A Practical Guide to Overcoming Fear and Anxiety Related to Spirituality
Tips and strategies for finding peace and acceptance when nothing is as it seems

“Are you afraid of what you do?” a friend asked me while we chatted on Zoom.
I am a spiritual person who does a lot of deep spiritual work and sometimes run into certain dangers on the spiritual path. I encounter things that are unsettling and make encounters with spirits that are deceiving. I intercede for those in bondage and seem to be constantly fighting demons. That’s what I do.
“I’m terrified of what I’m called to do,” I answered my friend. “I fear the dangers that lurk on the path. The illusions are trippy you can easily fall for them and the distractions never look like distractions until you’ve wasted years of your life. The spiritual attacks are exhausting. The opposition is a constant struggle and life sometimes feels like one warfare after the other. I fear the spiritual path and that’s why I walk with God.”
A spiritual awakening opens your eyes to see what you couldn’t see before, and what you see when you can see clearly is sometimes very fearful.
Spirituality is a deeply personal and often complex aspect of our lives. The spiritual nature of life can be a truly transformative experience. For some, it provides a sense of meaning, purpose, and connection to something greater than themselves. But for others, this can be a source of fear and anxiety.
A spiritual awakening can open up a whole new world of possibilities and understanding that may have previously been hidden from view. It opens your eyes to see what you couldn't see before and what you see when your eye can see is not always pleasing.
When it comes to spirituality, nothing is as it seems and there are indeed many illusions, distractions, and dangers lurking in the shadows. And that is the truth. You would be failing yourself if you went out there thinking it's all angels, butterflies, and sunflowers in the grass. The snakes and the scorpions are always under the grass where you can’t see them. Despite this knowledge, you can’t be afraid.
“How do I stop being afraid?” She asks.
Fear is a spirit that binds whatever it holds. It cripples you and keeps you from taking steps forward. It keeps you right where it has you, so you never go where you’re called.
The only thing to fear on the spiritual path is the spirit of fear itself.
If you or someone you know is struggling with fear and anxiety related to spirituality, it’s important to acknowledge and validate these feelings. While it’s natural to experience some level of fear or uncertainty when exploring spirituality, it shouldn’t be a source of ongoing distress or anxiety.
Here are some tips and strategies I gave my friend to help her overcome fear and anxiety related to spirituality:
1. Identify Its Source
Fear can manifest in many ways, and it’s important to understand where it’s coming from. What is the root cause of your fear? Are you afraid of the unknown or of being judged by others? Identifying the source of your fear can help you to better understand and manage it.
Some common sources of fear related to spirituality include:
- Fear of the unknown: Many people are afraid of what they don’t understand. If you’re new to exploring spirituality, it’s natural to feel uncertain and anxious about what you might discover.
- Fear of judgment: If you come from a background where spirituality is not embraced and so not openly discussed or accepted, you may be afraid of being judged or ostracized for your beliefs.
- Fear of rejection: Similarly, you may be afraid of rejection from friends or family members who don’t share your beliefs or who are critical of your spiritual journey.
- Fear of losing control: Some people are afraid that exploring spirituality will lead to a loss of control over their lives or a sense of disconnection from reality.
Whatever the source of your fear, it’s important to get to the bottom of it. Take some time to explore your fears and where they’re coming from, and be gentle with yourself as you work through them. You’re already feeling afraid, so don’t terrorize yourself some more. Treat yourself the way you would treat a friend who was feeling afraid.
Identifying the source of your fear can help you to better understand and manage it.
2. Learn More About Spirituality
One of the most effective ways to overcome fear and anxiety related to spirituality is to learn more about it. The more you learn and understand the concept of spirituality, the less fearful and anxious you’re likely to be.
There are many different ways to learn more about spirituality, including:
- Reading books: There are many books on spirituality, ranging from practical guides to memoirs to philosophical books. Find books that resonate with you and that speak to your specific concerns and questions. This is a book I wrote specifically for spiritual warfare and to help you navigate the dangers, distractions, and illusions on the spiritual path
- Attending workshops or retreats: Workshops and retreats can be a great way to explore spirituality in a supportive and immersive environment. Look for workshops or retreats that are in line with your beliefs and values.
- Talking to others: Talking to others who share your beliefs and values can be a powerful way to learn more about spirituality and to feel less alone in your journey. Whether you speak to a spiritual coach, attend a spiritual group, or talk to friends or family members who are also exploring their spirituality, find a community of people who can teach you, support and encourage you. After our conversation, my friend said I eased her fears.
Learning more about spirituality can alleviate some of the fears and anxieties by providing you with a greater sense of knowledge and understanding.
When you have an awareness of the fear and a knowledge of it, your fears lose its power.
3. Practice Self-Care
Another important way to overcome fear and anxiety related to spirituality is to practice self-care. Self-care refers to any activity or practice that promotes physical, emotional, or spiritual well-being. There are many self-care practices that can be helpful for managing anxiety and promoting a sense of peace and calm. Some common practices include:
- Prayer: Prayer is a helpful tool for managing fears and anxiety in several ways. It provides me with a sense of peace and comfort when I’m anxious or feeling afraid. It provides me with a feeling of being surrounded and protected by a loving and caring presence which is always so soothing. Prayer also shifts my focus away from negative thoughts and fears towards positive, hopeful ones. When I pray, I can express gratitude for the good things in my life and ask for help in overcoming my fears and anxieties. When you pray, ask for guidance and strength to deal with the things you fear that are causing you anxiety. This can help you feel more empowered to handle your fears.
- Meditation: Meditation is another powerful tool for reducing anxiety and promoting mindfulness. Meditation has been shown to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and tension. By focusing on the breath and clearing the mind, meditation can promote a sense of relaxation and calmness in the body and mind. When you are calm, you are better able to control your emotions. Meditation can help you be more aware of your thoughts and feelings, and to respond to them in a more balanced and calm way. It can help you become more aware of your own patterns of thinking and feeling, which can help you recognize and manage anxiety more effectively. There are many different meditation techniques to choose from, so it’s important to find one that resonates with you.
- Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the present moment, without judgment. Practicing mindfulness can help you stay focused on the here and now and let go of your fears and worries about the past or future.
- Yoga: Yoga is a physical practice that can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation. It’s also a spiritual practice that can help you to connect with your inner self and cultivate a sense of peace and clarity.
- Exercise: Regular exercise can help to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of well-being. I love skipping ropes, but whether you prefer running, swimming, or lifting weights, find an activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.
- Spending time in nature: Spending time in nature can be a powerful way to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Whether you go for a hike, sit by a lake, or simply spend time in your backyard, make time to connect with the natural world and disconnect from your fears.

