What I learned from earning $1.70 on Medium in my first month

Let’s start out with what $1.70 means to me.
$1.70 USD is actually $2.31CAD, probably enough for an off-brand chocolate bar at the dollar store.
$1.70 is 34% of my medium subscription, and my first month was free, so I’ve already earned something extra there.
I learned that what I valued in writing is that it’s an outlet for never-ending internal monologue with the ends of these yarn threads knitted nicely into one warm, snuggly fitted sweater.
I learned that I like to break the mould: break the writing conventions break the idea conventions that make some of these articles the same thoughts, reiterated using the same tone, words, structure, different order.
I learned that not enough people were writing for people like me, and as a reader I thirsted for content that describes the experiences of the minority.
I am here for that, and ready to fill those gaps; ready to renew age-old wisdoms applicable to a wider audience.
I met a community of kind, supportive writers. Amy Marley Suzanne V. Tanner Aimée Gramblin Charlotte Zobeir Ali Tim Ebl
I learned that I valued reading their perspectives, their experiences, hearing their story unfold in their writing, far more than I wanted to read the generic, popular articles recommended to me.
To me, the unique experiences of specific individuals, written to connect with the reader are far more powerful than generic advice made to be one-size-fits-all turning out to not quite fit anyone at all.
And I hope to continue reading these stories focussed on sharing unique experiences rather than sweeping generalities, connecting with an ever-growing, supportive community of writers.
That’s why I am here.
What about you?
Lucy (the egg girl) celebrated her one-month anniversary on Medium on July 1st, 2020, Canada Day. Here’s to many more months, maybe years of writing!
