Got a health problem? The answer is not to consult Dr. Google or Dr. Wikepedia. The internet is full of health information, but it is challenging to know who you can trust.

To help readers find validated and trustworthy medical content, we created a medical pub called Being well. While Elemental serves as the Medium owned publication for health and wellness, we knew there was room for outstanding curated content ready to be served to readers everywhere.

Great medical authors needed a space to share, and Being Well provides a perfect home. Prompted by Dr. Mehmet Yildiz and other Illumination writers, here is our introduction to the medical pub Being Well.

Every Medium writer must find a home for their work. Being Well, run by doctors, is a place where we share thoughts, articles, advice, and opinions with colleagues and the general public.

Our team of medical professionals and medical writers are building a repository of trustworthy medical information on Medium. These articles are easily accessible to the general public from a trusted source.

What is the purpose of the Being Well publication?

Healthcare authors must take a cautious approach with COVID-19 research and medical writing. Case reports on Facebook should not trigger governmental actions. A small clinical trial on Twitter can not lead to changes in public policy. Doctors on Tik-Tok and Youtube should not determine when our economies reopen.

Doctors and all health care workers play an essential role in the pandemic. We are the front line workers. We must take our social responsibility seriously to provide scientific and validated content when sharing content publicly.

Our goals are to:

  1. Save lives during the pandemic
  2. Wave the red flag of caution regarding speed science
  3. Curate validated scientific content for others
  4. Inspire and celebrate the good in others

Anyone interested in improving their lives and increasing their scientific knowledge will enjoy the content and weekly newsletters from Being Well.

Recently, one of our stories prompted national media coverage of the previously ignored Covid-19 crisis in the Rio Grande Valley.

What type of articles does Being Well publish?

If you’re a qualified medical professional or health writer with something on your mind, we’ve got just space for you. Being Well is changing and growing weekly as we adapt to accommodate the amazing articles our writers create.

To see just how diverse a range of topics we cover, explore the publication for yourself.

A few categories we like:

Scrubs Life. These are opinion pieces and personal thoughts on the medical profession, patients, and practices. Doctors speak out about the more personal side of their lives and offer important insights into medical care and the sacrifices and privileges of being a physician.

We feature the lighter side as well as deeply moving pieces. We don’t shy away from important opinion pieces, even if they’re controversial.

I love this post from David Hill.

Equality. Important issues relating to race and gender discrimination in modern medicine affect the quality of service and care patients receive. Want to raise or highlight something that troubles you? This is the place for it.

Here is an example from Dr. Hesham A. Hassaballa.

The Couch. No prizes for guessing, the Couch is our mental health section. We welcome articles on anything relating to Mental Health and well-being. It's one of our most popular pages and really topical currently on the heels of the pandemic.

Here is an example from Lisa Bradburn, who also runs the rapidly growing Being Well Facebook page.

Grant H Brenner often posts incredible post on neuroscience and psychology.

Dr. Patricia Farrell is a frequent contributor with outstanding insight.

Women’s Health. Everything and anything related to women and their health. Sorry guys, but it turns out you’re just not that interesting, health-wise. Or at least not when the editor is a gynecologist.

Waistlines. Obesity and its associated conditions are rapidly becoming the leading killer in our societies, and COVID has underlined the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We’d love to see helpful, practical pieces here, that encourage people to pursue a leaner life. Actual practical and actionable advice that anyone can follow, relating to exercise, diet, and general health. Amaze us.

General Health We’d love to have fifty pages, but Medium only allows us seven, so for other topics that we can’t fit in anywhere else, we have general health. Anything goes here, as long as its medically relatable.

Loren A Olson MD submitted this curated post.

Chemistry Class Drugs, medications, hormones, gene treatments, and anything related goes into our pharma section. Just heard about a new drug that’s passed trials or a new use for an existing one? Tell us about it here. Articles on topics like statins, NSAIDs and other drugs are welcomed with open arms. This is also the place to discuss opioid addictions and similar topics.

Nancy R. Gough, PhD helps to sort through the hydroxychloroquine controversy.

During the pandemic, we cover Covid-19 often. Here are some of our bests posts.
