The Reasons Why Your Cats Roll In The Dirt

Mini looks so adorable when she does the rolling.

Some of you may already know that I adopted a cute little cat just to do an experiment. But surprisingly, that tiny little fellow is now a crucial part of my life. My cat, Mini, has become a family member, the cutest and the most adorable one. My mother, who was totally against adopting a cat, is now completely in love with Mini. You may wonder, how did all that happen? The answer lies in the very nature of a cat.

Cats are very individualistic and unpredictable animals. They do what they want and can completely ignore you at times. Despite all your attempts, you cannot fully domesticate your cat, and that’s the part that I like the most.

They have so many weird behaviors that may leave you surprised and one of them is rolling in the dirt. When you take your cats outside, they can immediately start rolling in the dirt, ignoring your commands or requests. Well, when my cat Mini did that, I was really surprised and thought there is something wrong with it. Then I wondered why do cats do it and after some research, I found my answers.

So, let’s explore the most common reasons why your cats roll in the dirt.

Why Your Cats Roll In The Dirt

When I gave a serious thought about Mini’s rolling habit, I found out that there are a few common reasons for it.

Generally, cats do roll in the dirt or floor to seek your attention. They can also do that to cool down their body temperature, or it can be a sign that your cat is in discomfort. It is one of the ways to mark their territory. However, it can be a sign that your car is in heat. That means it needs a mating partner right now.

Hey, look at me!

Well, cats are great attention seekers. I hope you’ve experienced it countless time that when you work with your laptop, your cat comes out of nowhere and sit on the keyboard and you’re done. My cat, Mini, does this like every day. The point I am trying to make is your cat can roll in the dirt or floor simply to seek your attention.

Maybe your furry fellow wants to play with you or spend some quality time. So, as a cat owner, you must pay attention to your cat when it takes over your laptop or just start rolling to seek your attention.

It’s too hot. Where is my AC!

Your feline friend’s ideal body temperature should be within 100.4º to 102.5º Fahrenheit. But during summer, it may rise due to the hot and humid weather. So, if you see your cat rolling in the dirt of your backyard on a hot summer day, it can be a sign that it’s trying to adjust its body temperature. That means your little friend is just trying to cool down by rolling over the moist and cool dust.

In that case, you can take your cat to the comparatively cool place of your house or set a fan or cooler to make it comfortable.

This place is mine!

Cats claim their area by licking and spreading scents. They have glands on top of their heads, paw pads, tales, cheeks. And yes, that’s why your cat loves to lick your fingers, hands, legs, even face. They let others know that you are already taken. Anyway, rolling is one of the ways for them to mark their territory. By doing so, they claim their area and establish their dominance.

I need a partner, please.

Rolling left and right excessively is an obvious sign that your cat is in heat and needs a partner for mating. Your feline friend does that to entice a partner. But it’s not the only sign of being in heat. When your cat is in heat, it also shows other signs, including restlessness, constant moaning, unusual tail movements, desperation to go outside, etc.

So, before coming to a conclusion about your cat’s rolling behavior, you need to observe your cat’s overall behavior being very attentive.

I’m high on catnip!

There are tons of videos online where cats get high on catnip, and then they start rolling in the dirt or floor. For those who don’t know what catnip is — it’s a plant, Nepeta cataria, that produces a chemical called nepetalactone.

When your cat sniffs or eats catnip leaves, it can start rolling in the dirt, being high and relaxed. Though it has no harmful impacts on cats, I don’t recommend this at all. And remember, if your cat eats much catnip, its tummy may get upset. So, be careful.
