Quickie: The Real Reason Your Partner Loves Chocolate So Much
And why your sex life may improve with every delicious bite

If advertising and mass media are any indicator, the only acceptable Valentine’s Day present to give a woman is flowers and chocolate. Although in the real world, that’s not necessarily the case, it is true that women have a reputation for loving chocolate, and turning to this candy of choice for delicious comfort in both good times and bad.
I know I’m guilty as charged. But according to researcher Anthony Auger, I have a good excuse for my crazy chocolate cravings.
My brain makes me do it!
Auger, who specializes in the brain differences between men and women, explains that women do indeed crave chocolate more than men and this tendency can be traced not only in humans, but also in female rats that have been observed acting on chocolate cravings more often than male rodents.

To further illustrate the connection between women’s brains and chocolate, a study found that after eating a lot of chocolate, women have less activity in their hypothalamus, which is associated with food intake. This means women are less likely to be hungry, and have lower motivation to eat more candy, after their chocolate cravings have been satisfied. In addition, activity in the amygdala is affected — suggesting chocolate can impact how women feel.
According to Auger, these findings may not only be related to people’s snacking habits, but also their sex lives.
“I’m intrigued because the amygdala not only regulates positive and negative emotions, but also sexual behavior and desire. So chocolate has a potential impact on those behaviors, although there are no direct data to prove that,” Auger explained. “But biologically, these differences could be underlying mechanisms to explain why men and women have different preferences, as well as behavioral and physiological responses to chocolate.”
