Abstract

nse-system-for-survival-longevity-651819e777d1">the defense system<b></b></a><b> </b>to fight against internal and external intruders. It is located in the upper chest between the lungs and above the heart.</p><p id="1077">As an immunity construct, its primary function is to develop unique white blood cells moving from<b> </b>bone marrow to the thymus gland. When white blood cells (the lymphocytes) evolve, they are called T-cells to protect the body from intruders.</p><p id="2e3a">As part of the endocrine system, the thymus gland produces hormones such as thymopoietin, thymosin, thymulin, and the thymic humoral factor. The thymus gland communicates with the pituitary gland to release the necessary hormones for immunity.</p><p id="2c38">The <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6608930/">thymus gland disorders</a> include thymus cancer,<b> </b>DiGeorge syndrome, autoimmune conditions (such as pure red cell aplasia and myasthenia gravis), hypogammaglobulinemia, and m<a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/13792-mediastinal-tumor">ediastinal masses</a>.</p><p id="4333">You can learn more about thymus gland disorders in the Mayo Clinic Connect via <a href="https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/chest-surgery/newsfeed-post/disease-of-the-thymus-gland/">a video</a> presented by Dr. Stephen D. Cassivi (MD).</p><h1 id="e1b4">6 — Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands</h1><p id="3042">The thyroid and parathyroid glands are situated in front of the neck. The thyroid gland, a vascular organ, consists of two lobes on each side of the trachea, just below the larynx (voice box). The two lobes are connected by a band of tissue (the isthmus).</p><p id="31dc">The thyroid gland produces two hormones, thyroxine, and triiodothyronine, regulated by the hypothalamus.</p><p id="e6eb">These hormones use iodine to synthesize. Therefore, iodine deficiency can affect thyroid function. And, of course, too much iodine is toxic to the body. We need this molecule in adequate amounts for thyroid balance.</p><p id="92ec">Anatomically parathyroid glands are four small masses of epithelial tissue embedded in the connective tissue capsule on the thyroid glands' posterior (back) surface. So these two glands are connected.</p><p id="24d9">The parathyroid glands secrete the parathyroid hormone, also known as the parathormone in the literature. This hormone regulates blood calcium levels.</p><p id="f91f">It stimulates the release of calcium by bones into the bloodstream, impacts the absorption of calcium from food by the intestines, and assists the conservation of calcium by the kidneys regulating vitamin D levels. As I pointed out in <a href="https://readmedium.com/vitamin-d-as-a-steroid-hormone-not-just-another-supplement-495a2f55c984">a previous article</a>, Vitamin D is also a hormone.</p><p id="7c34">When the blood calcium levels get low, this hormone is triggered and can increase the levels. Insufficient secretion of the parathyroid hormone, also known as hypoparathyroidism, can excite nerves and stimulate muscles. So, the condition can lead to nerve and muscle problems.</p><p id="3d99">You can learn more about thyroid and parathyroid conditions from <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35235284/">this paper</a> and <a href="https://www.brighamandwomens.org/surgery/surgical-oncology/endocrine/thyroid-and-parathyroid-conditions#:~:text=Typical%20thyroid%20conditions%20are%3A%20multinodular,%2C%20hyperparathyroidism%2C%20and%20parathyroid%20tumors.">the educative resource </a>from Brigham and Women’s Hospital.</p><h1 id="6091">7 — Ovaries, Testes, and Prostate Gland</h1><p id="f151">These glands are comprehensive and thoroughly different between males and females. I will summarize them to create awareness as they are associated with some health conditions.</p><p id="6c82">These glands (ovaries and testes) produce sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone for women and testosterone for men. These hormones regulate the reproductive system and sexual characteristics. The prostate’s primary function is to produce the fluid that transports sperm.</p><p id="bc37">Women’s ovaries are located on both sides of the uterus. Men’s testes are located in a pouch that hangs suspended outside. The ovaries produce and store a woman’s eggs. When women experience menopause, ovaries stop making hormones and releasing eggs.</p><p id="d44f">The prostate gland in men is located near the bladder and produces a fluid that makes up a part of semen. For prostate and testicular health affecting 30 million people, you might obtain more guiding information from <a href="https://lluh.org/services/mens-health/prostate-testicular-health">Loma Linda University Health</a>.</p><p id="4f1e">Female glands are associated with various disorders, such as ovarian cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome, and ovarian torsion. You can obtain <a href="https://effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/health-topics/ovarian-disorders">more information</a> about these disorders from the Department of Health and Human Services.</p><h1 id="91f8">Conclusions and Takeaways</h1><p id="dafe">As I highlighted in my previous articles, these endocrine glands, like <a href="https://readmedium.com/how-to-improve-the-health-of-7-major-organs-and-lower-disease-risks-3cd4a8d2f281">organs,</a> depend on hormonal balance. Therefore, a viable way to lower the risks of disorders associated with glands is to maintain hormonal balance.</p><p id="7e36">Even though hormonal imbalance has a genetic component for some people, many of us can balance our hormones via healthy lifestyle choices.</p><p id="739f">The critical point is to focus on fundamentals such as restorative sleep, quality nutrition, regular exercise, rest, recovery, fun, and other effective stress management strategies like mindfulness and meditation.</p><p id="fb25">Despite your healthy lifestyle habits, if you face hormonal imbalance and notice symptoms, you must seek timely support from qualified healthcare professionals. They can diagnose and treat your conditions timely and allow you to re-balance your hormones.</p><p id="4833">As glands are comprehensive and cover various systems addressing related conditions might require several specialists covering the endocrine, immune, blood, and nervous systems.</p><p id="63e3">Endocrine glands might also create psychological situations; therefore, seeking from mental health professionals might also be necessary.</p><p id="10ba">Balancing our hormones, neurotransmitters, and other biochemicals via healthy lifestyle choices is crucial as they play a critical role in our health and well-being.</p><p id="60e7">I introduced the <a href="https://readmedium.com/losing-fat-by-understanding-the-intricacies-of-six-major-hormones-73691ced5ae">intricacies of hormones</a> in various articles before. I also wrote about various neurotransmitters such as <a href="https://readmedium.com/the-role-of-dopamine-in-the-brain-and-how-to-optimize-it-naturally-574a76d674ee">dopamine</a>, <a href="https://readmedium.com/the-vital-role-of-serotonin-for-health-and-how-to-optimize-it-naturally-ea3426b90de8">serotonin</a>, <a href="https://readmedium.com/oxytocin-heres-how-you-can-bond-love-more-and-create-meaningful-relationships-583b52172cac">oxytocin</a>, <a href="https://readmedium.com/fe30abbd10ca">GABA</a>, <a href="https://readmedium.com/optimize-your-acetylcholine-to-boost-memory-accelerate-learning-and-move-better-e287fed0d9b2">acetylcholine</a>, <a href="https://readmedium.com/heres-how-to-optimize-your-norepinephrine-levels-for-better-physical-and-mental-health-8a9f02be96cc">norepinephrine</a>, <a href="https://readmedium.com/optimize-your-epinephrine-adrenaline-for-health-productivity-and-joy-via-healthy-lifestyle-2480123799aa">adrenalin</a>, and <a href="https://readmedium.com/histamine-the-many-hats-of-a-paradoxical-biochemical-for-the-body-and-mind-bab84b57b806">histamine</a>.</p><p id="af2b">Learning about your glands and understanding associated disorders can contribute to mitigating risks with timely support.</p><p id="be28">I plan to unfold each gland in a different article by delving into details and providing more helpful information.</p><p id="cc95">Therefore your feedback on this article can provide valuable input for my research and content planning. If you are experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalances, such as unexpected weight gain or mood disorders, your endocrine glands might need attention. These glands are like the key members of an orchestra.

