A Growing Independence

“Pull Quotes” of a 4 Year Old: Weeks 7-8

This past weekend, our daughter slept over her auntie’s while mommy and daddy had a much-needed “night on the town.” It was the first time she’d done an overnight with family in a while and it reminded me: firstly, how emotional I got her first-ever sleepover, at my sister’s house (cue: my uncontrollable man-sobs in the car as I drove away), but also how far she’s come from our days living on the living room rug. Needing us to hold her, play with her, and generally be within a few feet of her all day.

Now she’s perfectly content off playing with her cousins or her friends or even just off in her bedroom or playroom. She can pick out her own clothes and get dressed all by herself. She is in and out of the bathroom as she needs, even during the night. She knows how to put her dishes in the sink, things into the recycle, laundry in her basket and countless other tasks. Whether she wants to, though, is a different story.

ICYMI, catch up with the first three episodes of “Pull Quotes,” read:

Onto the “Pull Quotes” from the past two weeks:

Monday, Feb 12

“Before four… Hey! that rhymes.”

Tuesday, Feb 13

“I drew a pickle, that’s the funny part.”

Wednesday, Feb 14

“My poopy has eyes. He’s a different one.”

Thursday, Feb 15

“Bambi was looking for Faline and Faline was looking for Bambi.”

Friday, Feb 16

Mommy: Naked mommy! Daughter: I like your tattoo behind your back.

Saturday, Feb 17

“Mommy, I have a heart made out of love for you.”

Sunday, Feb 18

“When it’s my turn to talk, let me talk. So let me talk now.

Monday, Feb 19

“We have to have a secret in the store. My name is Ashely. Don’t tell anyone. Unless I see my friends from school.”

Tuesday, Feb 20

“It goes ‘Thundah, feel the thundah, lightning and the thundah.’”

Wednesday, Feb 21

Daughter: (offering freshly-washed hands) Smell. Mommy: Ooh delicious. Daughter: You can’t eat ’em though!

Thursday, Feb 22

“Did you see the chicken place?” (new restaurant coming)

Friday, Feb 23

“Do trees grow?”

Saturday, Feb 24

“So honey, this is my baby and I’m gonna talk her for a walk.”

Sunday, Feb 25

“Accidents happen. And mistakes happen. Sometimes they can happen at the same time.”

She is really a good kid and though she may not agree with us sometimes, I am happy she asserts herself and her independence. (I know! I’ll talk to you again in 10 years when she’s asserting it all the more forcefully.) Still, I think I’d rather her be strong than not.

Part of me (a very small portion) misses when she was so dependent on me and needed me more. But, she is usually up for a hug or some snugtime on the couch if I feel that need (and if mommy isn’t hogging her 😉). I just have to ask and daddy has no problem “using his words” (well… most of the time).

See you in March!

If you’re happy and you know it, and you really wanna show it… 👏🏽
