Summary

Tesla has introduced Steam game support for select Model S and X vehicles, allowing owners to play games directly in their cars.

Abstract

Tesla's recent software update has integrated Steam gaming capabilities into certain 2022 Model S and X vehicles with Premium Connectivity and 16GB DDR memory. This innovative feature enables car owners to play thousands of Steam games while stationary, addressing previous safety concerns raised by the US auto safety agency regarding in-car gaming while in motion. The announcement, accompanied by a video showcasing smooth gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077 using a PS5 controller, suggests a new era of in-car entertainment. Despite the author's skepticism about the practicality of gaming in a car, Tesla's move is seen as appealing to a niche audience and represents a significant leap in the integration of gaming into non-traditional platforms.

You Can Now Play Steam Games on Your Tesla

Who needs a gaming console when you’ve got a car like Tesla?

Have you ever been on your way home and so desperate to play your favorite game wishing you could play in your car? Yeah, me neither, but now you can, thanks to Tesla’s latest update, which adds support for Steam games.

Tesla recently announced that in an upcoming holiday update, select Tesla Model S and X variants would gain Steam game support. This was announced via a tweet from Tesla, which included a video. Here’s that tweet.

As you can see from Elon Musk’s retweet, he said that you could apparently play 1000s of Steam games directly from your Tesla. You can also see from the video that it seems to be an additional application that you can likely log into with your personal Steam account.

The video showcased the gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077, which seemed to play very smoothly. Additionally, the person in the video seems to be playing with a PS5 controller.

It has support for various different controller types, much like the steam app on PC, including support for a mouse and keyboard. Although I don’t know how comfortably you could possibly play games in your car with a mouse and keyboard.

Unfortunately, this addition won’t be coming to all Tesla vehicles. It will only be available for Tesla, released in 2022, which also has 16GB DDR memory and Premium Connectivity.

Interestingly Tesla had some issues with the US auto safety agency, which had a problem with the games being playable even when the car was moving, which is obviously a huge safety concern even if autopilot is enabled. Thankfully, users can now only play games while the car is stationary.

Honestly, I can't really think of any situation in which I would prefer to play games in my car.

If I was going on a road trip or something along those lines, I would simply bring my PlayStation, gaming laptop, or some type of portable console with me to play games on the go. But I guess this will appeal to some people but likely not many.
