Eva Rtology: Specifically, what do you do for a living? Dariusz Gross: Datasculpting E: Where did your career path take you? DG: Having come from a background in (data) sculpting, I use AI to make novel types of art objects. E: You went to school where exactly? DG: I went to art school because I saw it as a great chance to see the world while learning. My most memorable experience was in Klaus Rinke’s famed room 13 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, made famous by Joseph Beuys. This is where he instructs his class of 800 art students.

E: In what fields did you major? DG: M.A. in Sculpture and Machine Learning E: How does a typical day go for you? DG: I get my inspiration from my dreams. In my nocturnal imagination, my robotic creations use information gleaned from a rainbow of platforms to create works of art. And when I finally wake up, there, glowing in the light of Diffusion Models making fresh NFT, is where they exhibit their accomplishments to me.

E: Where did you initially start working in your field? DG: My first studio was my father’s atelier, Siegfried Gross’s sculptor. MyFatherintheCloud.ai was created in his honor. So that he may live on in AI sculpture forever, I have taught robots to replicate my father’s techniques. Several of his pieces have been produced since the initiative began in 2019. Therefore the clock is ticking. E: Tell me about the best part of your employment. DG: Daily, fresh advances are made in artificial intelligence. My greatest joy comes from playing around with forbidden regulations that might have ethical and moral repercussions. The thing that makes me the happiest is going on adventures in artificially built worlds. E: What is it about your employment that you dislike the most? DG: Unfortunately, the general public still hasn’t caught on to the fact that artificial intelligence is not some kind of sentient robot from a science fiction film but rather a complex algorithm that cannot function without human input. E: What kind of impact does your work have on your private life? DG: As a matter of fact, my whole existence is a virtual simulation. Those who are closest to me are aware of this. I see the rest of the physical universe as a predictable cause-and-effect algorithm.

E: Where did you get started, and what have you accomplished thus far? DG: I entered the field of data science in 1993. It was only a one-armed bandit — a poem-arranging slot machine. These days, my daydreams come to life in the shape of virtual worlds, thanks to cutting-edge Google AI units on the cloud. E: To what extent do you foresee changes in your career path over the next five years? DG: After five years, I want my robots (algorithms) to be completely self-sufficient, and my only responsibility is to monitor how they do. Perhaps the most fantastic metaphor for where I want to go in my life is that of a shepherd watching over his flock to make sure they don’t wander off. E: What abilities and traits do you need to possess to succeed in your career? DG: Curiosity and anticipation, E: Please describe the one greatest accomplishment of your working life. DG: Complete autonomy in my work. E: What excites you most about your work? DG: Finding things no one else has found or seeing pictures of things none has seen is what drives the most.
