A Great Laugh

“Pull Quotes” of a 4 Year Old: Weeks 35-36

image via Messenger + Sparkly filter

Her knock-knock jokes could use some work. And—though I don’t broadcast her dark side (she’s a kid, it’s inevitable)—her whine has soured with age. But, if there’s one thing that makes up for those minor downsides, it’s her laugh.

It’s my one job: “to make her laugh every day,” I’ve written before. And when I do, it really can light up my day to hear those snickers, giggles and full belly jiggles with such wild and young abandon.

→ ICMYI: catch up on “Pull Quotes” with the full list below.

While we’re speaking of deplorables and adorables, I took time this week to get down some rather urgent business: my first song*! If you’re into love and laughs, even if at my vocal expense, please give it a listen (or just read). 😄 *I’ve co-written songs before but only lyrics, this time it’s me on the whole kebab.

Back to the reason you’re here, the “Pull Quotes”:

Monday, August 27

“(playing hide and seek) Here or not, here I come…”

Tuesday, August 28

“(half-asleep) I see, on my sheet, they look like little crabs, pretend crabs.”

Wednesday, August 29

(as I change the radio station) “Daddy, I like that song!”

Thursday, August 30

“You know what I think, maybe my belly hurts because we do this… (does chest-slap wrestling move I taught her)”

Friday, August 31

“You have to watch out for me cause I need to go first.”

Saturday, September 1

Mommy: What does that one taste like? Daughter: Orange. Orange the fruit, not orange the color.

Sunday, Sept 2

“Hoo-hoo Hoo-hoo, I’m a owl, Hoo-hoo. Look at me! I’m a owl, Hoo-hoo. Hoo-hoo, I love you, Hoo-hoo. Hoo-hoo, I love you!”

the owl in question

Monday, Sept 3

Daughter: Symbiosis! Do you know how to spell it? Daddy: Symbiosis? Yes, S-y-m-b-i-o-s-i-s. Symbiosis. Daughter: Ok. Repeat after me. Sym… Daddy: Sym. Daughter: Bi… Daddy: Bi. Daughter: Osis… Daddy: Osis. Daughter: Symbiosis!

Tuesday, Sept 4

“This is serious.”

Wednesday, Sept 5

Daughter: Knock knock. Daddy: Who is it? Daughter: Why did the chicken cross the road? Daddy: Why did the chicken cross the road who? Daughter: Banana head.

Thursday, Sept 6

“Pretend that you are my dad and a pilot.”

Friday, Sept 7

“Spotlight: on!”

Saturday, Sept 8

“It’s on television so it’s not real.”

Sunday, Sept 9

“You’re my blankie. You’re gonna stay with me.”

She has already begun the emotional blackmail, the “I won’t love you anymore”s, the getting angry or frustrated at daddy and even some talking back. We’re probably at least a few years off from the “I hate you”s and “I wish I were never born into this family,” so there’s definitely more to look forward to.

For now though, we laugh daily. We kid, joke around and are ridiculously silly with one another. And I’ll take it for as long as I can. Banking each one in the safety deposit box of my heart. Replaying them again and again on the projector screen of my mind to never forget them.

Her smiles will always melt me, her tears will always break my heart, her hugs will never go unanswered but her laughs, those glorious cackles, will always top them all for me.

If you’re happy and you know it, and you really wanna show it… 👏🏽
