Hair Down to There

“Pull Quotes” of a 4 Year Old: Weeks 33-34

It feels like not too long ago we were fielding reactions to our daughter like “Hey champ!” and “Aww, what a cutie! What’s his name?” and “Beautiful baby boy!” This was back when she had nothing more atop her head than peach fuzz or Monchhichi hair at best.

I do recall, at one point between then and now, her lying back in the tub with hair suddenly flowing around her head in a very Ariel-like way. Lately when washing her hair, she’s been craning her neck to see how far the tips reach down her back. Then giggling about how it’s down to her butt. (I still giggle at the word “butt,” too. Let us be kids!)

→ ICMYI: catch up on “Pull Quotes” with the full list below.

Speaking about my daughter’s traits, here’s a look back at something I wrote on what she shares with her mother: A Wishlist for Our Daughter. Enjoy.

Now onto the “Pull Quotes” over these 2 weeks:

Monday, August 13

“Ready, set, get wet!”

Tuesday, August 14

“Daddy, say that the X is not there.”

Wednesday, August 15

Daughter: I wish I had a motorcycle. Daddy: You wish you had Moses’ ankle?

Thursday, August 16

Daddy: What would you like for dessert? Daughter: Something not healthy.

Friday, August 17

(playing drive-thru) “Can I get some coffee, chicken nuggets and French toast?”

Saturday, August 18

“Both of you guys are silly. And even me, I’m the mostest silliest.”

Sunday, August 19

(singing) “We keep trying, we keep trying yeah yeah yeah. We keep trying, we keep trying yeah yeah yeah. Don’t give up don’t give up yeah. Yeahyeah we don’t give up. Aw yeah.”

Monday, August 20

Daddy: Are you cooking Minnie? Daughter: Yeah, cause she’s a bad girl. She’s a witch.

Poor Minnie.

Tuesday, August 21

“I’m going out. Text me if you can.”

Wednesday, August 22

“Ok ready… Set sail!”

Thursday, August 23

“I’m not really mad at you. I’m mad at the stink.”

Friday, August 24

“Activating quiet.”

Saturday, August 25

Daughter: I’m trying to take a picture of the house. Daddy: Can I be in it? Daughter: I want to take it of the whole house. Daddy: So that’s a no. Daughter: Bend down!

Sunday, August 26

Daughter: (knocking) Someone’s knocking. Daddy: Answer the door, ask “who is it?” Daughter: Who is it? Daughter: It’s brother John.

There’s a lot more to our hair than simple aesthetics. Whether it’s dealing with becoming older when we find grey hairs or reclaiming a part of ourselves when life seems to be getting away. These dead cells that hang from our heads are as big a part of us and our individuality as anything.

At the same time, they also do not make up our the entirety of our identity. I imagine right now my daughter’s hair doesn’t even register on her self-awareness scale. I hope as she grows in and out of various phases of her life, she gets this. And further that she doesn’t let any one part of her body define her self-image.

She is more than her hair. She is more than the sum of her body parts. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Hehe, I wrote butts again. 🍑

If you’re happy and you know it, and you really wanna show it… 👏🏽
