Quickie: The Communication Habits of Sexually Satisfied Couples
Honesty is the best policy when it comes to being happy in the bedroom

Sometimes it can be difficult to be honest with our partner about what we want in the bedroom…or even when having sexual conversations in general. However, honesty can be the best policy when it comes to getting sexual satisfaction — and it turns out that the more honest people are about sexual matters, the more sexual satisfaction they experience.
In fact, according to a survey of about 1,000 people conducted by Superdrug Online Doctor, when people are honest about their sexual satisfaction, they actually experience a higher level of satisfaction in the bedroom. For women, 89.1 percent who were honest about sex were satisfied in the bedroom, and 91.4 percent of honest men reported they were happy with their sex lives.
On the other hand, only 32.2 percent of men who were dishonest with their partner about sex reported being satisfied in the bedroom, and only 25.3 percent of fibbing women were happy with the quality of the sex they were having.
The Habits of Sexually Satisfied Couples
We all know there’s a lot more to being satisfied between the sheets than body parts — and people in the survey who were the most satisfied did most of the work outside of the bedroom. And what did it take for them to reach such high levels of happiness in their sex lives? During the study, these participants shared strategies that helped:
- Keeping an open mind about their partner’s sexual ideas (59.3 percent women; 63.1 percent men)
- Talking about their sex lives outside of the bedroom (55.5 percent women; 49.4 percent men)
- Discussing their physical insecurities (42.3 percent women; 34.3 percent men)
- Setting boundaries on sexual exploration (38 percent women; 30.8 percent men)
- Discussing their sexual insecurities (33 percent women; 29.1 percent men)
- Researching sexual acts they’d like to try with their partner (24.1 percent women; 25.6 percent men)
- Scheduling times to talk to their partner about sex (11.8 percent women; 15.1 percent men)
The blog post detailing the study summed up the results this way: “As the idiom often goes, ‘communication is key’ when it comes to having a successful relationship. That conventional wisdom, it appears, can also be applied to couples’ sex lives.”
