Reality Check
Turn Setbacks into Comebacks: A Realistic Perspective on Success
Failing at a goal is not a dead end, and there are ways to turn failure into success if you’re willing to explore and implement them.

This short story gives you a quick perspective on how I turned setbacks into comebacks with a growth mindset and optimistic approach to life. I linked a few previous stories for interested readers in detail.
I spent 40 years in my career, starting from the bottom and reaching the top with hard work. During this process, I faced significant setbacks and made remarkable progress with my work ethic, but I also made many mistakes and failed some of my goals.
Fortunately, I learned to reframe failure as a lesson that contributed to my success. Therefore, failure never bothered me and did not derail my path to success.
We’ve all faced setbacks where we set a goal with passion and drive, only to fall short and feel like a failure. It’s a universal experience that can take on various forms.
In fact, it’s often those who are considered successful and accomplished who have faced the most failures, yet they have learned to turn them into opportunities for growth and progress.
Whether it’s a personal goal, a professional goal or a goal related to our health and wellness, the disappointment of not achieving it can be crushing.
Failing at a goal is not the end of the world. It’s a natural part of the process of achieving success.
In 2008, I set a goal to write an academic paper for my research based on a patent I had filed. After rigorous reviews by my academic peers and some distinguished professors, I submitted it to a peer-reviewed journal in my field.
Unfortunately, the journal rejected it, citing that the information was too controversial and far-fetched, despite praising the idea as novel. The invention produced multi-million dollars for the sponsor of the patent.
Initially, this rejection was incredibly discouraging. I felt awful for several days and even considered quitting writing for academia altogether.
The disappointment of my valuable concept, which contributed to the body of knowledge in emerging technologies, was not acknowledged by traditional academics entrenched in their ivory towers.
But, I was fortunate enough to have mentors who helped me regain perspective and encouraged me to keep working smarter. They gave me fantastic ideas to work on, and eventually, one of my initiatives paid off.
A client approached me to write the rejected paper as an e-book and put the name of their CTO on it. They offered me $45,000 for the copyright and even provided me with additional paid work, which became my second income. They still work with me to this day.
My mentors, Henry and Janine, distinguished psychiatrists, pointed out that this rejection was a blessing in disguise.
The journal I had submitted the paper to only accepted free content and did not pay its contributors but charged readers $50 per article or $3,000 for an organizational subscription.
This experience taught me that, sometimes, the road to success is not a straight path and that rejection can lead to unexpected opportunities. Ultimately, I was grateful that the journal rejected my paper.
I encourage you to remember that failing to achieve a goal is not the end of the world. It’s a natural part of the process of achieving success.
Failing to achieve a goal can offer valuable insights. For instance, if a weight-loss goal is not met, it may reveal a need for a better knowledge, discipline, or lifestyle adjustments. These lessons can assist in setting realistic goals and improving future success chances.
The best contributors to my success were using a reality check, remaining optimistic, tolerating negative criticism, refraining from perfection, living mindfully, setting boundaries, working in a flow state, sharpening my skills, keeping my brain active, working well with others showing empathy and compassion, paying attention to my health, enjoying my hobbies, and staying calm and composed amidst crises.
When you fail at a goal, it’s essential to reflect on what went wrong and identify areas for improvement. You should also set a new goal and create a plan for achieving it. Seek support from mentors and friends, and most importantly, don’t give up. Keep going to achieve your goals with optimism.
An essential benefit of experiencing setbacks is the development of resilience and an increased adversity quotient (AQ). Resilience is the capacity to recover from challenges and persists in adversity.
When faced with failure, we learn to manage disappointment and persist in pursuing our goals. This builds resilience and enhances our ability to attain success in the future.
Another aspect to consider when failing to achieve a goal is the opportunity for flexibility. Goals and circumstances can shift, rendering a previously set goal unattainable. This will increase your cognitive flexibility and emotional maturity.
In such instances, adapting and modifying one’s approach becomes crucial. Failure can be a valuable teacher, as it can foster flexibility and openness to new methods and ideas in goal attainment.
Feeling disappointed and discouraged when we fail at achieving a goal is normal. But it’s important to remember that failure is a natural part of achieving success.
Studies indicate that successful people fail more often than less successful people. Some studies found that successful entrepreneurs failed multiple times before achieving success.
Forbes informs 90% of startups fail. Bloomberg highlights that failed entrepreneurs find more success the second time.
When we fail at a goal, it’s easy to fall into a negative mindset, doubt ourselves and our abilities, and feel like giving up.
But this kind of mindset will only hold us back from achieving our goals in the future. Instead, we need to reframe our failure and see it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Setbacks are a natural part of the journey to success. Reflect on what went wrong, identify areas for improvement, and set a new goal with a plan for achieving it.
Surround yourself with positivity, seek guidance from mentors, celebrate small wins, and learn from others’ failures. Keep things in perspective, believe in yourself, and don’t give up.
Failure is not a final destination but an opportunity to learn, grow, and become a better version of ourselves. Remember, when faced with setbacks, to rise above and keep moving forward.
Here are practical tips, including the viable ways to use your physical and psychological capacities and to stay motivated after failing at a goal:
1 — Reflect on what went wrong and identify areas for improvement.
2 — Set a new goal and create a plan for achieving it.
3 — Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who believe in you.
4 — Don’t be afraid to seek help from a coach, mentor, or teacher.
5 — Live mindfully and practice self-compassion and be kind to others.
6 — Celebrate small wins along the way and collaborate with others.
7 — Learn from other people’s failures and successes.
8 — Keep things in perspective, remembering that failure is a natural process and not as bad as it is perceived.
9 — Stay optimistic within realistic boundaries with a growth mindset, always believe in yourself and your abilities, and sharpen your skills.
10 — Don’t give up your mission and strategy. Keep going by changing your tactics during crises.
Failing to reach your goals can be a frustrating and disheartening experience, but it is not the end of the world. Failure can be a valuable learning opportunity that can help you succeed in the long run.
Setbacks are not exclusive to you and don’t determine your success. They can be a valuable learning opportunity that leads to long-term success. Failure can teach valuable lessons about oneself, build resilience, and foster flexibility.
The key to turning failure into success is to embrace it, not exaggerate it, learn from errors, establish realistic goals, take action, seek support, and celebrate successes.
By making these tips part of your daily routine, you can reap the long-term benefits and grow by creating new neural pathways and cognitive reserves.
