Most Wanted: Articles and Lessons of May
What do readers want?
I want to tell you a little secret.
If I were to write for my own entertainment, I’d be spending my days writing Michael Jackson fan fiction. Actually, I already did and I loved every second of it. Now you know. I’m weird and quite shameless about it.
But here on Medium, I don’t write for myself. I write for you. I happen to enjoy it, but that’s a whole different story. The truth is I love it. Just not as much as steamy fan fiction.
You understand.
Because I write for the reader, it’s imperative to know what readers are interested in. What they spend time on, what titles draw their attention, what subjects make them click.
And for that, we have the much loved and detested stats.
I love them. Others detest them. I suppose I’m just not old enough on the site to hate them. I’m sure in time I’ll get there. No matter how we each feel about them, they are useful.
I decided to do a monthly top 3 of my best Medium stories for the previous month. And by best I mean the ones that earn the most. We still live in a world where we pay money for our bills.
When we pay something else I’ll do a top Most Creative or a Top Silliest. Until then, best means dollars.
I thought it would be a good learning experience for both myself and you. We find out what people like and we give them that. If we feel like it.
Simple, right?
Let’s do this.
First place:
Earnings: 15.77 $
Views: 512, of which 91% internal.
Second place:
Earnings: 14.66 $
Views: 365, of which 95% internal.
Third place:
Earnings: 13.33 $
Views: 388, of which 86% internal.
Lessons:
May was my second month on Medium. I consider it a success because I reached the Top 7% of writers who make over 100$ on Medium. And over 1400 followers. It brought me so much joy that I already shared with you.
You can read all about it here:
What are the lessons we can all learn from the 3 top stories?
- A top story from April also became a top story for May, which means it was a really good one.
- People are interested in the following. Success stories. Especially success stories on Medium. Personal stories. Raw truths. Being unapologetically yourself. Not giving up even when you fail.
- People care about you. Especially when you care about them.
Valuable lessons. I already see a pattern emerging. If it’s going to be like this every month it will be very easy to niche down to a few subjects that I already like.