I previously provided an overview of seven significant organs. Some readers showed interest in understanding glands which also play a critical role in our health and well-being. As these anatomical structures are of great interest to me, I decided to provide a high-level overview.

The human body has numerous glands with various hormonal functions, impacting various systems. At the highest level, they are categorized as endocrine and exocrine glands. My focus is on endocrine glands affecting the stress response and making hormonal changes for physical and mental health.

My goal is to give a complete picture of endocrine glands at a high level. Covering these comprehensive glands in detail is impossible as they require voluminous books.

They already exist in the body of knowledge. But they are fragmented. My goal is to defragment them in a concise article so you can understand functions, impacts, and implications on the body and mind.

I started learning about glands during an anatomy class in graduate school three decades ago. I compiled a comprehensive literature review covering the functions of all glands in the human body during that time.

When I recently compared my annotated bibliography on glands to my journal entries scripted after that, I noticed a significant knowledge gap.

Scientific studies are constantly advancing with technological breakthroughs. What we learned last year is different from this year. Therefore, I updated my resources to provide current information.

The research on glands is active and proliferating, adding more clarity and new solutions to related disorders. If you check the National Library of Medicine, you will see over half a million medical reports on glands. Even the most senior scientists cannot review these many artifacts in their lifetime.

I wrote this article for busy yet curious people who want to gain essential information distilled and articulated by someone who understands the topic. Understanding the topic does not mean being an expert.

When you finish reading this article, you might understand the role of your glands, gain an awareness of associated disorders, and learn how to obtain more information about taking care of them and seeking help when required.

Readers interested in scientific and technical details might check links to credible sources to further explore these glands' functions, health impacts, and implications. So, this is not a scientific or technical paper.

What is a gland?

