An Ear for Language

“Pull Quotes” of a 4 Year Old: Weeks 25-26

Sure, my braid game could use some work. Let’s just focus on the literal “ear” here, will ya?

Be still my writing heart. My daughter is showing more and more interest in words. (Yes Ernio, isn’t that what we’re doing here? Right.) “Literally,” “specifically,” “coincidence.” If she’s not using a polysyllabic correctly in proper context, she’s asking basically for definitions and example sentences. How soon is too soon to start grooming her for spelling bees?

If you missed my Father’s Day followup, please read or bookmark it:

Previous “Pull Quotes” list (is getting longer):

😀 A Personality (Weeks 1-2) | 😱 A Flair for the Dramatic (3-4) 👹 An Active Imagination (5-6) | 🙋🏻 A Growing Independence (7-8) 🏡 A Happy Homelife (9-10) | 💝 A Sweet Heart (11-12) 👀 Her Mother’s Eyes (13-14) | 🚀A Sense of Adventure (15-16) 💃 A Kick in Her Step (17-18) | 🎤 A Song on Her Lips (19-20) 🌟A Star in the Making (21-22) |🌀 A Swirl in Her Hair (23-24)

Here are the latest “Pull Quotes” in her own words:

Monday, June 18

“Sun’s cream” (sunscreen)

Tuesday, June 19

Daddy: 1, 2,…17,18,19… Daughter: Just go!

Wednesday, June 20

“I’m a dolphin. But my legs don’t have fins.”

Thursday, June 21

“And daddy, excramation point.” (exclamation point)

Friday, June 22

“If it doesn’t move or talk, it’s a sticker.”

Saturday, June 23

Mommy: I like your outfit. Daughter: It’s not an outfit, it’s my body.

Sunday, June 24

“I had a dream I was eating pancakes.”

Already miss vacation. ::sigh::

Monday, June 25

“Dada, sometimes when you’re at work, I miss you when I’m at school.”

Tuesday, June 26

“Mama it’s strawberry and I liked it.”

Wednesday, June 27

“Speaking of coincidences…”

Thursday, June 28

“Tech-nic-nee” (technically)

Friday, June 29

“If the music is a boy, then you sing. If the music is a girl, then I sing. If the music is a boy and a girl, then we both sing.”

Saturday, June 30

(to kids she just met at playground) “Everyone sit down and close your eyes.”

Sunday, July 1

Daughter: Daddy, there’s a spider! Daddy: Did you get it? Daughter: No, we need your help because mommy’s scared.

I make no promises to Medium future humans, but it will be something when she starts to put pen to paper. (Will “finger to key” replace that phrase?) I know I’m completely getting ahead of myself, she’s barely writing her name.

But the interest is, at least for now, seemingly there. She’ll pause us mid-conversation to ask what [that word] means. And it’s quite the delightful exercise to break down language to its simplest essence to explain it to her.

I know when she’s ready to read and write, it will only get harder to contain myself. For now, we can enjoy learning word by word. And I can enjoy her laughing at my wordplay before it falls victim to the eye-roll.

If you’re happy and you know it, and you really wanna show it… 👏🏽
