Every business strives for the return on investment (ROI) to survive and thrive. Smart investment is a crucial part and critical success factor for every business venture. Business ventures use ROI, which depicts a ratio between net profit and the cost of investment. We know that a high ROI equates the investment’s value (gain) comparing favorably to the incurred cost.

Every business use ROI as a metric to measure time and money invested in a business initiative to decide whether or not to undertake an investment. The decisions must be prioritized, and the risk factors must be identified and mitigated.

Related to ROI, I want to extend the topic and introduce the concept of SROI (social return on investment) for your consideration. SROI includes social value gains beyond tangible financial returns. These values could be environmental, sustainability, other social values such as trust, branding, quality of life, consumer satisfaction, societal implications. We can consider these societal values as intangible returns.

How do ROI & SROI relate to writing practice?

As writers and content developers, we need to consider ROI and SROI in our writing strategy and plan. Most of us see writing as a business practice. This view can provide additional motivation for creating bigger value. This notion may be one of the reasons Medium encourages writers to put their content behind the paywall. Even though the returns are negligible for many writers, this can still be a motivating factor at least covering the cost of the subscription fee for reading.

How can we invest as part of our content strategy?

As writers, we invest our time, resources, and money.

Our time can include activities such as planning and researching our topic, writing our content, publishing and promoting. In terms of resources, we need a writing device laptop, desktop, tablet, or a smartphone with word-processing. We also need a platform.

As far as money concerned, we invest in Medium a $5 subscription fee. This $5 investment gives us a fantastic return on our investment. This negligible investment gives us a fully functioning and automated content development platform, including the fundamental publishing requirements such as a workflow system.

The return on investment on Medium is unique and compelling for writers like us. I know the fact that we don’t earn much from our content, but we have the opportunity and potential to grow. Besides, the ecosystem provides us with an opportunity to connect with thousands of readers and writers. This opportunity constitutes a lucrative investment for writers who want to reach out to an abundant source of knowledge and connections.

We need to recognize this potential, be mindful and grateful for the opportunity, and leverage the capabilities of our content platform.

Publishing our articles on Medium and ILLUMINATION is free, so we don’t need any monetary investment. It is an excellent relief for writers that Medium and ILLUMINATION mitigate our investment risk by offering free services. However, we need to invest our time.

While Medium is the underlying platform, let’s consider ILLUMINATION as a return accelerator for our investment. To leverage this accelerator, we must collaborate, and create fusion and synergy through diversity and serendipity as discussed related to our core values in the attached article.

Investment in collaboration can provide immediate or potential returns based on our creative engagements. We need to take personal responsibility and accountability to promote our content by leveraging fantastic opportunities of Medium platform, which can be accelerated by ILLUMINATION tool.

The platform and the ecosystem allow both ROI and SROI. What value proposition could be better than this? It is time to leverage inherent capabilities for content development, marketing, and monetizing.

As mentioned before, we need to invest a little time in reading, writing, commenting, highlighting, clapping, sharing, and connecting with other writers on ILLUMINATION and other publications.

It can be compelling to look at Medium with fresh eyes. Yes, we experience some system glitches and minor issues on Medium, but this is an excellent platform for writers. Instead of taking it for granted, let’s leverage the inherent capabilities and value propositions. We are part of this ecosystem, and our contributions can make our ecosystem more reliable, more resilient, and more prominent.

We can use ROI and SROI creatively to manifest our goals as tangible returns. I encourage our writers to think like entrepreneurs. You can create articles to link to your business ventures or altruistic endeavors. As long as we do it appropriately and act professionally without being spammy, it is a viable proposition for all of us. Smart promotion is part of our growth strategy.

Keep promoting yourself, your values, your significant messages, and your content. Your promotion is an important investment for return.

10 — Let’s spark innovative collaboration by taking full responsibility and accountability for our growth.
