Ten Interesting Facts About Cats You Probably Need to Know
How much do you know about your feline partner?

As I have a cat named Mini, I know how interesting cats can be. They are very unpredictable yet adorable animals. And they can fill the void inside your house and truly enhance your happiness. Like dogs, they can be your great friends.
But how much do we know about our lovely furry friends? Not much, I guess. That’s why in this post, I will share a few things that you probably didn’t know about cats.
So, let’s get the ball rolling!
1. Cats can sleep up to 70 % of their life
Yes, that’s right. It may seem strange, but a cat spends two-third of its life just sleeping. Cats can sleep for 13–16 hours per day. You may wonder why do cats sleep that much!!
As cats are great hunters, they sleep all day long to preserve their energy for hunting at night. It’s in their genes. So, don’t worry if you see your domestic cat is sleeping most of its time.
2. Cats cannot taste sweetness
Believe it or not — it’s true. Even sometimes, you see them eating sweet foods but in reality, they cannot taste sweetness as they lack the test buds that are necessary to detect sweet flavors.
According to the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, cats don’t have the Tas1r2 mammalian gene that makes the sugar-detecting protein. It’s weird, right?
3. Cats spend about 30 to 50% of their day on grooming purpose
It’s so adorable when they do so. Cats spend about 30 to 50% of their day on grooming purposes. There are several reasons for this behavior. It helps cats tone down their scent so they can avoid predators. It also cools them down and increases blood circulation.
4. Cats have a unique nose print like a man’s fingerprint
Cats have their own unique nose print which is similar to our fingerprint. It’s a unique identification of the cat that is an important issue for cat insurance and cat owners.
5. Cats meow only for humans
Isn’t it a really interesting fact? Cats produce “meow” sound only to communicate with humans. And if you are wondering — wild cats don’t say meow. My cat Mini does this almost all the time when she is hungry or in the mood of claiming my laptop. Hahaha!
6. Cats can rotate their ears 180 degrees
This is another interesting thing. Cats have 32 muscles in the ears that allow them to rotate their ears up to 180 degrees. They can move them independently from each other. It helps them to be aware of everything around them.
7. Cats have the ability to jump seven times their own height
My cat loves to jump while playing with ping pong balls. I through the ball in the air and she jumps to catch it (just like dogs do). And you know, without a running start, cats can jump a vertical height of five feet or more, which is roughly seven times their own height. Isn’t that incredible??
8. Cats don’t like human music
Domestic cats don’t enjoy the music because of its loudness. They have very sensitive ears than humans. Also, they are not adjustable to human music, and sometimes it causes fear among them. But I don’t know why my cat Mini loves to play with my wireless speaker.
9. Domestic cats can run very fast
This will surely blow your mind!!! You know, a household cat can run faster than Usain bolt. Yes, they can run up to 48 kilometers per hour whereas the famous Usain Bolt can run up to 37.58 kilometers per hour.
10. Black cats bring Good luck in the UK and Japan
Black cats are considered as a sign of future success in the United Kingdom and the new brides are given black cats to bless their marriage.
Again, the Japanese think that black cat brings good fortune for unmarried women in Japan. They also believed that cats have the ability to transform into super-spirits after death.
Cats are truly amazing with their countless interesting attributes. I have adopted a cat in February 2021 and now, that cat has become an inseparable part of my life. Not only me but also my whole family have fallen in love with my cute cat Mini.
