Photographs that wouldn’t be the same without their clouds
On preparing this photostory titled “Wow, these clouds!”…
… I realized that many photographs in open spaces wouldn’t be the same without the clouds in them. Let’s explore this with more examples.
This was shot last fall around Lac Leman, not far from where I live here in Switzerland. The fluffy clouds add a special touch to the sky, which would otherwise be perfect blue -also nice, but different… and in this case, I prefer the clouds, with sunlight reaching those trees laterally as this was very late in the evening.
One of my most celebrated pictures is this one of a mountain seen through a window of clouds:

That’s from my recent story on Adelboden and its wonderful waterfalls:
From the lead photo, this west-facing beach in Crete, Greece, is the perfect place to end the day:
Sometimes, clouds add nice touches to shots that are centered on something else:
And very high up in the mountains, clouds are ubiquitous -actually because often they literally get stuck in the mountains. See here in the Alps, first by the end of last fall and then in deep winter:
That last photo was shot during a great day of ski when the weather was better than forecasted, yet quite cloudy:
And just like I couldn't leave the Alps out of this short photostory, I coudl’t leave out this other shot of my beloved lake:
Not only nature photography can benefit from some nice clouds. Here you have hundreds of small clouds spread out over Venice:
And here you have the “cloudiest” day out of my whole trip to Santorini, Greece:
