What Do You See When You Look In The Mirror?
The power of self-image.

How do you start your day?
Do you drag yourself to the bathroom and avoid looking in the mirror? Or do you smile at the reflection and give yourself a high-five to kick-start the day?
Your life is as good as your perception of it.
Self-image or self-concept is what you feel and believe about yourself on a subconscious level.
Good self-image means happiness and success. How you see yourself determines:
- your relationship with money; financial success starts in the mind
- your actions and determination
- your relationship with people; how you allow others to treat you,
- the quality of your life
The Mountain State Centers for Independent Living explains:
“Self-image is how you perceive yourself. It is a number of self-impressions that have built up over time… These self-images can be very positive, giving a person confidence in their thoughts and actions, or negative, making a person doubtful of their capabilities and ideas.”
Self-image runs your life. It is the number one thing that paves your road to accomplishing your goals. When you believe you suck at maths, you will sabotage any chances of improvement. When you believe you can become better every day, you are right.
A positive self-concept drives your determination, enables you to spot opportunities and makes you confident.
A negative self-concept sabotages your efforts, blocks your motivation, and makes it hard to believe in yourself.
When you have a positive self-image, you:
- see yourself as an attractive person,
- think of yourself as smart and reliable,
- are satisfied with your life
- believe success is natural for you
You still have things you may not particularly like about yourself, but instead of struggling, you accept them.
Your self-image can keep you stuck, but if changed, it can make you thrive.
You have built your self-image through experience; what you were told as a child, assumptions you have made, how peers treated you in the playground and how you approached them. Experiences influenced your perception.
But you can also change your self-perception through new experiences and how you look at them.
The mind acts on the data you feed it.
You can change your self-image through the power of your imagination.
If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.
— William Arthur Ward
When you worry, you feel worse. Eventually, you get sick and the worst-case scenario becomes true. That is the power of your imagination.
Since you can make bad things happen, you can also create some good in this world.
When you visualize success, you raise your confidence. You expect success. You normalize it. You no longer see it as a big deal but an obvious component of your life. Getting what you want is easy.
Apply the same to your self-talk.
Your daily habits make or break you. Self-concept is the sum of your daily habits, thoughts, and words you whisper in your mind.
Smile when you greet your reflection in the mirror.
Compliment yourself on a job well done.
When you have a goal, make sure that your self-concept is aligned with beliefs that support your goals.
Chant to yourself throughout the day:
- I can do this,
- I have got this,
- I am destined for success,
- I am born to win.
A simple act of looking yourself in the eye and saying ‘You can do this’ is powerful.
Short phrases suffice. The subconscious always listens. It does not distinguish between a joke and a threat. It responds to your emotions.
How you feel in the moment of repeating powerful affirmations is how your body responds. When you believe in yourself, whatever you do will become a success.
Affirmations have changed my life and I will never doubt it again.
Gratitude is a powerful tool to improve your self-concept.
The habit of gratitude wipes out the comparison from your life. Instead of chasing to become more, you discover you are enough just the way you are.
The ability to spot abundance in your reality makes you a better person.
When you discover things you can thank for, you tap into joy, dropping the negative thoughts that lower self-concept out of your mind. You gain a healthy and constructive perspective.
Meditation is another wonderful mode to improve your self-image.
Meditation helps you tune into who you are by muting the chaos of expectations: what you should do, what you could have done. It anchors you in the present moment.
People who meditate appear to be more aware of their unconscious minds. The subconscious mind manages your decision-making process. It stores all memories, habits, and skills.
Meditation helps you access the subconscious by lowering brain waves and changing stored information, thus altering your reactions to the world.

Start liking yourself.
Having a good self-image means thinking highly of yourself.
These little acts of self-love will boost your game of self-care.
Nobody can make you feel worse without your consent. And where does your consent come from? Self-awareness.
- Observe your self-talk.
- Observe what you think about when doing the dishes, preparing the food, brushing your teeth, and falling asleep.
- Focus on how good you have already and what an amazing person you already are.
Observe your thoughts, instead of being constantly the victim of your thoughts.
— Tim Ferris
When you change your self-image, your income changes, your relationships change, and your health improves.
So what do you see when you look in the mirror?
I see potential.
There is potential in every one of us. If you doubt yourself, it is only because your ability to perceive greatness has been blurred by limiting beliefs.
