Gaming and Community

I Joined a Guild in an MMORPG and Immediately Started to Enjoy Myself a Lot More

Joining a community can seriously and pleasantly improve your gaming experience and boost your mood.

As you may know from my previous posts, I have recently gotten into the MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) genre last year when New World was released.

Initially, I played with a few of my friends, but they soon stopped playing because the game wasn't up to their par.

Since New World was my first MMORPG, I didn't have a high standard for these types of games. So I continued playing and eventually fell in love with the game.

I will talk about more of my general experience in a future post outlining my honest review of New World. Keep an eye out for that. I will be completely unbiased in that post.

Anyway, in this story, I’ll be talking about the importance of a community in an online game, as well as my experience with joining a guild in New World.

What is a guild in an MMORPG?

A guild is a group of players with whom players can associate with in the online world. Guilds in MMORPGs are generally part of the same faction and consistently partake in multiplayer content together, such as dungeons, PvP battles, and wars.

Players in guilds can be seen as somewhat of a family since they generally work together and help each other out, whether it’s with some in-game content or as simple as helping each other with their combat builds or gear.

In New World, Guilds are referred to as Companies. A company can be created by anyone and can have up to 100 players. One of the primary purposes of joining a company in the New World is to declare war on another company of the opposing faction in order to claim territory.

Wars are a big part of New World since whichever company owns a particular territory, all of the tax played in that territory, whether it be from the trading post or the workstations, go directly to that company.

I joined a guild/company in New World with the intention of being able to partake in Wars. But what I didn't expect was how much I would enjoy just being a part of a community with whom I could enjoy the game.

We can help each other.

One of the first things I noticed about being a part of a guild was everyone's willingness to help each other out.

Whether it was for PvE or PvP content. Anytime we would either enter a dungeon or queue up for PvP, we were always helping each other with our combat builds, skill trees, and even play styles.

Just after a month of joining this guild, I felt like I had a way better understanding of the combat in the game as well as the mechanics of some of the dungeons.

Additionally, I could use this information to educate some of the newer players who joined our guild to get them up to our level in order to create a community with excellent synergy.

Collaboration

The best part of joining a guild for me was that I always had people I could collaborate with in any aspect of the game. Previously I would gather loot, play PvP and join dungeons as a solo player.

You can imagine that this got kinda boring after a while since I was just silently playing by myself, even if I was playing as part of a group.

But now, whenever I want to partake in any group activity, I almost always have a few people to do it with while on a call. The content is never stale anymore, with like-minded players beside me.

An external platform for our guild

Much like other MMORPGs, guilds in New World usually create a Discord server which is used to chat instead of the in-game chat methods.

A platform like this has proven to be very beneficial since we can easily mention ( @ ) each other if we need more to fill a group or even just for someone to answer a question.

Additionally, we have multiple text channels for different purposes, such as topics for the following.

  • Dungeon Discussion
  • PvP Discussion
  • Leveling Methods
  • Gear Recommendations
  • Useful Information
  • Crafting Requests
  • Trading
  • Etc

This platform is also a great way to announce guild activities and events, which can be a nice way to build up the chemistry between us and allow us to enjoy the game in a unique way.

For example, we recently organized a company hide-and-seek event in which we had a certain area to hide in, in order to escape the seekers. The winner got awarded a bunch of in-game money courtesy of our company leader. It was a fun day.

Motivation

Just having a group of people, I can rely on, and a few people who rely on me can be excellent motivation to continue playing the game.

It is because even after you’ve done almost everything, it can still be fun to revisit some content with new people who you can assist or even who can teach you a few new things.

When I was just a solo player, I was sure I had no chance of ever getting accepted into a war, but now after actively participating in this new guild, I am motivated to improve my PvP skills in order to perform as well as I can in any future war my guild decides to declare.

Final Words

Not only did a guild allow me to partake in group content I was previously unable to do, but it also improved my overall experience with New World and even gave me a very diverse online social life.

I have made a bunch of new friends just by joining a guild who I genuinely enjoy playing this game with. We have helped each other grow in-game to be better players who can confidently collaborate with each other in any aspect of the game.

If I hadn't joined this guild, I suspect I wouldn't even be playing this game anymore since I probably would have gotten bored of playing in a random group with people who don't use voice chat.

To be fair, I have had a few encounters with very friendly players who I’ve had a good time with, but that doesn't compare to the synergy I have with my new guild.

I believe that being a part of a community of any type of online game is a very important aspect of gaming in general which can seriously improve your overall enjoyment and social life.
