A Good Memory

“Pull Quotes” of a 4 Year Old: Weeks 31-32

Back when my daughter was 2, we took her to a fall festival where she got to ride a pony around part of the park at the center of our town. Weeks later when driving her past the area, she reminded me that she had ridden a pony there.

Her capacity for recall has only grown since then. Now she not only points out where we saw a car that had a noticeably dented door, but what we were talking about when we originally noticed it. She’s also very helpful in the morning, making sure daddy doesn’t forget his keys for the thousandth time.

Speaking of memories, last weekend two actors spent the day memorizing a 10-minute play I wrote mere hours before. It was part of a 24-hour play event. I wrote about the experience and what I learned from it all in “Some Simple Truths I Learned by Writing.” Spoiler: they were amazing in performance.

Onto my daughter’s “Pull Quotes” of these 2 weeks:

Monday, July 30

“I’m one more hungry.”

Tuesday, July 31

“Let’s do the airplane thing.”

Wednesday, August 1

“I’m the funniest kid of them all.”

Thursday, August 2

“Daddy, do you know freeze tag?”

Friday, August 3

“You know what guacamole is made of? Vocados.”

Saturday, August 4

“Bye bye, we’re gonna leave without you.”

Sunday, August 5

(singing) “Rock a my baby, in the sky, you rock all day…”

Guess who… won

Monday, August 6

Daddy: (reading) B is for… Daughter: Seagull! Daddy: No, B… buh, buh… Daughter: Beagull!

Tuesday, August 7

Daddy: Oh I forgot the bag! Daughter: Don’t worry. We can just hold it in our hands.

Wednesday, August 8

“It’s okay, I’m not gonna call the police.”

Thursday, August 9

Daughter: I like your shirt, it’s beautiful… Mommy: Oh, thank you. Daughter: and you’re beautiful too… Mommy: Aww. Daughter: but gorilla is handsome.

Friday, August 10

Daddy: I love you. Daughter: I love you more. Daddy: Aww. Daughter : I love you 2018! And I love mommy 2018!

Saturday, August 11

“He said ‘ooh sha!’”

Sunday, August 12

Daddy: Do you want to bring one of those guys with us? Daughter: They’re not guys, they’re girls. Daddy: Friends. I should say friends. Daughter: Or you could say girls.

Part of the reason I started writing these quotes down was to remember them all myself. At the time, she had just begun speaking and I had just begun losing my mind. 😉 Another part was knowing she would not fully remember these as she grew and her young mind brimmed with ideas, vocabulary, and more important thoughts.

I hope her good memory serves her well later in remembering things. But well, I mostly hope the things she remembers later are all good memories.

If you’re happy and you know it, and you really wanna show it… 👏🏽
