How to Remove 5 Barriers to Serenity and Joy Methodically
How to maintain sustainable calmness and constant bliss despite circumstances without dependency on the external world

Two Critical Mental States for Health and Happiness
A striking observation I’ve made while studying the lives of successful people and centenarians was the consistent presence of serenity and joy. These people exude a remarkable sense of calmness and experience moments of joy throughout the day and night.
Serenity is a powerful stress and anxiety reducer. In contrast, joy is a potent source of energy and vitality. Interestingly, when I lacked these traits in my younger years, I was unhappy, unhealthy, and dissatisfied.
When these two concepts entered my life as habits, I experienced a tremendous shift making me healthier, happier, and more satisfied.
Therefore, I want to shed light on the factors that hinder us from experiencing these exquisite emotions and offer practical steps and tips to consistently enjoy these two states of mind, regardless of external circumstances.
The primary culprit or excuse I identified was the perpetual busyness that pervades our lives. However, let us remember that being busy does not necessarily equate to productivity and does not guarantee the desired outcomes for health and wealth.
While everyone aspires to lead a life filled with happiness, health, and fulfillment, only some accomplish these goals. Without prioritizing our health and wellness, attaining serenity and joy becomes arduous, as our bodies and minds cannot find ease in disease.
The prevailing healthcare model prioritizes disease management rather than cultivating holistic health. Governments and private sectors mainly allocate resources towards addressing illnesses once they have manifested while investing limited funds in preventive measures and enhancing overall well-being, wellness, and happiness.
Conscientious thought leaders and the public raise legitimate concerns and advocate for a transformative shift in this paradigm. Both healthcare providers and patients are dissatisfied with the current model, which perpetuates a lose-lose situation.
Given the abundance of resources available to us and the remarkable advancements in science and technology, it is imperative to strive for a win-win scenario that addresses the shortcomings of the existing system and fosters proactive health, well-being, and contentment for the public.
Although this change cannot occur soon due to complications of the healthcare systems globally, we can realize this paramount objective with elevated awareness, collective consciousness, and collaborative efforts. However, this achievement might extend beyond the scope of our lifetimes.
In this post, advocating proactive and holistic health, my focus is elevated awareness by taking personal responsibility for our health and wellness, focusing on two vital mental states (serenity and joy) that can make us healthier and happier.
Even though I studied these concepts in scientific settings, in this story, I explain them with everyday language to make this a practical and valuable piece for my readers.
My goal is to motivate and inspire you to add joy and serenity into your life, allowing you to experience remarkable health and wellness benefits that many people, including myself, have enjoyed.
An Overview of Serenity and Joy
Joy and serenity are associated with hedonic and eudaimonic motives, two distinct perspectives on well-being and happiness. Joy can be mapped to hedonic and serenity to eudaimonic tendency.
Hedonic motives are primarily concerned with maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain. Eudaimonic motives center around personal growth, meaning, and pursuing a life with purpose and fulfillment.
Serenity
During my research, I noticed that tranquility, calmness, peacefulness, stillness, quietude, harmony, composure, repose, and contentment are interconnected states that contribute to an overall sense of inner peace and well-being.
Tranquility is a state of calmness and peace.
Calmness signifies freedom from agitation, tension, or stress.
Peacefulness entails a state of internal and external harmony.
Stillness is a quiet state with minimal movement or external activity.
Quietude is serenity through silence and the reduction of external stimuli.
Harmony is a state of balance, coherence, and unity.
Composure is maintaining a calm demeanor, particularly in challenging situations.
Repose is a state of rest, relaxation, and release from tension.
Contentment is satisfaction and fulfillment characterized by a sense of peace, acceptance, and gratitude.
Learning the antonyms of serenity to appreciate this wonderful feeling will be helpful.
The opposite feelings of serenity are turbulence, unrest, chaos, instability, agitation, restlessness, irritability, anxiety, tension, uneasiness, disturbance, dissatisfaction, discord, and frustration.
Joy
The hedonic theory emphasizes the importance of experiencing positive emotions like joy as critical to leading a satisfying and fulfilling life. Understanding the antonyms and synonyms of joy can clarify its meaning.
The opposite feelings of joy are sadness, anguish, despair, hopelessness, disappointment, boredom, envy, apathy, numbness, emptiness, melancholy, grief, annoyance, resentment, hostility, and dissatisfaction.
Joy is synonymous with feelings of happiness, pleasure, delight, bliss, elation, jubilation, ecstasy, rapture, euphoria, and exhilaration caused by our optimized hormones and neurotransmitters.
These terms reflect similar feelings but differ in intensity and release of different biochemicals. We may all have different definitions, but I compiled standard definitions to give you an idea.
Happiness is a generic term describing well-being and positive emotions.
