A New Format for Tracking Medium Growth

How engaging are your content and headlines?

Photo by Edward Howell on Unsplash

One of the commitments that I have to myself as a writer is to track my progress and growth. A crucial aspect is tuning into how my writing is engaging readers.

So for this month, I’m offering up how I’m tracking my progress:

  • Earnings — it is a side hustle, after all 😏
  • Views — how engaging are your headlines?
  • Read-throughs — how engaging is your content?
  • Reflecting on last month’s goals and setting new ones that align with your mission.

Earnings

Top 5 posts

Flop 5 posts

Lessons learned — two obvious, one new

  1. Curation gets eyeballs on your articles — this is well established and why my mental health-related articles are the highest two earning articles.
  2. A snazzy, emotion-provoking title gets eyeballs (quadrupled Medium earnings???), but I feel really guilty about it. We have enough anger- and fear-provoking tweets, articles, content going around that it felt weird, even though I wasn’t going for either of those emotions.
  3. Build/find a community. Relative to last month, my poetry did significantly better! The idea behind getting readers is to also engage and give back to the community for that topic, and this month I read so many poems as a means of self-care. That’s also probably why the TV show related posts did the worst — they aren’t really top of mind and I personally also haven’t read anyone else’s TV reviews. That in itself is telling.

Views

Views tell me which headlines are working because these are the people who click-into the articles.

Lessons learned

  1. A little modest self-promotion goes a long way. I’ve been experimenting on a few ways to spotlight past articles, especially for readers who are just discovering my account. This included having a unique, changing author bio that highlights a different set of articles each time, a reference to “going down the rabbit hole” more similar to others on Medium.
  2. Curation gets you eyeballs, but emotional headlines won out more.
  3. People are generally not interested in Cantonese article but four really nice Medium readers hopped on and read it anyways, which I hope helped them find out that all Cantonese articles will have an English direct translation.

Read-throughs

Read-throughs give me a sense of what type of content is engaging people until the end.

  1. Short and sweet does the job. While long, in-depth articles are the ones that get curated and more distribution, it’s the shorter, poem-like articles that get the most read-throughs.
  2. Balance the short and long articles. With #1 in mind, I’m learning that the in-depth articles might not get the most read-throughs, they’re the ones that are getting others acquainted and familiar with my work. The short articles are the ones keeping people interested as they check-in and out of my daily articles. To me, they serve entirely different purposes and are both important.
  3. No one is reading the Cantonese themed articles. Which is expected and part of the plan (so not really a lesson learned, oops). This was just a quick introduction. Moving forward, I have an exciting new project to introduce famous Cantonese metaphors to English-speaking writers as a creativity booster. Stay tuned!

Goals review

Want to know how well I fulfilled my goals last month?

  1. Build a better routine for writing. I have not missed a single day of publishing since August 14 🎊! This is huge!!! It usually takes me a lot longer to hook on to a habit. I have a draft in the works detailing my new routine — hopefully this will motivate and inspire other aspiring writers!
  2. Monetary goal (simple goal: 7.14; reach goal: 10.00): Checking on August 31st, and I’ve earned $8.30! I definitely reached my simple goal; and fell short for my reach goal. This is still pretty exciting though, because what I’m earning is essentially sustaining my Medium subscription, which is what I wanted.
  3. Submit one article to a publication: I did! My article on how to get over the procrastination hump is now housed in The Innovation, so thank you to Esat Artug for inviting me to be a writer. I am also now placing all of my articles under my own publication, The Brain is a Noodle because it’s so much easier to organize and find past articles. Hop on over and check it out! I’ll be opening up for submissions for poetry and poetry challenges soon, so stay tuned!

Next steps!

  1. Build a community of Medium writers under the #MediumPoetry and #MediumWriters tag: I am committing to supporting other Medium poets and writers! For the month of September, I will be spotlighting Medium Poetry and Medium Writers who tweet under the above two tags by retweeting to my twitter audience of 2k (almost 2.1k if you want to join & connect)! I can’t wait to see all of your tweets and articles!
  2. Monetary goal: Simple goal: 9.00; reach goal: 15.00
  3. Publication goal: Build a routine to submit one piece of poetry and one short article per week to another publication.

Lucy (The Egg Girl) is ready to retweet your articles under the #MediumPoetry and #MediumWriters tag so hop on that quick! She can’t wait to meet new writers on this journey 😋 She also still can’t believe she could bake a cake with mayonnaise in it and have the cake come out like a real, edible cake, that’s just magic, yknow?
