“Pull Quotes” of a 4 Year Old: Weeks 35-36
Her knock-knock jokes could use some work. And—though I don’t broadcast her dark side (she’s a kid, it’s inevitable)—her whine has soured with age. But, if there’s one thing that makes up for those minor downsides, it’s her laugh.
It’s my one job: “to make her laugh every day,” I’ve written before. And when I do, it really can light up my day to hear those snickers, giggles and full belly jiggles with such wild and young abandon.

Daughter: Symbiosis! Do you know how to spell it? Daddy: Symbiosis? Yes, S-y-m-b-i-o-s-i-s. Symbiosis. Daughter: Ok. Repeat after me. Sym… Daddy: Sym. Daughter: Bi… Daddy: Bi. Daughter: Osis… Daddy: Osis. Daughter: Symbiosis!

Daughter: Knock knock. Daddy: Who is it? Daughter: Why did the chicken cross the road? Daddy: Why did the chicken cross the road who? Daughter: Banana head.

“Pretend that you are my dad and a pilot.”

“Spotlight: on!”

“It’s on television so it’s not real.”
Sunday, Sept 9
“You’re my blankie. You’re gonna stay with me.”
She has already begun the emotional blackmail, the “I won’t love you anymore”s, the getting angry or frustrated at daddy and even some talking back. We’re probably at least a few years off from the “I hate you”s and “I wish I were never born into this family,” so there’s definitely more to look forward to.
For now though, we laugh daily. We kid, joke around and are ridiculously silly with one another. And I’ll take it for as long as I can. Banking each one in the safety deposit box of my heart. Replaying them again and again on the projector screen of my mind to never forget them.
Her smiles will always melt me, her tears will always break my heart, her hugs will never go unanswered but her laughs, those glorious cackles, will always top them all for me.