Pleasure is the satisfaction from activities or experiences that bring joy.
Delight is a great pleasure from things that brings joy and gratification.
Bliss is an intense state of complete happiness and serenity associated with a sense of transcendence.
Elation is a feeling of extreme happiness and excitement, typically accompanied by a sense of uplifted spirits.
Jubilation is a feeling of triumphant joy marked by vitality and celebration.
Ecstasy, rapture, and euphoria are overwhelming and intense states of joy, delight, and bliss, accompanied by a heightened sense of awareness. They are associated with a feeling of being transported or enraptured by intense joy or beauty.
Exhilaration is a feeling of refreshing excitement and enthusiasm experienced in moments of thrilling or exhilarating experiences usually associated with an adrenalin rush.
5 Reasons We Might Miss Serenity and Joy
In this section, I briefly explain five reasons and how they affect serenity and joy and provide practical tips to address them.
1 —Not honoring the fundamental needs of the body.
I start with this obvious and most impactful one for serenity and joy. It is about neglecting the fundamental requirements of our body.
Even though everyone knows we must eat nutritious food, consume adequate calories, get nightly restorative sleep, move the body regularly, rest, recover, have fun, and refrain from toxins and addictive substances, many people miss these critical points.
Because of the neglect of these fundamentals, millions have sleep deprivation, sedentary life, dysfunctional hormones, excessive stress, nutritional deficiencies, excessive calories turning to visceral fat, causing obesity, and leading metabolic and mental health disorders.
A combination of these poor habits causing chronic disorders and makes millions of people sick and unhappy. Let’s remember that lack of disease indicates ease that can allow us to taste serenity and joy sustainably.
Viable Solutions
Have a balanced life with good nutrition, adequate calories, restorative sleep, regular exercise, rest, and timely recovery.
2 — Not stimulating and resting the brain and mind.
When we don’t adequately stimulate and rest the brain and mind, it can adversely affect tranquility and joy. The brain needs four types of workouts and three types of rest.
Constantly subjecting our brain and mind to excessive stimulation without sufficient rest can lead to mental exhaustion and overwhelm. Not stimulating it enough can stop its growth, like decreasing BDNF and encouraging it to shrink.
Cognitive fatigue starts when the brain continuously engages in demanding mental tasks without adequate breaks. Fatigue can also happen when it is not stimulated enough. Then we experienced impaired cognitive abilities.
When the mind is constantly engaged in racing thoughts, rumination, or excessive negative self-talk, it can create inner turmoil. When it is not stimulated, it experiences stagnation and boredom. Thus, both extreme situations can prevent the experience of tranquility and joy.
Viable Solutions
Balance stimulating the brain with meaningful activities and providing adequate rest and rejuvenation.
Practice mindfulness, meditate, work in a flow state, have fun, sing, hum, and laugh. Improve your attention, focus, intuition, and working memory.
Take regular breaks, try muscle relaxation and slow/deep breathing.
3 — Pessimistic attitude, fixed mindset, perfectionism, cognitive distortions, and cognitive rigidity
A pessimistic attitude, fixed mindset, cognitive distortions, cognitive rigidity, and perfectionistic tendencies can adversely impact tranquility and joy. I will briefly unfold their effects for your understanding.
Unlike an optimistic attitude, a pessimistic attitude consistently expects adverse outcomes and views situations negatively. This mindset can lead to excessive worry, anxiety, and a lack of contentment.
Unlike optimists, pessimists tend to magnify problems, making them appear larger and more overwhelming than they actually are. This constant focus on the negative aspects can hinder the ability to experience tranquility and dampen the enjoyment of joyful moments.
Pessimism diminishes resilience (the ability to bounce back from setbacks). This can lead to experiencing excessive unpleasant emotions, reduced motivation, and diminishing joy and tranquility.
A fixed mindset is the belief that abilities, intelligence, and characteristics are fixed traits that cannot be changed or developed. With a fixed mindset, there is a fear of failure and a tendency to avoid tasks that may challenge our perceived abilities.
Perfectionism is setting excessively high standards, being overly critical of our performance, and expecting too much from others. This mindset can lead to chronic stress, self-doubt, broken relationships, and a lack of contentment.
Perfectionists have an intense fear of failure and judgment, which can create anxiety and self-imposed pressure. This fear can prevent them from enjoying the present moment and experiencing tranquility and joy.
Cognitive rigidity can make it formidable to adjust to new situations or circumstances. This can lead to anxiety, stress, depression, and even suicidal thoughts in extreme cases.
Cognitive distortions are inaccurate and irrational thoughts and beliefs. They can interfere with our perception of reality and influence our emotions, judgments, and behaviors. These automatic thoughts come from your unconscious mind, coded as emotional memories.
