Stubborn Travel: March Newsletter
Medium’s Pub Crawl day, a warm welcome to new writers, and a reminder on submission guidelines
Medium Pub Crawl: March 19th, 2024
Tomorrow, March 19th 2024, will see Medium’s first ever Pub Crawl. If you’re looking for a home for your writing, this is the time to learn what publications are accepting submissions, what they look for, and how to submit stories.
You should be able to explore a virtual expo hall of booths, where you can learn about different publications.
I’m delighted to say that Stubborn Travel will be there for a speed networking session at 12 noon Eastern Time. I’ll also be at the virtual booth and available to chat with writers from 3–5:30pm Eastern Time.
If you’ve got travel stories, I’d love to virtually meet you!
A bit from Medium on Pub Crawl Day:
Our goal is to connect publications editors and writers who write on Medium. Writers will walk away from Pub Crawl with more insight into their favorite publications and exposure to new ones. Writers and editors will also have opportunities to participate in speed networking.
Join us on Tuesday, March 19, kicking off at 11 a.m. ET with Tony’s keynote. The virtual expo hall will be open for 24 hours, so no matter your time zone, you can participate. Publication editors will be hosting virtual office hours throughout the day, so check the booths to find out when you can hop in and chat live with an editor.
New writers, welcome!
I am so happy to welcome some great new writers to the pub, and was so excited to see some really incredible, unique stories this month.
- For an intrepid journey to one of California’s arid deserts, I highly recommend Christina R.’s recounting of her trip to the Domelands. Honestly, the language is so rich and beautiful, you’ll feel the dryness of the air and the relief of the shade. There are also some tips on tackling similar journeys yourself, should you wish to follow in her footsteps.
- Music doctorate y kendall brings three gorgeous stories to the table as she sets out to discover three ancient theatrical Japanese genres: Noh, Bunraku and Kabuki. You can watch the dramas through her eyes while learning an incredible amount on Japan in her stories.
- Although not a new writer, it’s always great to see stories from American expat Annie Kocher. In Six Reasons to Love Finland, Annie celebrates her 30th birthday in Finland, providing an uplifting and fun insight into what we can expect from Helsinki and beyond.
- And last but certainly not least, accidental expat (oh, how I relate!) Irina Neacsu takes us through a picturesque and thoughtful voyage around Santorini, where she ponders the impact of tourism. As visitors, ‘we must take responsibility for our actions even if we aren’t around long enough to witness and experience the consequences,’ she reminds us.
I absolutely loved these stories. If you do as well, please let the writers know by clapping, commenting and following — some of them are new to Medium, and it can take a while to feel the love. But these stories absolutely deserve some!
Submission Guidelines
A reminder that submission guidelines can be found below if you’re interested in writing for us. I’ve had a lot of applications recently, so I’ve been a little slow in getting back to people. I am getting there, though!
That said, some I have actively not responded to because their entries go against the guidelines. Please ensure you review them before submitting to avoid this happening.
A note on A.I. content
In particular, I’ve received an increase of A.I.-generated stories, and honestly — you can tell which they are from a mile away. I don’t mind if you use A.I. for brainstorming words or checking your grammar, but if it’s had a heavy hand in your writing, I will be able to tell and I will immediately skip it.
In addition to being against the whole point of Stubborn Travel, A.I.-generated content goes against Medium’s Guidelines, and it’s also just bad marketing. So many tests have been done that confirm that A.I.-written content simply does not perform or engage people. Google’s latest updates mean that this type of content will actively be penalised in search rankings.
Ask yourself why you write on Medium. If it’s to make money, rest assured that people will not spend time on your story as soon as they pick up that it’s written by ChatGPT (usually within the first paragraph). If it’s to improve your writing and marketing skills, over-relying on A.I. will not help. If it’s to build a following, what kind of audience will you build with generic content?
Anyway, rant over! Unless you like rants on A.I., in which case I recommend a piece I wrote a while back:
That’s it for now. If you have any questions, drop them in the comments or make sure to pop by for Pub Crawl day tomorrow. And as always, happy travels!
