Sparks №9: Count your Buttons

Weekly writing newsletter from Flint & Steel

Photo by Ekaterina Grosheva on Unsplash

Did you know October 21st is Count Your Buttons day? Yeah, me neither.

I appreciate the role of buttons in our lives, but what came to mind was my mother. My mother would not touch or hold a loose button (she was fine if they were on a garment).

I found out about her fear one day when I asked her to sew a button on something and she wouldn’t hold the button. She and I liked to joke around, so I laughed in response. “Are you serious?!” I thought she was making it up. She didn’t know why she felt that way, but she did. And I learned how to sew on buttons myself.

So my question for you is do you have an unusual fear or phobia? When did you notice it or is it a result of a specific event in your life?

Also, I want to invite everyone to a Twitter Social Hour that will be held every Wednesday over in Twitter land.

Your Articles

Keep the submissions coming! I especially loved those about the movies that scared (or didn’t) you as a child (remember my prompts have no deadlines).

Take some time to check out the articles from fellow F&S writers and share the love!

Ronald C. Flores-Gunkle shared his stunning writing space and home (and the equally beautiful story behind it) in “A Room and a History,” in response to the “Where do you write? prompt.

L Burton shared what movie scared her the most as a child in “Scary Movies.” And I must agree I felt the same about that movie!

Dennett shared her response to the Scary Movie prompt in “Head-Under-The-Covers Scared.”

Pierce McIntyre shared his response to the Scary Movie prompt with “Get Away From Me Oompa-Loompas and Bubble Gum Girl!

Ellie Jacobson shared her response as well with “Bring it on Johnny But Please Do Not Harm Bambi’s Mama”

pockett dessert wrote “Let’s Eat, Happy Hour and New Friends”, in response to the gift writing prompt. I’m so ready to go on our van trip!

Kaori Mitsui responded to Dennett’s orange prompt with “What are the Awe-Foods in October?”

and “These Steps may Solve Creating and Writing Worries.”

Elin Melaas wrote in response to the reader journey freewriting prompt, “The Joy of Reading.”

Diana Lotti shared her most inspiring writing space, “An Office Puzzle.”

Penny Grubb tied a few prompts into one post (love that!) with “Places, Myths, Rituals & Links.”

Mulan shared a charming early memory with “I Made a Silly Deal When I was Three-Years-Old.”

Around Medium: Calls for Submissions, Writing Prompts, and Challenges

Check out last week’s newsletter for more October writing prompts and challenges.

Tips

As always, review each publication’s guidelines for their prompts. Many prompts do not have a set deadline.

Make sure when you are responding to a prompt, you credit where your inspiration came from, like a link to the prompt article.

Many of these prompts could fall under nonfiction, poetry and fiction so don’t limit yourself. There is no right or wrong. Use these prompts as a springboard to your writing.

Quy Ma, with About Me Stories, is welcoming more stories about you, like memoirs, relationships, life lessons, self love and mental health. I love this Quy!

Diana C., with Know Thyself, Heal Thyself, shared week three of spooktober prompts. Remember there is no deadline for these prompts!

Creator’s Hub posted week 17 of their writing prompts: remember a stranger, “dear jerk,” and get spooky!

Ravyne Hawke, with Promptly Written, shared the daily poetry and fiction prompts.

Sarah Minnis shared a writing challenge that I need to do, write a story for every publication you are a writer for in, “A Mini Writing Challenge.”

Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她), with The Brain is a Noodle, wants you to share about a food that appears in spherical or round shape.

Trista Signe Ainsworth, with Thank You Notes, wants you to share an essay, article, or poem about rest. How do you rest? Where do you like to rest? How often do you allow yourself to rest?
