Our newest editor, the fine art of saying more with less, diversifying your portfolio, challenge submissions and new writers

Hello Globetrotters!

How is everyone doing? Hopefully well! 🥳💃👯🎈🎊🎉

So happy to be here and be able to celebrate you and our thriving pub.

Still growing leaps and bounds!

Hard to imagine it was only back on July 13 that I announced this pub had crossed the 1,000 mark. Now here we are a little over a month later and we are at 1,600 already! 😲😱

Being an editor on a rapidly growing pub is a trip! There ends up being a lot of issues no one ever thought they’d have to worry about. If it wasn’t for Warren Patterson planting this little seed for us none of us would be here and I never forget that either! So a big thank you to him!

Limiting stories?

So, since we have a new editor we’ve decided to throw out the two stories per week minimum. It was already getting to be too much of a headache to keep track of.

That being said, we are hoping that people will police themselves a little bit. We love your stories but submitting too many to a large pub gets to be a problem as we still want to accommodate newer voices as well.

Plus, it’s always a good idea to have several different publications to submit to and to vary them. On Medium especially it’s a very good idea. Many pubs have loyal niche followers and as writers, this will open yourselves up to a wider pool of readers.

So, while we love to read your stories and still want you to submit, here are suggestions of other pubs and the types of stories they publish so that you can diversify your portfolio. Please always read the guidelines to these pubs thoroughly so you know what kind of content they are looking for:

• Our newest editor Jillian has a great new publication where you can submit articles about unique and interesting food from around the world: Sharing Food — Medium.
• Our editor Gerald has his popular pub, Digital Global Traveler — Medium, which many of our writers also submit stories to. One of my stories published there got nearly 1k views: “5 Caribbean Islands I Want to Visit Soon”.
• Want to write a story about how grateful you are to be able to travel? My good friend Trista’s pub “Thank You Notes” would be an excellent place to publish that story.
• Have a story that’s just plain fun? Consider my friend Hollie’s pub “Everything Fun”.
• Have a great photo story? My own pub “In Living Color” is a great place for these and many of our stories have gotten hundreds and thousands of views.

One thing newer writers might not understand is pub size doesn’t always matter when it comes to getting traffic! I’ve gotten lots of traffic on stories published in smaller pubs!

More great pubs I know and love. I’ve published stories in all of these at one time or another:

• “Wildlife Trekker — Medium”
• “Six Word Photo Story Challenge — Medium”
• “Weeds & Wildflowers — Medium”
• “The Haven — Medium” (funny travel stories of course!)

There are so many more great pubs out there that I just haven’t had time to publish in. Do check them out!

Saying more with less is a great skill!

However, we have decided to keep the 10-minute story maximum. There’s a lot to be said for saying more with less. One of the few things I miss from the newspaper and magazine era is the essential need for concise writing.

I myself started out in this era and I still remember dealing with a strict word count… when they would say 300, 500, 1000 words… they meant it! There wasn’t much budging. It wasn’t a choice. You may notice newspapers and magazines have a dedicated space for editorial. Within that editorial, they will usually include sidebars and of course advertising. That’s how they make their money to pay writers.

The smaller the piece the bigger the challenge... and that’s when it becomes fun for true word nerds like myself. So, then comes the process of “whittling down”, which can be a heartbreaking and laborious process, but you know what? I believe it forces people to become better writers. You learn to say more with less by combining sentences and thoughts.

So, here’s a bit of a challenge…

Let’s face it. Bored readers will stop reading. Or they may just do a hasty skim. However, packing writing with sharp concise details helps ensure they read everything — they won’t want to miss a thing. They can’t miss a thing — too much great story details!

Since Medium counts minutes and not words, let’s say you have a 15-min read. Can you challenge yourself to say everything you wanted to say in the 15-min read in a 10-min read… what about 8-mins or 5-mins?

Dare yourself! Try it and see if it works to make you a better writer.
