Serendipity
Transform Adversity to Serendipity
How to raise adversity quotient for personal and professional success

Introduction
Life contains constraints, setbacks, roadblocks, hurdles, humps, showstoppers, difficulties, hitches, incidents, issues, complications, risks, dependencies, and challenges.
Nothing is new about these concepts experienced millions of years in human history. Adversity in nature helped our brains to evolve and distinguished us from other creatures on earth.
I see adversity as a blessing in disguise because it helps me to create new neural pathways in my brain. Based on my studies, I know that adversity is an essential factor for neuroplasticity and resilience.
To increase our intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ), we must raise our adversity quotient (AQ).
How can we raise our adversity quotient?
From my experience, I propose three key steps to achieve this goal.
The first step is to understand and accept the reality that constraints, setbacks, roadblocks, hurdles, humps, and challenges are part of life.
The second step is to condition our thinking to see adversity as a blessing in disguise.
The third step is leveraging adversity with mindfulness to create serendipity.
If we can work on our adversity quotient mindfully with dedication, persistence, and commitment, we can experience transformation in our personal and professional life.
We must learn to transform adversity into serendipity to achieve our goals.
Serendipity is not a ‘mumbo jumbo’ anymore. I studied serendipity scientifically both as part of computer science and cognitive science studies. I learned a lot about serendipity and gained insights from my distinguished mentors, such as Marvin Minski, Benoit Mandelbrot, and more. Both Minsky and Mandelbrot have articulated the importance of serendipity in their elegant and inspiring works.
I owe my personal and professional success to serendipity. As a transformational tool, serendipity made me an inventor and helped me strengthen my leadership capability. Through serendipity, I rewired my brain to new possibilities and opportunities. We can use serendipity as an innovative neuroplasticity tool in all walks of life.
How can we practice serendipity on Medium?
As mentioned in my previous articles, the more you give, the more you receive is the principle we must follow. However, as leaders, we need to initiate the process by giving first and then receiving later.
I propose you a 10-day serendipity challenge on Medium.
For the next ten days, read ten articles from ILLUMINATION each day. For these ten articles, highlight key points, leave one supportive comment, and share it on your social media, such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Then, follow ten new writers randomly leaving traces on their works of art.
When you do these activities in the next ten days, you will start noticing how good serendipity can work for you.
If you don’t believe my points, please experiment with the ten-day challenge. If it doesn’t work for you, feel free to contact me and prove me wrong. I am confident that you will taste serendipity and see noticeable differences.
Sure, we may have some roadblocks along the way, but they are not showstoppers for our progress. We must see the roadblocks as blessings in disguise.
My contacts can notice my care and appreciation through other means, such as highlighting my comments and sharing their content on social media. No system, process, and people are perfect. Awareness of this fact can help us turn annoyance into joy. Optimism is essential too. So, I believe Medium will do something about system glitches soon.