A gland is an anatomical structure that can produce and secrete biochemicals, such as hormones, neurotransmitters, enzymes, or other chemicals, into the bloodstream or other body parts, such as its surface.

These biochemicals produced and secreted by glands are critical for survival and well-being. Glands are different from organs due to their structure and functions. However, they are interrelated in the body.

Glands are typically classified under two categories: endocrine and exocrine. In short, endocrine means hormones. Exocrine refers to glands that secrete their biochemicals outside the cells that produce them.

This classification is helpful for my article because my goal is to focus on the endocrine glands that affect our physical and mental health covering significant disorders.

This article by John Hopkins Hospital categorizes endocrine glands under 12 items. I cover combining some of them in the following sections focusing on hormones and neurotransmitters, which is the central theme of my post.

I introduce endocrine glands and associated disorders in the following sections. I plan to create a separate article about exocrine glands to keep this article in a reasonable size.

Examples of exocrine glands are sweat, salivary, gastric, and pancreatic. As names suggest, they include biochemicals such as saliva, sweat, stomach acid, and digestive enzymes.

An Overview of 7 Endoctrin Glands

1 — Hypothalamus

I start with the hypothalamus because it is the master switchboard of the endocrine system. Those readers who read my previous stories might say, “hang on, didn’t you say the hypothalamus was a brain region before?”

Yes, the hypothalamus is a critical brain region regulating body temperature, hunger, thirst, and more. However, it also possesses clusters of cells that can produce neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and neurohormones. Therefore, the hypothalamus is considered a gland.

I highlight the role of the hypothalamus because if this brain region and gland dysfunctions, it can affect the entire endocrine system. It controls the autonomic nervous system.

In short, hypothalamic dysfunction can affect our thoughts, emotions, memory, behavior, appetite, weight, body temperature, circadian rhythm, sodium/water balance, blood pressure, growth, and sex drive.

2 — Adrenal Glands

The body grows and maintains homeostasis (balance) via stress. As I highlighted in my previous articles, stress touches all aspects of biology and psychology. Adrenal glands are located above the kidneys and closely interrelated with the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which I will cover in the next section.

I include adrenal glands because they are essential for managing the stress response. As I mentioned in previous articles, stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine (adrenalin), and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) are created by adrenal glands.

In addition, adrenal glands also create aldosterone and DHEA. Aldosterone is critical for blood acidity and the balance of electrolytes. DHEA is essential for creating sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone.

So these hormones also play a role in the body’s stress response. You can learn more about the function of adrenal glands from this article published by Cleveland Clinic.

Adrenal gland disorders usually manifest due to insufficient (Addison’s disease) or excessive stress hormones (Cushing’s syndrome). There are other conditions, such as tumors (pheochromocytoma) and genetic (hyperplasia). According to this paper, “the most frequent cause nowadays is autoimmune adrenalitis.”

3 — Pituitary Gland

The pituitary gland is attached to the hypothalamus and located at the base of the brain, just behind the nose. It has two lobes: the anterior (front) and the posterior (back). I mention these lobes because they have different cells producing different hormones.

For example, the anterior lobe produces growth hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, endorphins, prolactin, LH, and SH. The posterior lobe creates oxytocin and vasopressin.

Hormones created and released by the pituitary gland are critical for growth, sexual behavior, and relationships.

The pituitary disorders include insufficient (hypopituitarism) and excessive (acromegaly) production of the hormones mentioned above.

Other conditions include pituitary tumors, traumatic brain injury, Cushing’s disease, and diabetes insipidus. You can learn more about pituitary gland disorders from this article published by OHSU Brain Institute.

4 — Pineal Gland

As the National Library of Medicine documented in a comprehensive book, “the pineal gland was described as the “Seat of the Soul” by Renee Descartes.”

NIH informs that “the pineal gland is around 100 to 150 mg, highly vascularized, and a secretory neuroendocrine organ located in the mid-line of the brain, outside the blood-brain barrier, and attached to the roof of the third ventricle by a short stalk.”

The primary function of the pineal gland is to receive information about the state of the light/dark cycle from the environment. The pineal gland transmits this environment information by the production and secretion of melatonin.

Melatonin is critical for sleep and wakefulness. In addition, melatonin is a potent natural antioxidant used for cancer treatment. Besides the NIH book, you can learn more about the neuroendocrinology of the pineal gland from the Textbook of Clinical Neurology.

Data obtained during this study shows that “patients with schizophrenia have smaller pineal gland volumes. We hypothesize that volumetric changes in the pineal gland of patients with schizophrenia may be involved in the pathophysiology of this illness.”

Literature covers pineal gland disorders under three categories. They are “pineal gland tumors, injuries that affect the pineal gland, and pineal gland calcification.”

According to the Australian Government Health Direct, “Medical conditions related to the pineal gland are very rare. However, cysts or tumors of the pineal gland may cause symptoms such as a change in vision, headaches, nausea, or seizures.”

