Most Wanted: Articles and Lessons of April
What do readers want?
I want to tell you a little secret.
If I were to write for my own entertainment, I’d be spending my days writing Michael Jackson fan fiction. Actually, I already did and I loved every second of it. Now you know. I’m weird and quite shameless about it.
But here on Medium, I don’t write for myself. I write for you. I happen to enjoy it, but that’s a whole different story. The truth is I love it. Just not as much as steamy fan fiction.
You understand.
Because I write for the reader, it’s imperative to know what readers are interested in. What they spend time on, what titles draw their attention, what subjects make them click.
And for that, we have the much loved and detested stats.
I love them. Others detest them. I suppose I’m just not old enough on the site to hate them. I’m sure in time I’ll get there. No matter how we each feel about them, they are useful.
I decided to do a monthly top 3 of my best Medium stories for the previous month. And by best I mean the ones that earn the most. We still live in a world where we pay money for our bills.
When we pay something else I’ll do a top Most Creative or a Top Silliest. Until then, best means dollars.
I thought it would be a good learning experience for both myself and you. We find out what people like and we give them that. If we feel like it.
Simple, right?
Let’s do this.
First place:
Earnings: 3.30 $
Views: 921, of which only 19% internal.
Second place:
Earnings: 2.41 $
Views: 189, of which 69% internal.
Third place:
Earnings: 3.01 $
Views: 55, of which 91% internal.
Lessons:
April was my first month on Medium. By the time I figured out what was going on, half the month had passed and a lot of my stories weren’t even under the Medium Payment Program. That one’s on me. Still, I managed to make 11.92 $. It wasn’t too bad.
You can read all about it here:
What are the lessons we can all learn from the 3 top stories?
- We only get paid for internal views. If your story goes viral among non-Mediumites it doesn’t count for your earnings. It still feels great though.
- People are interested in the following. Success stories. Failure stories. Personal stories. Raw truths. Not giving up. Men are interested in getting women. Doh for that last one.
3. It’s important to get your first 100 followers and monetize your stories as soon as possible.
Valuable lessons. Now I have something to work on.
Because I only started this series one month later, I’ll follow up soon with the stories and lessons for May.
