that means rejecting what we see as bad, wrong, and worse. Thus, it is impossible for the ego-self to see All Truths as True. One is always better than another when compared side-by-side.
That is how the ego creates separation, which can lead to negative feelings, such as loneliness, rejection, and fear. It is the opposite of feelings of oneness, connection, and unconditional love with others and our universe. This is also why many New Age spiritual teachings see the “ego” as humanity’s primary problem.
Oneness and unconditional love mean embracing all the positive and all the negative. We can leave nothing out because All-That-Is/Source/God contains and is everything. We do not have to “like” everything that we encounter. Different personalities have different likes and dislikes. But unconditional love exists for everything. For more on that, see:
A related argument is that we incarnated here on this 3D planet to experience 3D separation to its fullest. Our ego is the perfect tool for doing this, and because of that, it may be the ultimate creation of God/Source. We should not be fighting against our ego, but relishing in all the diversity it delivers to us.
On finding a balance between the ego-self and soul-self, see:
[2.1] 3 Necessary Propositions/Beliefs
From a more spiritual perspective, the truth that the “all truths are true” logically flows from the belief that…
[2.1.1] Everything in existence connects to everything else in an underlying oneness beyond the diversity of separate forms.
This is the truth of the oneness of Source/God/The Absolute/Brahman that created, connects, and is in all existence. We mostly “know” this exists because so many people have described this experience, known as Unity Consciousness. For most, it is a fleeting experience because, in its full expression, it is too intense for anyone to experience it all the time.
We often compare reality to an ocean. The choppy waves are like the diversity of forms in manifest creation. The calm water at the bottom of the ocean is the underlying oneness of all.
Another metaphor is that of a tree. The diversity is in the many leaves and flowers, while the trunk is the oneness.
Most New Age spiritualists agree with these analogies, which have some support from the Unified Field Theory of quantum physics. For more on that perspective, see:
Two other New Age spiritual truths are also important…
[2.1.2] We create our reality with our beliefs and expectations.
That is the basis of The Law of Attraction, mentioned above. That law says we manifest what our beliefs focus on. A variation of that is The Law of Mirroring. It says that the universe we experience mirrors our internal beliefs and expectations.
This is best understood if we consider that each of experiences our reality (universe) from a unique perspective. How we interpret those experiences is often pointed to as the basis of how we create our world/reality.
No one else will ever sense, respond, and create the world in the exact same way as each of use does. Some might be very close to one another, and we all influence one another, but no two beings are fully the same.
As Seth puts it…
“No one … can have the experiences that you can have with your own consciousness. No one can learn to manipulate physical reality in the way that you can or understand the nature of their own consciousness in the way that you can. You have a unique experience ahead of you that is yours and can exist for no other consciousness in the universe.
This is your gift. And, this is your responsibility, for if you let it fall by the wayside, no one can pick it up for you and it can never be replaced. No one can ever have it for you. The visions of reality that are your own can be seen by no other. The journey into consciousness and reality that can be perceived by you can be perceived by no other. The particular vision of truth that can be received by you can be perceived by no other.
There is no mass truth. There is only individually recognized and acknowledged and experienced truth.” — Seth/Jane Roberts, The Early Class Sessions, Book 3, March 23, 1971
[2.1.3] We live in a universe that is infinite and multidimensional.
Our 3D science cannot prove if the universe is infinite or not because they do not have the tools to test that idea. Multidimensionality is a concept in quantum physics that works in theory, but again, we cannot currently prove. (See the Waves, Energy & Vibration article linked above for more on that.)
The infinite universe is one, and it holds all the different realities that each of us is creating.
So…
— If you accept all 3 of these beliefs as absolute truths, then you probably already accept that “All Truths are True”.
— If you reject all 3 of these beliefs/truths, then the rest of my argument will not convince you of anything. (I am also surprised you got this far in this article!)
— If you accept just 1 of these 3 beliefs/truths, then there is hope that you might eventually accept the other 2 and that “All Truths are True”.
Based on accepting these 3 beliefs, the basic idea is:
Because we live in an infinite and multidimensional universe (#3), where everything connects and relates to everything else (#1), then every idea or truth that we imagine is created in a reality somewhere (#2).
It may be in our present reality. Or it may be in another reality, dimension, or universe. (This comes from the teachings of Seth/Jane Roberts, but it is also one theory of how a multiverse might work.)