5 — Thymus gland

The thymus is part of the lymphatic and endocrine systems. As mentioned in my previous articles, the lymphatic system is a critical part of the defense system to fight against internal and external intruders. It is located in the upper chest between the lungs and above the heart.

As an immunity construct, its primary function is to develop unique white blood cells moving from bone marrow to the thymus gland. When white blood cells (the lymphocytes) evolve, they are called T-cells to protect the body from intruders.

As part of the endocrine system, the thymus gland produces hormones such as thymopoietin, thymosin, thymulin, and the thymic humoral factor. The thymus gland communicates with the pituitary gland to release the necessary hormones for immunity.

The thymus gland disorders include thymus cancer, DiGeorge syndrome, autoimmune conditions (such as pure red cell aplasia and myasthenia gravis), hypogammaglobulinemia, and mediastinal masses.

You can learn more about thymus gland disorders in the Mayo Clinic Connect via a video presented by Dr. Stephen D. Cassivi (MD).

6 — Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands

The thyroid and parathyroid glands are situated in front of the neck. The thyroid gland, a vascular organ, consists of two lobes on each side of the trachea, just below the larynx (voice box). The two lobes are connected by a band of tissue (the isthmus).

The thyroid gland produces two hormones, thyroxine, and triiodothyronine, regulated by the hypothalamus.

These hormones use iodine to synthesize. Therefore, iodine deficiency can affect thyroid function. And, of course, too much iodine is toxic to the body. We need this molecule in adequate amounts for thyroid balance.

Anatomically parathyroid glands are four small masses of epithelial tissue embedded in the connective tissue capsule on the thyroid glands' posterior (back) surface. So these two glands are connected.

The parathyroid glands secrete the parathyroid hormone, also known as the parathormone in the literature. This hormone regulates blood calcium levels.

It stimulates the release of calcium by bones into the bloodstream, impacts the absorption of calcium from food by the intestines, and assists the conservation of calcium by the kidneys regulating vitamin D levels. As I pointed out in a previous article, Vitamin D is also a hormone.

When the blood calcium levels get low, this hormone is triggered and can increase the levels. Insufficient secretion of the parathyroid hormone, also known as hypoparathyroidism, can excite nerves and stimulate muscles. So, the condition can lead to nerve and muscle problems.

You can learn more about thyroid and parathyroid conditions from this paper and the educative resource from Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

7 — Ovaries, Testes, and Prostate Gland

These glands are comprehensive and thoroughly different between males and females. I will summarize them to create awareness as they are associated with some health conditions.

These glands (ovaries and testes) produce sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone for women and testosterone for men. These hormones regulate the reproductive system and sexual characteristics. The prostate’s primary function is to produce the fluid that transports sperm.

Women’s ovaries are located on both sides of the uterus. Men’s testes are located in a pouch that hangs suspended outside. The ovaries produce and store a woman’s eggs. When women experience menopause, ovaries stop making hormones and releasing eggs.

The prostate gland in men is located near the bladder and produces a fluid that makes up a part of semen. For prostate and testicular health affecting 30 million people, you might obtain more guiding information from Loma Linda University Health.

Female glands are associated with various disorders, such as ovarian cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome, and ovarian torsion. You can obtain more information about these disorders from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Conclusions and Takeaways

As I highlighted in my previous articles, these endocrine glands, like organs, depend on hormonal balance. Therefore, a viable way to lower the risks of disorders associated with glands is to maintain hormonal balance.

Even though hormonal imbalance has a genetic component for some people, many of us can balance our hormones via healthy lifestyle choices.

The critical point is to focus on fundamentals such as restorative sleep, quality nutrition, regular exercise, rest, recovery, fun, and other effective stress management strategies like mindfulness and meditation.

Despite your healthy lifestyle habits, if you face hormonal imbalance and notice symptoms, you must seek timely support from qualified healthcare professionals. They can diagnose and treat your conditions timely and allow you to re-balance your hormones.

As glands are comprehensive and cover various systems addressing related conditions might require several specialists covering the endocrine, immune, blood, and nervous systems.

Endocrine glands might also create psychological situations; therefore, seeking from mental health professionals might also be necessary.

Balancing our hormones, neurotransmitters, and other biochemicals via healthy lifestyle choices is crucial as they play a critical role in our health and well-being.

I introduced the intricacies of hormones in various articles before. I also wrote about various neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, GABA, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, adrenalin, and histamine.

Learning about your glands and understanding associated disorders can contribute to mitigating risks with timely support.

I plan to unfold each gland in a different article by delving into details and providing more helpful information.

Therefore your feedback on this article can provide valuable input for my research and content planning. My goal is to inform and inspire my readers. I look forward to your feedback.