Cognitive distortions might manifest as unfavorable self-talk leading to low esteem, worthlessness, anxiety, fear, frustration, anger, envy, depression, guilt, and shame, causing physical and mental disorders.
The fear of failure can limit the opportunities for experiencing joy and tranquility that come with overcoming challenges. Learning to let go is critical to taste true joy and serenity, as advised by a 102-year-old medical doctor who advocated holistic health.
Viable Solutions
Gain a growth mindset.
Avoid pessimism but stay optimistic in realistic boundaries.
Avoid perfection and have a realistic and pragmatic approach to life.
Learn to let go and enjoy every moment with ups and downs.
4 — Living in a comfort or danger zone
As two extremes, laziness and overstimulation can put us in an unfavorable position. Living exclusively in a comfort or danger zone can adversely affect serenity and joy in life.
The comfort zone is a state of familiarity, routine, and minimal challenge. It might offer a sense of security, but staying exclusively within the comfort zone can hinder personal growth, limit new experiences, and restrict the experience of joy and serenity.
The danger zone is a state of constant stress, excessive and uncalculated risk-taking, and exposure to harmful situations. Continuously living in a danger zone can lead to chronic stress and anxiety, hindering serenity and joy.
Striving for a balanced approach in the stretch and risk zones allows for enjoying bliss and tranquility.
Viable Solutions
Stay out of your comfort zone.
Choose stretch and risk zones for our growth and tasting joy and tranquility in a balance.
Raise your adversity quotient, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulations.
5 — Loneliness (not nurturing relationships, not connecting meaningfully with others, and avoiding psychological boundaries).
Healthy relationships are essential for our well-being, but harmful ones can be traumatic. Isolating ourselves and living lonely deprives us of the joy that human connection brings.
Constant conflict with others amplifies stress and anxiety and can lead to depression, burnout, and trauma. Failing to nurture relationships, form meaningful connections, and establish psychological boundaries can adversely affect our tranquility and joy.
When we fail to prioritize and maintain meaningful connections, we experience social isolation, leading to loneliness, reduced emotional support, and diminished joy that comes from genuine bonds.
Superficial connections might also hinder tranquility and joy. They prevent us from experiencing deep, meaningful relationships. This lack of authenticity deprives us of the joy of truly connecting with others.
Inadequate emotional intimacy might reduce the quality of life. Meaningful connections require a level of emotional intimacy and vulnerability.
Establishing psychological and emotional boundaries is vital for well-being. Without setting boundaries, we absorb the emotional burdens of others, leading to emotional exhaustion and a decreased capacity to find tranquility and joy in our own lives.
When personal boundaries are absent, we may feel overwhelmed, resentful, or uncomfortable in our interactions with others. These negative emotions inhibit our experience of serenity and joy.
Viable Solutions
Spend time and effort in creating meaningful connections with loved ones.
Engage in deep conversations with open and honest communication
Offer support to create robust social support groups.
Set psychological and emotional boundaries to protect your well-being.
Say no when necessary, communicate your needs, and ensure a healthy balance between giving and receiving support.
Live with gratitude and show compassion and act of kindness to others.
Conclusions and Takeaways
Prosperous, healthy, and happy people consistently embody serenity and joy, experiencing moments of calmness and happiness throughout their lives. Unhealthy people experience the opposite feelings of serenity and joy.
Serenity is a powerful reducer of stress and anxiety, while joy is a source of energy and vitality. Without these qualities, we may experience unhappiness, poor health, and dissatisfaction.
A significant transformation can occur by including serenity and joy as habits, improving well-being and satisfaction.
However, the pervasive busyness of modern life can hinder the experience of these emotions, despite not guaranteeing productivity or desired outcomes for health and wealth.
People experiencing poor health have valid concerns about the inadequacies of healthcare systems worldwide, which primarily emphasize treating illness rather than promoting overall well-being.
However, transforming such a complex system will require a considerable amount of time and effort, potentially extending beyond the duration of our own lives.
Yet, without being dependent on circumstances and external factors like healthcare, we can take personal responsibility to add serenity and joy to our lives which might keep us healthier and happier.
Of course, there is no guarantee in life for anything as, despite our best effort, we might still become unwell and lose balance. Therefore, seeking timely help from loved ones and professionals is always essential.
In my experience, desirable euphoria and unbearable anhedonia are contrasting emotions, as I have experienced both. Euphoria embraces life, while anhedonia rejects it. One reflects the class of happy and other unhappy cells in our bodies.
I provided five natural ways to feel euphoria anytime and anywhere at your will. I also introduced six psychological practices for achieving tranquility amidst inner turmoil.
Living with serenity and joy made me healthier, happier, and wealthier. Therefore, I encourage my readers to make these concepts, habits, and lifestyle choices and pass these practices to their loved ones.
Thank you for reading my perspectives. I wish you a healthy and happy life.