4. Seek Support
My friend is smart. She realized there was a problem, and she scheduled to have a chat with me. Together, we were able to explore the root cause of her fears and come up with strategies for her to deal with them.
One of the most important things you can do if you’re struggling with fear and anxiety related to spirituality is to seek support. This may include talking to a trusted spiritual advisor or counselor who can help you work through your fears and anxieties in a safe and supportive way.
A spiritual advisor can provide guidance and support as you navigate your spiritual journey, and can help you to better understand and work through any fears or anxieties you may be experiencing. Similarly, a spiritual counselor or therapist can help you to explore the root causes of your fears and to develop strategies for managing them.
When seeking support, it’s important to find someone who is knowledgeable and experienced in working with individuals who are exploring their spirituality. Look for someone who is open-minded, non-judgmental, and who shares your core values and beliefs. This can provide a sense of community and support, which can be helpful in overcoming fear and anxiety related to spirituality.

Final Thoughts
Exploring spirituality can be a deeply rewarding and transformative experience, but it can also be fraught with fear and anxiety.
Through her spiritual experiences, my friend has come to realize that there is so much more to life than what meets the eye and some of it is fearful, but she now sees that there is nothing to fear but the spirit of fear itself.
If you’re feeling like something is missing in your life, or if you’re simply curious about what lies beyond the physical world but you feel afraid of the spiritual path, I encourage you to be bold and courageous.
Apply these tips to rise above your fears so that you can fully explore your spirituality to see where it takes you. Explore the spiritual path at your own pace and be gentle with yourself as you navigate your journey. Who knows — you may just discover a whole new world of possibilities that you never knew existed if you are able to conquer your fears and move forward.
Nothing on the spiritual path is as it seems, but your intuition will guide you in the right direction. With time, courage, and a willingness to keep going forward, you can overcome your fears and anxieties and find a greater sense of peace and acceptance.
