3 Sneaky Ways You Sabotage Yourself

Your perfectionism gets in the way of your success.

made with Canva. made with Love.

When you invest in beliefs that make you successful, your life soars.

Yet, first you need to identify which habits hinder your growth.

Usually, we become our worst enemies with thoughts and assumptions we are quick to make.

When you become aware of limiting beliefs, you get to overcome limiting thinking.

I present to you the three most common habits that sabotage your success.

Getting stuck in the old identity.

Your reality is subjected to the mental picture you hold about yourself and the world. Your self-image runs your life.

To change how you think about your achievements and your capabilities, become aware of the old story you repeat. Do you doubt your attempts, or are you your biggest cheerleader? Which attitude runs through your mind 90% of the time?

The old identity feels familiar. And comfort zone breeds procrastination.

You won’t start a side hustle because you have addicted your brain to think in patterns of a 9–5 job. How you perceive your current situation is your mental ceiling.

You won’t respect your boundaries because feeling hurt or alone is way more familiar to your brain than being vulnerable and appreciated.

When you want to change your life, you have to think, feel and act differently.

When you create more content for your blog, your audience grows. When you read more books, you become more knowledgeable. When you eat nourishing food, your health thrives.

For example, you want to be a full-time writer. What are your habits when you are one? You have a consistent writing schedule. You carve out space and quiet to focus on your work. You support other writers. You introduce yourself as a writer.

Who do you want to be?

When you think like a successful person, you become it. When you think like a healthy person, you become it. You commit to new habits. You commit to new thinking.

Over time, your unconscious mind accepts this as the “new normal”. You’ll start thinking bigger thoughts and taking actions in line with the “new you”.

When you change the story you tell yourself, you change the story of your life. Any external change begins in your internal world.

Your identity is not fixed. Your brain is a malleable organ.

Break the pattern: During the day, stop and ask yourself: Is it the reaction of an “old me”, or is it a story a “new me” would like to continue?

When you become aware of where you want to go, you align your thinking and acting with your goals. Instead of perpetuating old habits and behaviour, you create a new experience.

This brings me to:

Negative self-talk.

How do you start your day? Is it gratitude? Is it enumerating possibilities stretched out in front of you? Or is it a dreadful thought of getting up and despising what you do for a living?

Your internal chatter sabotages your success. But you can start a new chatter that will push you towards greatness.

You have trained your brain to think in patterns. You can break that habit with self-discipline and constructive thoughts.

Faith in your abilities is the number one component in achieving your goals.

Even if the whole world doesn’t believe you can win, there is only one opinion that counts and makes success happen. Yours alone.

When you believe in yourself, there is no mountain you cannot climb. It may take you longer than others. You can find a different path. Nevertheless, you will achieve what you put your mind to.

If you decide to write every day and believe in your commitment, you will write and people will read.

If you decide to eat less sugar and mindfully pick your food, you will feel better.

If you wake up every morning with a smile and a grateful heart for yet another day you get to be alive, you will have a successful 24 hours full of growth and joy. Gratitude attracts wealth.

Self-talk is power. Your life is as good as your perception of it.

The more you repeat affirmations of positivity and trust, the more your mind programs your actions towards success.

Change your self-talk and you will change your life.

Perfectionism.

Do you know perfectionism can be paralysing?

Until you wait for the perfect timing, that perfect moment, you will never start.

Perfectionism means there is no room for improvement.

Fear of failure drives perfectionism. The schooling system does not teach you how to embrace failure. It promotes the fear of it.

When you were a kid, you thrived on failure. When you fell, you got up and took the next steps. This is how you learnt to walk.

Yet, later in life, you were taught to become embarrassed by defeat. The result? Many people don’t even start on their visions as they are too afraid to stumble. It is a conditional way of living. Conditions mean limits.

Rejection can always be the greatest redirection. Mistakes bring wisdom. Failures bring you closer to your ultimate goals. Failure is a natural part of learning, growing, and moving forward.

If you are fixed on making the best decision possible, it can leave you paralysed and stuck in the waiting mode. Once you step into the habit of perfectionism, nothing is ever good enough.

Break the habit: Give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn as you go. Chase the rejection. Try new things. Experimenting gives your life an exciting flavour.

As long as you hold yourself back in life, you won’t even attempt to fail or succeed. And that is the worst failure of all.

Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.