“The possibilities that have come to reality within this universal system have each given birth to other systems and other realities, as one tree bears a thousand seeds… You yourselves, through your own mental actions, create realities of which you yourselves are unaware, and you give birth to more than physical children.” — Seth/Jane Roberts, The Early Sessions, Book 9, Session 453 December 4, 1968
[2.2] The Opposite of Every Truth is also True
We create realities in an infinite universe. So, there are infinite versions of every belief/truth we can imagine. There are infinite versions of Earth, for example. Why not? There are no boundaries in an infinite universe.
But we also create the opposite of what we imagine or believe because when we imagine one, we automatically imagine its opposite (#1, #2, & #3).
We need the opposite to know what we created. We need darkness to know light, and silence to know sound. They are two sides of the same coin, the same phenomenon, and the same universal oneness. We may only see one side from our limited 3D perspective, but the other side exists in some form and some place.
That means there is no single absolute belief or truth. The opposite of every truth that I believe is equally true and valid, somewhere in the universe.
Sometimes the opposite is standing right in front of us at the grocery store. Other times, it is on a planet on the opposite side of the galaxy.
Most of us have limited ability to know we create everything in our 3D incarnation. Some say our 3D ego cannot create anything except separation. Only our higher dimensional selves (such as our soul-self or higher self) create.
Others say we can create realities in 3D, but they are fleeting unless we act from our deeper soul-self. That requires an expanded or higher state of consciousness. For more on manifesting, see:
Most spiritualists agree that higher states of consciousness embrace both darkness and light. In many traditions, the darkness came first, and then there was light.
As long as we reject the dark, we create separation and strengthen our presence in 3D reality. When we can thank the darkness for its fundamental role in creating reality, then we can move into 4D. When we can fully embrace the darkness in unconditional love, then we are in 5D. And, of course,…
[2.3] Individual & Shared Truths
It is easy for me to understand how others believe the opposite of my belief because of different backgrounds and circumstances. I see this most clearly in politics, where everyone seems split between left-wing and right-wing political parties with apparently opposite agendas.
But we can extend this beyond group beliefs about what is true and not. Each person has their beliefs and truths. Our truths overlap with others in the portions of our reality that we share with others. But there is much that we do not share, which is our unique way of seeing our universe.
So, we are each a unique wave of energy moving through the universe. At our deepest levels (Universal Soul level), we connect to every other wave (person or thing) in existence. But at the level of our outer-self (ego), we are unique and one of a kind.
We express different truths at those different levels. At our soul-level, all truths are true. At our ego-level, our truth is more true than others. We express our ego-level truth through our physical form (body, mind, emotions, and ego).
(We also call this as our “signature wave”, which I describe in the article linked above, Waves, Energy, & Vibration — A Spiritual “Theory of Everything” in The World.)
We exist in a shared reality in which we share certain beliefs and truths about how the universe works. If any of those beliefs change, then our shared universe will change. We will move to a parallel universe where beings share our new truths. (And we would probably not even remember our old truths.)
I can imagine parallel Earths with many configurations of life and beliefs. For example, the Bizarro Earth in the Superman comics could be (and probably is) a reality somewhere in the universe.
We create our reality. The life, world, and universe we experience are what we currently believe is true. For most of us, this world is very complex. Well, that is how complex your truths are.

[2.4] The Universe Within You
That the world you experience reflects your beliefs/truths leads to another New Age spiritualist belief:
You do not exist in your universe. Your universe exists within you.
We experience everything in physical reality in our mind from input received through our physical and subtle senses. Without that sensory input, we would experience nothing in our physical reality. (We might still experience things in nonphysical, spiritual realms.)
I have heard different channeled entities say that we could not hear or understand the message they were delivering if that message (truth) did not exist within us. And some say it is better to think of our eyes as projecting reality outward, rather than taking it into our brain.
Seth, for example, says our feelings come first, and the external “cause” that we blame for our feelings come second:
“Even those of you who intellectually agree that you form your own reality find it difficult to accept emotionally in certain areas. You are, of course, literally hypnotized into believing that your feelings arise in response to events. Your feelings, however, CAUSE the events you perceive. Secondarily, you do of course then react to those events. …In those areas of life where you are satisfied, give yourself credit, and in those areas where you are not, remind yourself that you are involved in a learning process; you are daring enough to accept responsibility for your actions.” — Seth/Jane Roberts, The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events, chapter 5: Session 830, March 27, 1978.
As I noted above, it is easy for me to understand why political opposites exist. But it is much harder for me to visualize how all those opposite truths mirror opposite truths within me.
I have my personal moral beliefs about right and wrong. But knowing that I am also creating the wrongs I see is harder to understand. My ego-self resists this, although it logically knows the soul-self’s truth of oneness, as discussed in [3.2] above and [3.5] below.
